RUDY Plummer bagged his second goal in as many Winchester City friendlies last night in a 1-1 draw with Basingstoke Town.

After a goalless first half, Basingstoke’s George Hallahan broke the deadlock with a 25-yard free-kick.

But well-travelled frontman Rudy Plummer, who numbers Winchester as one of his many former clubs, rescued the Citizens a draw.

Three days earlier, City had kicked off their pre-season programme with a 3-1 win over Alresford Town.

Winchester, who featured several new faces including returning centre-back Ross Bottomley, went ahead through Jamie Barron.

Alresford’s prolific former Otterbourne marksman Tom Sands levelled before the zippy Plummer - who finished last season at Whitchurch United - headed home Micky Hubbard’s corner. Adam Tomasso made it 3-1.

Both ex-Eastleigh and AFC Totton defender Bottomley and Plummer contacted City for the chance to sign Southern League forms ahead of the new Division One South & West season.

"Ross has been a good footballer in his time and, if can get back to anywhere near that standard, he will be a big plus for us," said City's director of football Dave Malone.

"As for Rudy, he's a bit unpredictable but, if he's at it, he's a real handful. He caused Basingstoke no end of problems when he came on. He's played two halves for us and scored in both matches."

Winchester host another friendly on Saturday (July 16, 3pm) against John Pyatt’s Lymington Town.

A number of trialists - including three ex-Eastleigh youngsters - will again feature as City look to a bolster a squad that reached the S&W play-off semi-finals last term.

Goalkeeper Lewis Noice (Eastleigh), striker Sam Wilson (Salisbury) and midfielder Stuart Green (Bognor) are all confirmed signings, while Warren Bentley, Leigh Mills, Brendan Norris and brothers Jake and Howard Newton have all moved on.
