WINCHESTER City have landed a home tie against Vanarama National League South opposition in the FA Cup second qualifying round.

Ian Saunders’ men will throw open the Denplan City Ground doors to Truro City on Saturday week (September 17, 3pm).

Although Truro are two leagues higher than the Citizens, they are not having the best of seasons.

Currently the White Tigers are fourth to bottom of the VNL South table with six points from eight games.

They are licking their wounds after a 6-0 home thrashing by East Thurrock United on Saturday with manager Lee Hodges admitting they “lack leaders.”

Salisbury's reward for knocking out Frome Town is a tough home tie against Gloucester City, who are ninth in the VNL North.

Describing himself as “disappointed” with the draw, Whites boss Steve Claridge said: “I was looking for the complete opposite – a game against a lower-ranked team as I want us to stay in the Cup as long as possible.

“We’ve beaten a side (Frome) from the Southern Premier, but stepping up again to the Conference North will be a different proposition altogether.

“We may be getting lucky with home draws, but not with the calibre of the opposition.”

AFC Portchester, the only Sydenhams Premier side definitely through, will host Southern Premier Division outfit Merthyr Town.

The winners of tomorrow's (Tuesday's) replay between Fareham Town and Alresford, who drew 1-1 on Saturday, have the carrot of a home tie against Cadbury Heath of the Western Premier Division.

FA Cup second qualifying round (Saturday, September 17), local ties: AFC Portchester v Merthyr Town, Alresford Town or Fareham Town v Cadbury Heath, Basingstoke Town v Hungerford Town, Chippenham Town v Poole Town, Havant & Waterlooville v Highworth Town, Salisbury v Gloucester City, Swindon Supermarine v Farnborough, Taunton Town v Fleet Town or Slimbridge, Weymouth or Paulton Rovers v Gosport Borough, Winchester City v Truro City.
