ROCK-BOTTOM Gosport Borough banked a rare Evo-Stik Premier Division point on Saturday – but it could so easily have been three.

Having done the hard work of taking a 77th-minute lead at home to Biggleswade Town, Borough surrendered it just three minutes later to be held 1-1 at Privett Park.

With no goalkeeper available, Biggleswade had to play their captain Daniel Craig between the sticks but he was seldom tested in a goalless first half.

But Borough upped their game after the break and a couple of chances went begging for ex-Eastleigh marksman Ben Wright.

Finally the breakthrough came when Rowan Vine got Privett Park rocking with a stunning strike from just outside the area.

But Connor Hall burst Borough’s bubble with a rapid leveller which denied Borough their first win in 19 games.

But with second-to-bottom Dunstable Town beaten 3-0 at home by Slough on Good Friday, all is not lost for Gosport.

They are now just three points behind their fellow strugglers with a game in hand and a superior goal difference of five.

Gosport will do well to get anything out of tomorrow's trip to high-flying Weymouth (3pm), but they have a home game to come against St Ives on Saturday followed by a ‘six-pointer’ at Dunstable on April 10, so there is still all to play for with just one to go down.

“We probably didn’t look like a team at the bottom of the league on Saturday and that’s refreshing heading into the rest of the season,” said player/joint boss Vine.

“If we can get the atmosphere going again against St Ives, we’ll go into the Dunstable game in much better shape.”
