Winchester City’s new player-assistant manager James Taylor earned his side a well-deserved point at Hungerford Town last night.
City came back from behind to draw 1-1 against last season’s Evo- Stik South & West play-off semi- finalists, making it a pleasing four points out of six from their first two games since clinching promotion from the Sydenhams League.
Hungerford took the lead when Winchester keeper Rory Anderson failed to deal with a cross from the left, inviting Republic of Ireland international Alan O’Brien to pounce.
But Taylor, on as a second-half substitute, used all his experience to haul City back on level terms, hitting home on the half-volley after 67 minutes.
Delighted club owner Paul McCarthy said: “Our heads went down a bit after Hungerford scored, but we came back and dominated the second half. We had four or five good chances to their two and their manager came up to me afterwards and said your side should have won.
“Hungerford are third favourites to win the league but, over the course of the game, we were slightly in front. JT made a difference in the second half. He’s an older fella with so much strength and experience.”
