SHOLING are ready to unleash two of the area’s most feared strikers against Horndean at Five Heads Park tonight (Thursday, 7.45).

Not only have the Boatmen signed Zach Glasspool from Winchester City, but Lee Wort has returned to his spiritual Silverlake Arena home after parting company with cash-strapped National League South outfit Gosport Borough.

St Mary’s lad Wort last kicked a ball for Sholing at Wembley Stadium as the 50-plus goal spearhead of their FA Vase/Sydenhams League double-winning side of 2013/14.

“Worty was going to see the season out with Gosport, but he was a free agent and I said why not come back and start scoring again,” said Sholing boss Dave Diaper.

“He joined us for the pre-match warm-up last Saturday and we’re really pleased to have him back. He’s Sholing through and through.”

With Justin Bennett and Matt Paterson (now Havant & Waterlooville) scoring goals galore for Gosport last season, Wort struggled to get into the team. This season he made 24 Borough appearances – several of them off the bench – and scored four goals.

“He had to bide his time at Gosport and I think he’d have liked more opportunity in his second season, but I just want to see him back playing football,” said Diaper. “You can’t make headlines if you’re not playing.

“We’ve got 13 games left and Worty’s capable of scoring 18 goals in that time, that’s just the way he is.

“Sometimes it’s not as easy as that, but at least he’ll get the opportunity.”

It was Sholing’s assistant boss Stu Hussey who tipped off Diaper about ex-Alresford targetman Glasspool wanting to leave Southern One South & West promotion chasers Winchester City.

“We put in an approach straight away and tried to be as courteous as we could,” said Diaper. “It would have been foolish to pass up the opportunity of signing him. It’s all part of the manager’s job.”
