Winchester underlined their Hampshire/Surrey Regional Division 1 promotion pedigree by twice coming from behind to beat Bournemouth 4-2 at Chapel gate.

Bournemouth, under the cosh in the early exchanges, counter attacked and forced a penalty corner which Mikey Warlow deflected past a helpless Rory McCullum to give the second placed hosts a tenth minute lead.

With five minutes of the first period remaining Winchester scored a well worked equaliser when Adam Tollefsen won a crunching tackle in defence and released Kent Langridge to move quickly through to Rob Craddock who, in turn, laid off to Craig Jeffrey to reverse-stick score.

Bournemouth retook the lead five minutes into the second half when Warlow reverse-hit his seventh goal of the season from the top of the D.

Winchester finally received some reward when Rob Richie laid a long ball through to the Regional League’s top scorer Langridge, who converted his ninth of the season.

Table topping Winchester then took the lead for the first time in the game when Mark Maunsell roofed his penalty stroke after a defender’s foot stopped the ball rolling over the line.

Chris Jackson then put the result beyond doubt when he spied a large gap during a penalty corner routine and crashed his shot into the backboard.

Bournemouth had late penalty appeals turned down, but they would have had no time for a further response and the points were safely with Winchester.

While Winchester march on, Southampton are struggling – the 4-0 defeat at Basingstoke being their fourth in a row.

Sam Dean, Jed Mills, Ben Shaugnessey and David Stones scored for Basingstoke.
