Southampton parkrun is celebrating its record turn-out.

The fast-growing weekly event on Southampton Common, which began in July 2012, saw a total of 720 runners brave the wet and windy conditions to complete the 5km course, surpassing the 697 that ran the event’s 100th Park Run last May.

Of the 281 parkrun events across the country, only Bushy Park, in Teddington, south London (1705) and Hull (779) have attracted more.

But, as Southampton parkrun stalwart Gareth Jones says: “Hull’s next highest attendance is a measly 501, which we regularly exceed, so I'm inclined to regard Southampton as the second largest parkrun in the UK.”

There are also parkrun events held every Saturday morning at Eastleigh’s Fleming Park (290), Netley Abbey (233), Winchester (280) Brockenhurst (113), Bournemouth (324) and Southsea (277).
