Fareham table tennis ace Jonny McMullan was a star turn against the best young players in England when he competed at the Cadet Masters.
The 13-year-old Henry Cort School student was the lowest-ranked player at the event, which brings together the top 12 players in the Table Tennis England Cadet rankings to play against each other on a round-robin basis over the best of five sets.
But he finished fifth, taking some notable scalps along the way.
McMullan started brilliantly, beating both the No 3 seed James Smith and the No 2 seed Harry Dai in five sets.
He had to come from 2-1 down against Smith, winning 11-8, 8-11, 10-12, 11-8, 13-11, before an even more impressive fightback against Dai, who he beat 10-12, 8-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-8.
He went on to win five more matches to end in fifth place.
Also competing at the event was Southampton’s Artur Veeck Caltabiano.
The 14-year-old Mountbatten School student was ranked 10th going in and won two matches to finish ninth.
He also took No 1 seed and eventual gold medallist Alex Ramsden to a fifth-set decider before losing it 4-11, 6-11, 11-9, 12-10, 7-11.
