Hampshire’s Olympic cycling champion Dani King plans to return to the track for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

King, who won women's team pursuit gold at London 2012, stepped away from the British Cycling track programme after being kept in reserve for the 2014 Track World Championships in Cali, Colombia.

The 24-year-old from Southampton focused on the road, but now she plans to return to the velodrome to reclaim a place in the line-up for the four-rider, four-kilometre team pursuit.

"My plan is to get back into the track squad for Rio," King, who was speaking as Aviva was announced as the title sponsor of the Tour of Britain and Women's Tour in London on Thursday, told Press Association Sport.

"I'm having a season on the road with Wiggle-Honda and I'll be hoping to get myself back into the team September-time, with the goal of being in the team for the 2016 World Championships in London (next March) and Rio."

King is a three-time world champion in the team pursuit and won Olympic gold with Laura Trott and Joanna Rowsell over 3km.

She opted to switch to the road to add endurance for the additional kilometre in the team pursuit, which was inserted at the end of 2013 to bring the event in line with the men's discipline.

"The shape I'm in now is probably better than I've been in for quite a long time," King added.

"I'm hoping that strength will transfer to the track. I'm really pleased with the decision I've made.

"It's all about making that team now. It's about focusing on my day-to-day training and getting the most out of myself."

King knows breaking into the squad will be difficult. Rowsell, Trott, Katie Archibald and Elinor Barker won the 2014 world title, before finishing second in Paris earlier this year, when Ciara Horne was reserve.

She is focused on the track, but there is the possibility she could return to the road in support of Lizzie Armitstead if she misses out.

"I'll know far enough in advance whether I'll have a chance of making the team or not and, if not, then maybe I would focus on being part of the road race team," she added.
