A HAMPSHIRE footballer blasted a remarkable double hat-trick against higher division opposition in a cup tie in the space of 45 minutes – and still finished on the losing side!

Steve Brown scored all Four Marks’ goals as they came from 0-4 down to draw 6-6 at the end of normal time at Southampton-based Bush Hill in the second round of the Hampshire Premier League Cup.

But Brown’s incredible feat – which hoisted his seasonal tally to 22 in league and cup action – counted for nothing in the end as Bush ran out 9-6 winners after extra time.

Tom Mason was the home side’s goal hero, netting four times to catapult himself into top spot in the HPL top flight scorers’ chart with 15.

Jack Jewell started the goalrush in the sixth minute and Mason grabbed his first after 15 minutes.

Mason and Lewis Gundry extended Bush’s lead to 4-0 at half-time, before Brown began his sensational one-man rescue act four minutes after the restart from the penalty spot.

Brown netted his second on 54 minutes before Terry Parker restored the hosts’ three-goal lead.

Not for long, though, as Tom Reffell set up Brown to complete his hat-trick and make it 5-3.

Mason completed his triple but Four Marks refused to lay down and die and Brown headed his fourth on 73 minutes.

With nine minutes left, Brown struck for the fifth time – narrowing Bush’s lead to 6-5.

And with just minutes left, Brown was unmarked to convert Jacob Warwick’s far post cross.

A huge struck of luck saw Bush retake the lead in the second period of extra time – Ronnie Spiteri’s 20-yard shot crashing against the crossbar, bouncing down and crossing the life after it hit Four Marks keeper Joe Brock on the heel.

Mason added his fourth goal on 111 minutes and Martyn Randell completed the scoring from the penalty spot.
