JON Dibben presented his mum with the perfect Mother’s Day gift after becoming world champion – his victory bouquet.

Anne Dibben told the Daily Echo of her pride after the 22 year-old’s stunning success in the Olympic Park velodrome on Friday night.

The school teacher from Totton watched Jon become world champion in the points race alongside husband Jerry, eldest son Peter and other family members before enjoying an early Mother’s Day lunch the next day.

She said: “Jon gave me his winning flowers and the boys booked us lunch at a restaurant overlooking the Thames which made Mother’s Day weekend extra special.

“Midway through I had a lot of texts from people saying they hoped I was having a nice lunch.

“I didn’t think many people even knew but Clare Balding had mentioned it on the BBC when explaining why Jon couldn’t be on the television panel that afternoon!”

Anne and Jerry, who have lived in Totton for 30 years, were thrilled to see the youngest of their two sons go one better than the silver medal he won in the team pursuit alongside Sir Bradley Wiggins, Owain Doull and Ed Clancy 24 hours earlier.

“We didn’t really know what to expect, Jon didn’t even know he would be competing in the points race until quite late notice,” said Anne.

“But I thought he would win because every time he says he doesn’t know what to expect he does well.”

Jerry, a marine pilot at ABP, was “absolutely thrilled” with the outcome.

“The lads had been quite down after the team pursuit, it was all about that event and before the race Jon said it would either go very well or very badly,” he said.

“Thankfully it was the former and we’re so happy for him after putting in so much hard work.

“He was suffering a bit at one stage as all his training had been geared to the team pursuit.

“But somehow he did it in what was an unbelievable atmosphere.”
