Rob Arkell secured a first podium place and a spot in the Ironman 70.3 World Championships with a storming performance in Budapest.

The local triathlete, who works full time for Koozai in Park Gate, came second in the 30-34 age group at Ironman 70.3 Budapest, and was 16th overall, including the professionals.

Arkell completed the 1.2 mile swim in 30.52, the 56 mile bike in 2.11 and the half marathon in just 1.18 to record a total time of 4.04.

The result got him a coveted podium place as well as spot in next year’s 70.3 World Championships in Chattanooga, America.

Having already qualified for and competed in last year’s full Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, his focus is now on Ironman Weymouth in September.

He said: “I have no words. I literally can’t believe it. Just a huge thank you to everyone who has ever helped me, said anything nice to me or supported me.

“I gave it absolutely everything I had and raced on feel as the bike computer died and just went hard which goes to show technology can limit you.

“I set a goal to get on the podium this year so I’m happy with the performance, especially in 32 degree heat.

“Things are looking good for Ironman Weymouth in six weeks’ time.”
