POOL skills learnt in a Shropshire pub more than 40 years ago helped Hedge End Club B pull off an unlikely and ultimately bizarre derby-day victory.
Bottom of the league with one win from 11, Kelvin Kellaway’s side emerged triumphant from the cauldron of noise that accompanied their long-awaited return match against their A side.
Roy Jones, who clinched the decisive third win, was taught the game aged 15 in the Bucks Head pub in Telford by his step-dad John Aloford who died last August.
“Even 40 years later, I still remember what he taught me,” said the 56-year-old. “He was a brilliant pool player.
“Sadly, we lost him last year. God bless him.”
