Tottonians are leading the chase for London 2 South-West’s leaders following Saturday’s victory over Old Reigatian RFC at Water Lane.

Totts’ Surrey opponents had hoped to be the club putting pressure on Gosport & Fareham and Guildford but were outdone by the home side’s quality and determination.

The sides exchanged a penalty each in the opening stages before Totts turned over an Old Reigatian scrum. Dan Stocks picked up, set up a ruck and scrum half Bryne Marshall fed Robbie Searle, who went over in the corner.

Searle followed that with a penalty just before the break for an 11-3 lead.

The visitors hit back with a quality try and conversion out wide to get to within a point and it stayed that way after a penalty for both sides.

Stocks spent ten minutes on the sidelines with a yellow card but Totts still managed to gain some ground with another Searle penalty.

Totts then showed their versatility with two tries. First the forwards pushed back Reigate’s scrum and Number 8 Ali Ramus controlled the ball before Marshall picked up and drove over.

Then Marshall fed Richard Buck, who made good ground before off-loading to wing Gareth Allen to crash through a last-ditch tackle in the corner. Searle converted both scores.

Coach Gavin Williams said: “Ultimately I’m satisfied that we got four points but frustrated that we didn’t really click.

“I think if we had of done the bonus point would have been there.

“I was really pleased with the set piece and pleased to see Michael Searle, Dan Stocks and Dan Taylor back in the fold, so we are beginning to get some of our more experienced players back and the younger lads are doing well. Gareth Allen, playing on the wing, took his try really well and I was pleased for him.”

Winchester’s habit of dominating the latter parts of their matches paid off when they chalked up their first away success – defeating Teddington 24-20.

Winch kicked off with some hard and fast rugby but found themselves 17-3 in arrears at the break – Connor Breen providing the visitors’ points with a penalty.

Half-time tips on ball retention and patience from frustrated coach Andy Fields seemed to have an impact.

Replacement outside centre Wayne Almendarez soon picked a good angle to touch down near the posts. Breen converted that and then added two points to a try from Tom Pervin to level the game.

Teddington went in front briefly before Winchester claimed the points with a try from Australian inside centre Nick Fielding.

Trojans recorded their second draw of the season – a 12-12 stalemate at Weybridge Vandals.

Gosport & Fareham made easy work of their home task against second-from-bottom Effingham & Leatherhead to move back to the top of the table.

Gos sit above Guildford after their 61-17 victory.
