Tottonians are on track to finish the season on a high after moving up to fifth spot in London 1 South.

The club stepped up a place with another emphatic victory in their first season in London 1 South, beating bottom side Twickenham 48-3.

Totts looked in control throughout and kept the scoreboard ticking over with some wonderful tries in the stop-start match, which came under threat of being called off at one point when the referee injured his ankle. After treatment he carried on and Totts ended the day by leapfrogging Brighton who lost out at Maidstone.

The battling Londoners came out of the blocks for the opening couple of minutes of the game and finished in the same fashion, but never got a toe over Totts’ line.

Full back Pierre Clark got Tottonians’ first try after five minutes when he brushed off a couple of tackles to touch down in the corner. Josh Andrew’s break down the wing was then brought to an end by a last-ditch Twickenham tackle but his work was rewarded when Alistair Ramus got the ball to ground following a line-out and maul.

Winger Bart van Herwijnen forced his way over to give the home side a 19-3 half-time lead and the bonus point try was scored shortly after the break by fly half Robbie Searle.

But the best score of the day came when Totts were under pressure in their own 22. They stole possession and broke through Bart van Herwijnen and scrum half Harry Dolbear before Richard Buck finished off the move.

Captain Robbie Searle claimed his second when he got on the end of a neat chip from Dolbear, Andrews neatly side-stepped defenders to go over the line and Mike Searle switched direction to foil would-be tacklers to place down.

Coach Gavin Williams said: “I said to the lads that it is a mark of how well they have played all season that with a 48-3 win we were still frustrated at times. I think that’s because we know how fluent we can be and today the game was a little stop-start. It was hampered by the injury to the referee and he did well to carry on.

“We decided to keep the game tight until we got to 60 minutes so he did not have to run around a lot – if you get to 60 minutes the game stands.”

He added: “I think if our concentration levels were a little bit higher we could have put more points on the board. But if you had said to me at the start of the season that we would be putting 40 or 50 points on teams in this league on a regular basis we would have been chuffed.”

Gosport were beaten 64-11 at home by fourth-placed Medway who, ironically, could be relegated instead of Gos. The Kent side has fallen foul of RFU rules on playing professional players and have been told they will drop out of London 1 level at the end of the season and start next term with minus 25 points. The club has appealed.

Havant, who travel to Tottonians on April 9, lost 21-14 at third-placed Sidcup.
