SHELLEY Jory has only just completed her first season in P1 racing, the Southampton woman is already trying to get ready for the next.

Jory spent the weekend competeting in the final Powerboat P1 grand prix in Sircausa, Sicily.

Her all-woman boat Iko Casa was fifth going into the weekend with an outside chance of finishing third.

However, they had to settle for fifth with Jory and crew mate Audrien Ciantar left rueing a breakdown at the previous meeting in Sweden, which ultimately cost them a top three finish.

Jory said: “We’ve done really well for our first season in P1. To get through an entire season without any injuries or major boat problems is quite something.

“We were undone by the previous stage in Sweden, with the high cost of engine parts to fix the boat ultimately ended our chances of finishing third, but hey ho, that’s racing.

“This weekend we had to play to team orders, as our sister boat (Seagull Chaudron) was competing to win the championship – and we’re really glad they did.

“We are just really grateful for our time in P1. We raced hard and fast, beating the best of the boys.”

Jory will be competing in Lymington next Saturday for Team Scorpion. Then she will be hunting for sponsors to try and help her and Ciantar to compete again in P1.

“We need to be able to find someone with an interest in powerboat racing who really likes the idea of a couple of girls beating all the boys,” she said.

“We just have to work extremely hard and try and find sponsors. Basically that is what we’ll be doing throughout the winter – although I have to somehow try and fit in getting married in November.”
