DISABLED yachtsman Geoff Holt has scooped one of the most prestigious awards in sailing.

The 43-year-old from Shedfield was presented with the RYA’s Francis Elkin Award by the Princess Royal in recognition of his contribution to disabled sailing.

After being left paralysed when he was 18, Geoff went on to help set up the Sailability charity and has broken numerous disabled sailing records.

In 2007 Geoff became the first disabled person to sail solo around the UK and in December will set sail on a 3,000-mile adventure across the Atlantic.

RYA chief executive Rod Carr said: “The RYA is delighted to make this award in recognition of Geoff’s enthusiasm and promotion of our sport and many years’ contribution to the sailing scene in the south.”
