HAMPSHIRE sailor Pete Cumming has blasted to glory in the first ever Extreme Sailing Series Asia event.

Cumming the current European champion, added more silverware to his collection by beating five other teams to first place in the first event of the series, held in Hong Kong.

He skippered his Extreme 40 catamaran Oman Sail Masirah, capable of speeds of more than 40mph, to a comfortable win beating top sailors including Shirley Robertson and Nick Moloney along the way.

Cumming, from Warsash, said: “We had very different winds here to the European circuit and with two new members of the team we are really pleased to have done so well.

“We had to learn to adapt to a new bow and helmsmen and it’s been a great challenge that the whole team has risen to.

“We came here not looking for or expecting a win. We just gave it our best.”

Cumming was joined onboard Oman Sail Masirah by fellow Hampshire yachtsman Mark Bulkeley, former Olympian Leigh MacMillan from the Isle of Wight and Omani newcomer Khamis Al Anbouri.

The Extreme Sailing Series Asia, run by Dame Ellen MacArthur’s company OC Events, consists of three stopovers. The next event will take place in Singapore from December 11 to 15.
