HAMPSHIRE’S Ian Williams looks set to lose his place at the top of the 2013 Alpair World Match Racing Tour leaderboard.

Racing in the Gold Cup in Bermuda, Williams was left bemoaning his team’s quarter-final performance.

Having come out on top in qualifying and picking Taylor Canfield as his opponent, he then lost 3-1 to the US Virgin Islander.

Canfield could now take over from Williams, who finished sixth in Bermuda, at the top.

“It all really hinges on how Taylor does here,” Williams said.

“If he wins here he’ll have a really big lead going into Malaysia, but if he comes fourth he’ll have a small lead with Bjorn [Hansen], Adam [Minoprio] and us reasonably close overall.”

Lymington’s Sir Ben Ainslie won the first race of a first-to-three semi-final against Minoprio before racing was stopped due to light winds.

Francesco Bruni was leading Canfield by the same score.
