Adkins boosted by fans' support
8:40am Saturday 27th October 2012 in Saints News
By Adam Leitch, Chief Sports Writer
Nigel Adkins says the backing he got from fans in this week’s massive Daily Echo poll was “refreshing and rewarding”.
More than 5,000 Saints supporters flooded on to dailyecho.co.uk to have their say on Adkins’ future with a huge 78 per cent backing him to carry on as Saints manager.
Adkins has come under pressure after a tough start to life back in the Premier League but has picked himself, and his team, up again after the 4-1 defeat at West Ham left people questioning his position.
When asked whether he felt under any pressure regarding his future at the club, Adkins said: “No, not at all.
“There is a stability at this club which is vitally important.
“Everyone here understands there needs to be stability.
“I don’t think there is any need for me to (seek assurances from the board).
“I said at the start of the season that there would be stormy weather ahead. We just need to baton down the hatches, stick together, ride out the wave.
“When we have got through this period we will be able to experience the good times together.
“It’s very pleasing that 78 per cent have turned around and said that they want me to carry on. It’s very refreshing and rewarding.”
Adkins was positivity personified as he addressed the media ahead of the return of Gareth Bale and his Tottenham team to St Mary’s tomorrow.
His persona was in contrast to the downbeat figure he cut following last week’s 4-1 thrashing at the hands of West Ham.
Adkins insists his players have reacted well to the poor showing, and conceded that the team must defend better when they take on Spurs this weekend.
“This hasn’t been a difficult week at all,” he said.
“I let a bit of negativity creep in for the first time last week, but I had to quickly dispel that.
“Training has been good. The lads have responded in the appropriate manner.
“At this moment a couple of defeats have come about by some goals we could have stopped. We need to address that.”
Adkins surprisingly left Rickie Lambert on the bench for last weekend’s defeat, prompting fears the striker could leave St Mary’s.
Stoke have been linked with the 30-year-old, but Adkins says he will not listen to any offers for the player.
“I am not aware of an enquiry and we wouldn’t consider (selling him),” Adkins added.
“He is one of the main reasons why we have got back to the Barclays Premier League.
“We love the bones of him. He works very hard. It is my responsibility to pick the team, whether Ricky is in that team or coming off the bench to make an impact as he did against Manchester City.”
Should Lambert continue to be benched, Adkins admits offers could come in for the player, however.
He said: “Rickie Lambert is a good football player.
“I’m sure anyone who sees him not in the starting XI might wonder: ‘what’s happening there? We might show a bit of interest’. That’s football.”
Adkins should have Tadanari Lee available for selection again after his elbow injury while Luke Shaw is also on the fringes of getting a first Premier League start.
Gaston Ramirez, Frazer Richardson and Jack Cork remain out.

I am fully behind the squad and it reaches into your soul a great bit of poetry.
When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day
Just go to the mirror and look at yourself
And see what that man has to say.
For it isn't your father, or mother, or wife
Whose judgment upon you must pass
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the one staring back from the glass.
He’s the fellow to please – never mind all the rest
For he’s with you, clear to the end
And you’ve passed your most difficult, dangerous test
If the man in the glass is your friend.
You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years
And get pats on the back as you pass
But your final reward will be heartache and tears
If you've cheated the man in the glass.
well said and just. now go out there and smash the spuds

read what you want from that, but it could mean that NC has told NA he is in no present danger.

nige when you take out wums and fish from that vote it will be more than 78%, but its nice to know that us fans can lift you, as you have done so much to lift us over the last couple of years.

I have feared for his job with all of the negative media.
Yes, he's made mistakes, he's human.
I just can't wait to go to see him and the Saints tommorrow.
I shall be sceaming out for Nigel and the team the whole game.
Don't care what the state of play at the end.
What I do know is we have the best manager ever, to run the Saints team.
Long may that last!

Always liked NA right from the start. It was so great to get an articulate and positive manager at Southampton after all those lean years. Long may it continue. Stick with it Nigel and the results will come. Adkins is the new Ted Bates. Ted had some leaks at the back but he had big McGrath bullying the opposition center forward. In the January window look for a center half with the scars on the forehead and the bent nose! The clean sheets will come. IN NIGEL WE TRUST.

Ricky Lambert - positional play.
I would not allow him onto the wings at all. Lallana and Puncheon often in a position to put in good crosses but he is no where to be seen as he's still on the wings.
In Alan Shearers twilight years he just stayed in the middle of the park. A proper target man who also scored some great goals from outside the box.
I voted yes for Nigel. Sometimes though you have to listen to the fans. How many times did the fans say over the summer we need decent centre backs and a left back. I hope Luke Shaw plugs the gap and makes it his own as Fox and Yoshida there are truly shocking

Well I'm a Skate and I voted FOR Adkins to remain as manager. As did many others of us. Because we are enjoying the sight of him struggling desperately out of his depth in the Premier League and leading you to inevitable relegation.
The last thing we want to see is Adkins replaced by a manager like Rafa benitez who will be able to use his Premier experience to keep you up this season.
Stick to your own team and stop trying to wind us up.
P.s You will be enjoying lower league football for a long time (that's if you survive) and that is where you belong! Below the Saints

Everyone is entitled to an opion but every accusation by A J W PEARSE can be answered with a counter reason.
The club that Markus bought under the guidence of Nicola was only days before it went to the wall. People must be able to see the club had to be grasp by the neck and given a dam good shake by a man strong enough to do this. Like it or not that man was and is NICOLA CORTESE.
It is said that he bought his own ticket for this season, if true why should anyone else expect free admission ??. You get a FREE TICKET to park whilst you go to buy tickets or items from the shop at the stadium. A charge was introduced to stop people parking at the stadium and walking into the city to work or shop. Very few people know why A PARDEW was dismissed but a lot of talk did suggest it was not for footballing reasons.
The stewards on the turnstiles have disapeared because of the new system used for entry into the stadium on match days. This was introduced to stop the club loosing money by fraudulent means. The stewards may or may not have been employed in other parts of the stadium. With the bigger crowds expected this seson the club would need more stewards to control the fans.
I myself feel that the club has now moved on from the old days where all clubs were football clubs. In todays world they no longer exist as football clubs and have been replaced by football businesses. That does not mean that it is no longer fun or entertaining. Your club is what you make it. I have had a great deal of enjoyment from the last three seasons followi S F C. Nobody thought it was going to be a walk in the park this season but, by christ i am enjoying it so far. When not if we turn the corner in this league it will be even better.
For me carry on Nicola . It would be great if the Club and the Echo could build bridges instead of burning them it could then be even better.
HEDGE END BOB.

Ramirez wrote home recently stating that he's having a great time although suffered a slight injury recently but is putting his free time to good use travelling around the country getting acclimatized and doing some sightseeing, maybe the odd shopping spree...he said he will be out of the team for a few months yet...he's trying to get his best mate over here on a simular contract and maybe a mercedes thrown in as well.
Blimey the saint's players have got it easy.

“I don’t think there is any need for me to (seek assurances from the board).
read what you want from that, but it could mean that NC has told NA he is in no present danger.
“It’s very pleasing that 78 per cent have turned around and said that they want me to carry on. It’s very refreshing and rewarding.”
nige when you take out wums and fish from that vote it will be more than 78%, but its nice to know that us fans can lift you, as you have done so much to lift us over the last couple of years.

You still waffle on about winning this and winning that and bemoan the fact that your previous owners financially ran the club badly. You still fail to connect the two. You bought your success.
A few weeks back The News ran a story about Pompey having had recent success but now being in financial trouble and having to sell players and cut costs or face ruin. The story was a reprint from about 1950 - you have learned nothing, nothing at all.

The lesser achieving football cities of England. (by pop)
Bristol 420k - 1 welsh cup, 1 Anglo-scottish cup
Leicester 330k - 3 League cups
Coventry 303k 1 FA cup
Stoke 259K - nothing
Plymouth 243k - nothing
Southampton 234k 1 FA cup
The stains are not in the top 3 - but they are in a "Champions" League position

Why do the ECHO pretend they want a relationship with SAINTS ,then go and print on page 53 of todays edition a damming letter about the Chairman ???.

Also feel it is total s*te biased, vendetta minded reporting by the Echo.
Try at some point to do some objective fair reporting when it comes to Cortese and the running of our club please.

COYR.the only team on the south coast in the prem you may be but it is only for another 30 games, and how many more goals to concede in that time, spurs 4-0 sc*m tomorrow defoe hatrick and bale one and you lot to go home on the 67th min,and then when you get relegated the firesale will start and then cortese will sell the club and then you will be left in debt and start spiralling downwards, oh how the next 7 months will be funny..PUP

Why do the ECHO pretend they want a relationship with SAINTS ,then go and print on page 53 of todays edition a damming letter about the Chairman ???.

"PrawnChris, shame you and your other 200 hardcore fans weren't chanting his name earlier in the season, or he may have stayed with your two bob club in the first place. For Wes it will be like leaving Oxford University, and returning to Grangehill. How demorilising for him.
The man has got great integrity and belief.

They have nothing to brag about
And come on here to have a shout
From jealousy, they try to poke
Because that team is just a joke
I love to log on to this site
And laugh when each of them do write
Two leagues down and more to come
No wonder why they hate "the scum"
They envy this disparity,
And cheat and steal from charity
And screw the taxman, people's jobs,
You see that they are perfect knobs
And now they realize they're queer
They leave The News and come on here
So we can FEEL their words with glee
And laugh and say "THAT ISN'T ME"

Well I'm a Skate and I voted FOR Adkins to remain as manager. As did many others of us. Because we are enjoying the sight of him struggling desperately out of his depth in the Premier League and leading you to inevitable relegation.
The last thing we want to see is Adkins replaced by a manager like Rafa benitez who will be able to use his Premier experience to keep you up this season.

Pressure mounting on the manager and players building up before today's game and no doubt the fans will be feeling the tension too. But for Spurs it's an away game they justifiably can win. Offcourse i'm biased!
Looking forward to a good game, both being attack minded teams and saints poor in defence still should favour the visitor's.
Few more games and saints could be bottom again. It's nothing but bad news for your club at the minute....could be a lot worse come next season.
Bit chilly here last night but it will be -10 in Pomp£y soon. A few L1 wins and you are world beaters again. The reality is that L2 is calling and rightly so.

Give the captains armband to someone who is a leader!!! Not an inexperienced 24 year old guy that's never played in the prem before!!(he's under too much pressure to perform and his game has got worse since last season)
I'd love Adkins to get it right but how much time and how many chances do u give someone? I thought this club wanted to compete at the other end of the league... All the hard work to get us back here will stand for nothing if we get relegated again. What would have been the point???
Come on Adkins!!! Get it right today!!!

Nothing less than a win today is good enough,Spurs are a good team but we must make home advantage count. N/A must get the max out of the team and get his tactics right for once and then we will be out of the bottom three today.
I'm putting bets on us winning 3-0, 4-0, 5-0 and 6-0 so that if we do I'll at least have a cash win to water down the worry. It'll be just my luck that it's 7-0.
Still, on the bright side, we might get a week off from the moaners on here. They'll have to spend the week listening to Elvis's "Old Shep" and watching "Les Miserables" videos.

I hope he changes the formation back to 442 this week!! Our new system does not work with the players we've got. We've been a successful team for 2 seasons playing our way. Now this season it's all changed.

Kelv was for a while and Pards took it off him as keepers can't get about the pitch to hustle people on. Anyway he's dropped now. Rickie isn't a 90 minute player and doesn't need the added baggage. Yoshida is yet to establish himself and Jos and Jose aren't guaranteed to play. JWP isn't guaranteed. Cork is out injured. Guly isn't an ideal choice. Morgan isn't right nor is he guaranteed. Clyne is 21.
The only alternative to Adam is Steve Davis who is the obvious choice once he has made his mark and barring injury will be ever present. He hasn't done that yet. The decision for Adam to be captain is by default not by natural selection.
I'm no expert in formations but I do remember Nigel constantly switching between 442 and a diamond. It worked before let's try again.

To be honest, the wording of the questions in the poll was pretty much loaded in favour of a positive result for Adkins. I think he should go, I don't think he has the respect of the players and has been found out tactically this season time and again.
But how could anyone say that all of the clubs problems are down to him. The Echo should know better, shoddy journalism.
