Adkins: Ramirez was exhilarating
10:00am Monday 26th November 2012 in Saints News
By Gordon Simpson, Senior Sports Reporter
Gaston Ramirez
SAINTS boss Nigel Adkins hailed an “exhilarating” display from club-record signing Gaston Ramirez in the 2-0 win over Newcastle.
The £12m forward, who moved to St Mary’s from Serie A side Bologna in the summer, set up Adam Lallana’s opener before sealing the victory with his side’s second goal of the afternoon at St Mary’s.
Ramirez is yet to enjoy a prolonged run in the team, having only arrived at the club at the very end of August, with his transfer going through on deadline day, and missing over four weeks with a leg injury.
He returned earlier this month, though, and is beginning to display the full range of his abilities.
“Obviously you’ve got to get used to it all,” said Adkins of the transition the Uruguay international is having to make.
“Gaston missed the start of the season as it was before he signed and then he got injured.
“He hasn’t lasted the full game [Adkins substituted him in the 78th minute], but when he was on the field of play he was exhilarating.”
Adkins certainly appears to have struck upon a potent attacking blend, with Ramirez, Lallana and Jason Puncheon playing behind striker Rickie Lambert.
“You’ve got Adam Lallana, Gaston Ramirez, Jason Puncheon and Rickie Lambert there,” he said.
“They all contribute in a massive way and they’re exciting. They get supporters off their seat, there’s a flair about them, a fluidity of movement and there’s goals about them.
“Some of the attacking football was really, really good.”
Saints once again fielded a youthful team, and Adkins believes the energy his players possess is really helping performances.
“We’re a young side, but we’re a fit side,” he said.
“We talk about Morgan Schneiderlin and Jack Cork in the middle of the park, again they’ve got that solid base, but they can go and pass the ball and move the ball around, so all in all it’s a really pleasing victory."

We could have had four or five.
Fantastic save from Paulo in second half.
Clean sheet.
Out of the bottom three.
There isn't a team in this league that would want to play us right now.
Norwich are a good side, when we beat them the mesage that we are on a roll will reverberate around the league. The next few fixtures are all winnable.
The Saints fans can just sit and smile - we deserve this - this team is awesome. We always knew it and now it's starting to show.

Lol so much for them being passionate fans.
Gaston looks pure quality and we played some superb football. Bodes well for the future. Maybe a central defender and a midfield player to strenghen our squad would be cool.
But well done guys the bus seems to be rolling.

Well done Saints....brilliant football which was a joy to behold
Norwich are no mugs though but may have their first choice keeper out for our game Wednesday. Another 3 points would be very nice indeed and is looking quite possible if he side continue to play as well as they have in the last three games.
It could be worse, we could have only picked up 1 point out of a possible 21 in league 1...wah ha h ah ha

Now playing a formation that works for the players and subs that work (Rickie had taken a knock, Gaston was booked and tired and Luke feeling the pace)
Still need that top defender in the window and a young starlet of a winger. Makuya off to African Cup of Nations and noticed Guly back on the bench !!!!!
But all so positive. Roll on Wednesday 3-1 Rickis brace and Jay

I was at the brilliant match yesterday, but I must confess the best bit for me was the final whistle. I thought we could win, but was apprehensive before the kick off. After missing a few early chances I worried we wouldn't get more or it "just might not be our day". After our first goal I worried it was slender lead with a long way to go. After the second goal I worried they might get one back and then we might concede an equaliser in a very nervy injury time spell.
So, despite the fact that we were well on top almost throughout, the most enjoyable moment of all was the final whistle - rather like the "phew that was good" moment when a very scary roller coaster finally stops by the exit.
But thanks to Sky, watching the match again whilst knowing the result, will be an altogether more savoured experience.
And with steely resolve I won't start worrying about the Norwich match until at least tomorrow morning.
I know we can win this one, but er...they've had an extra day's rest....er....hope we're not over confident after yesterday....er....i

What will be funny will be the sight of a load of skunt lawyers trying to convince the judge of what an absolute shitehole Fratton Park is. "Your honour, the team is a shambles and the ground is worse. The 10 people that regularly turn up sit in squalor under a tin roof. The surrounding area is a cackhole that would be ruled unfit to keep cattle in, let alone people. Portpin's valuation of £8m for 3 acres of real estate in the centre of our city is absurd. Just look at it - it's terrible."

We've seen it too many times before - crosses going into the box with 3 mins + injury time to go left me with my heart in my mouth. If we'd been leading 3-0 it would have been so much more enjoyable simply for the security of the 3 points. Hitting the woodwork 3 times, the denied penalties, Jay's goal - fate and the officials spoiled the back end of the game for me simply because I couldn't relax and enjoy it.

I thouht Spider was poor yesterday. Ramirez had spells of positivity but no way is he worth £12 million, Cork wasn't bad but not as good as his previous two games, Lambert lazy again, Rodrigueuz a total waste of space, Davis - poor.
It will be interesting to see what happens in January - the first buy no dobt will be a new let back. Shaw has done well but ha not really been tested yet - do people think he's ready to defend against the likes of United, City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham?
Lets keep things in perspective!!!!

He was absolute class yesterday along with 10 others. I also thought both Jay and Davis looked excellent coming off of the bench. Great game and 2-0 didn't do us justice with the 2 turned down penalty claims, hittting the woodwork 3 times and the disallowed goal where he was a good yard onside

SFC were within hours of being wound up just over 3 years ago. We were hoping that a bloke in a council house was going to save us ffs! Then the fairy tale happened. The billionnaire and lovely man with his banker friend stepped in and saved the soul of a city.
The day at Wembley was so special. The skunts laugh because it's a micky mouse trophy, which it is, but that's because they don't understand the significance of that day after so many years of decline.
Then back to back promotions and great times leading to a return to the highest level of football in the world. We broke our transfer record twice, in fact we trebled it on Ramirez and he's beginning to look like a bargain.
If someone gave you a Roller for Christmas you'd moan that it had the wrong colour interior.
You sir are worse than a skunt.

I bet you're a right barrel of laughs to live with!
You are entitled to your opinion but so am I, and yours is wrong. I speak for myself but then so does everyone else and everyone else can't be wrong as well. You're on your own pal!
Yesterday's performance was outstanding. Yes Newcastle were second best but made them look that way. They looked dangerous several times with their pace and deep crosses coming in. The difference was we defended really well yesterday against a European side.
So, wind your neck in and start supporting. Ricky was knackered at the end. Cork sneiderling and puncheon were awesome yesterday. Ramirez had a great game but is still trying to settle in. He will be well worth that 12m come the end of the season.
Even j-rod looked lively when he came on and I am not a big fan of his yet.

It will be interesting to see what happens in January - the first buy no dobt will be a new let back. Shaw has done well but ha not really been tested yet - do people think he's ready to defend against the likes of United, City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham?
Lets keep things in perspective!!!!

Ramirez may get a reputation for diving - the first I don't think was a penalty, but the second was worth a shout.
We are a young team - and whilst we are all drooling over the display yesterday - it's a long season.
"Tango"man got it right again - but to be honest I think the team picks itself. It is easily the best defensively, solid in midfield and a single striker. Not playing Jay Rod and Lambert at the same time combined with having Jack Cork and a left back has shored up the left side.
Rodrigues will show his value later in the season when Rickie gets a knock or two!
Norwich will be tough, which Liverpool will turn up will decide how many points from the next 2-games!

Adam Lallana has been widely acclaimed as one of the most talented young midfielders in the land, which is entirely right. Less attention has been paid to his team-mate Jack Cork, who is equally important to Southampton. Since he returned from injury three matches ago the 23-year-old has been integral to his club's improvement (a more benign fixture list has also helped), bringing an intelligence and solidity to midfield that helps to protect the back four and give the likes of Lallana, Jason Puncheon, Rickie Lambert and the rapidly improving Gastón Ramírez a more sturdy platform on which to flourish. And that makes Southampton one of the most entertaining sides in the league.

You forget that Ramirez has just got back from a serious injury, be patient, there is a lot more to come from that department, Luke can only play against what he is dealt on the pitch, for a novice he ain't done bad and is learning more each game. Perspective is in the eye of the beholder, we are far from being the finished article and if the fixture list had been kinder early doors, we could have been so much better off than we are. Also don't expect an easy game against Norwich, on paper they are still a better team than us, we will have to work hard to better them.

Understandable caution given our start to the season. I am truly hoping that this team can show its mettle in the next four weeks. Then we can stop worrying about "the drop zone" and start looking at just how high in the table we can get.
You have to be positive.
And now.. a message for the less fortunate ....
It is always a little sad to see the waifs and strays from other clubs putting their bile on our threads. Many have stopped, presumably they are running out of things to say. Those that remain are really struggling and mainly just calling people names. Soon they will have no point of reference, no club to support, nothing but memories, fading whispers of bygone years and a life of unfulfilled dreams..headlines from papers on their demise and probably a documentary fronted by Fred Dinenage with the full story of how the club sank without trace.
Don't you just love Christmas !!!!

The style of football we are playing and our focus on young players is a credit to the league and Nigel's decision making has, overall, been hard to argue with - when the players were available or ready, he's picked the best starting XI and learned quickly.
I'd suggest that the England manager takes a break from watching Chelsea or Man City and runs the rule over the likes of Lallana and Puncheon for now and Shaw, Cork and Clyne for the future.
Brilliant effort by the boys, the fans and particularly Nigel, who has maintained that same level of calm and positivity after every single game, win or lose. Please, please, please NC, don't even consider the idea of changing anything on the management side, even if our form dips.
I'm concerned that my expectations are maybe a bit too high for Norwich, which is historically never a good thing for a Saints fan, but a win would be unbelievable for us and probably reflect where we should be, but for silly defensive mistakes.
We still need to strengthen the defence in January, but whatever the final outcome, we've got a lot to smile about.

If the ground is valued at, say, £3m, will that be an instant game over?
Their value of £2.75m does sound rather low to me as does £11m sound high.
The ideal outcome would be a value at the very, very top of their ability to buy it thereby leaving them over stretched and struggling. Yes, that would be nice. Although a high value leading straight to liquidisation has it merits too. It's a hard one to know which would bring maximum joy!

He will want to slip into town, ref the game, slip away. And the best way to ensure a quiet evening is not to be anti-the home side. So I expect him to be a refreshing contrast to the muppets we had officiating on Sunday.
He'll probably think 2-1's got a nice ring to it. I'd take that now, so long as it's a decent goal against Gazza. The more times I see that save from yesterday the more it reminds me of Banks in 1970 - he had no right to get over and down so quickly.
So I'd happily sacrifice a 2nd clean sheet for the 3 points. OK Mark?

That's why the likes of QPR, and Pompey for example, seem to be spending less initially, but pay for it further down the line.
It is also why Gaston Ramirez, with the promise of a hefty sell-on fee further down the line, is likely to be better value than, say, a Kanu, Lawrence or Ben Haim.
Does that make sense?

I also agree with your view on the Banks save.
Saw that one on telly, yesterdays was in the flesh and incredible.
The whole of the Chapel were on their feet with that one.
What confidence that will give the keeper and his defence.
Yesterday the referee was appaling so were his little helpers.
They were waving their flags in any direction the ref wanted it.
They were like demented railway signallers.
Lets hope the ref on Wednesday manages to leave his cards in the dressing room, the colours on them are fading because of the the amount of time he puts them into the daylight.

Norwich will prove a different game, they will not allow us time and space in important areas. Newcastle were without 3 important players and played mid week, they looked jaded. That said you can only play what's put in front of you and we could have scored more.
1 swallow doesn't make a summer. An entertaining game with great pass and flow football, but we are still short of quality players in certain areas. January will be important, I would like to see a keeper, left back, and centre half. We need to offload players too, what is happening with chappers?

Spotting the error on my way back to the car, I returned to the ticket office, got the correct ticket, an apology & they waived the £5.00 upgrade as this is a higher category game, without me even asking.
This is yet another shameful example of how our Club is being bled dry & squandering money!

The way I see it is that our performance yesterday could be ground breaking for us.
Albeit against a weakened toon, we battled and hassled them in their own half. Cork may well be the difference in midfield...but some of the moves Puncheon made were nothing less than top Prem quality.
Our backline will draw more confidence from the clean sheet.

I was at the game yesterday and having read some of the posts this morning I'm wondering whether I was watching the same game. The team did well bt against a poor Newcastle side. Lets not get carried away. I still want to see how we fair against sides like Norwich, Liverpool, Stoke and the 'better' teams in the league.

Ref Ramirez: When you get a BBC commentator during the game using the word "sublime" several times about a player, it's hard to justify a claim that someone wasn't worth the money paid.
Ref "Rodriguez a total waste of space", he scored a goal that was incorrectly judged offside. What do you want from him?
Ref "Lambert lazy again". Were you facing the pitch? He ran himself ragged.
It's OK saying you "want to see how we fair (sic)" against better teams (in which you include Stoke with the worst pass completion in the league) yet you sound like you're expecting disaster rather than waiting to see. Yes, we'll struggle against "the likes of United, City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham" but we're not only playing them this season. It might have felt like that at he start of the season but now we're playing a few teams who have smaller second strings than Man U and who can't have threeplayers injured and still put out a world-class team, i.e. the teams on the bottom half of the table.
It wasn't perfect, I'll accept, but it was a great deal better for most of the fans there than your pen-portrait would suggest.

Think now things are coming together, it was not a case of giving NA the time to get results. but giving the squad time to adjust to changes. NA said he would not bow down to pressure and start playing differently and even i admit i was not 100% confident with that. But boy he is proving everyone wrong now. Big difference for me is Shaw who has really come in with passion and fight, Cork making the difference we needed in Midfield. And Remirez who is just outstanding for us, not only as an individual but how he slots in with the team. My only worry, come next season think alot of our players will have bids for them. Puncheon, Lallana, Cork, Shaw, Lambert, schneiderlin, Lambert, Remirez Think teams will be coming for them soon, just hope we can get them to commit to Saints long term. Remirez worries me more, cause he came to Saints for the money, so if a big team come in and offer him more is he gonna be loyal and stay or go because of the money?.

Blackburn Rovers fans who have joined forces to try to buy the club have unveiled their campaign strategy at a supporters' meeting.
The Rovers Trust was officially launched at the event at Blackburn Cathedral earlier.
Its plans to buy the club from owner Venky's, who bought Rovers for £43m two years ago, have been supported by MPs and former players.
The trust has already raised almost £3m from fans buying shares.

Nor have I just watched the game again having recorded it on sky where you can pick any of yesterdays Prem matches.

The lads (let's not forget the youngest team in the PL) took the game by the scruff of the neck and dominated (just like at QPR), they showed no sign of letting up until the final whistle. Nobody (not even NA) is suggesting this is the finished article but who can doubt they are rising to the challenge. I for one am very proud of that performance.

We should speak to the council and have a street named after it - Skates End, stick a load of inbred chavs in there and make a tv soap called Skates enders!
We could have something flamboyant like The Great Wednesday or something hard hitting like Flatten Fratton Day.
One thing is for sure, just as we light bonfires on Nov 5 as a tribute to Guy Fawkes, on Dec 14 we must fry fish!
We need to find out who the judges are and if they make the right decision, recommend them for the Freedom of Southampton, knighthoods, if not future royalty!

Best results would be Villa v Reading a draw, and QPR a win at Sunderland.

I've stuck to the 'never quote them' principle since it came into being. Only indirect retorts from me

at the end of the day that was the best performance iv'e seen from saints this season , if a few can still find negatives than that's their problem !

The game's not on TV live and Clattenburg's going to want a very low key occasion with no contentious decisions or massive talking point incidents. OK Mark?I agree, the save is probably the best I have ever seen. COYS

I find it quite amusing reading some of our own fans comments about players. Why do some people go to games when they clearly don't have a clue? I was at the Newcastle game (STH) and EVERYBODY had a good game. Gaston is a different class and is clearly worth 12 times the amount of POOPEY. He laid on one very unselfishly and was in the right spot to take the second. On other threads I have read that Maya and Clyne are not up to Prem. standards. Both have been outstanding for us and are continuing to improve. Clyne in particular must be one of the buys of the season. Solid in defence and great going forward. Spiderman and Cork have come in for some criticism too. They are doing the job they were put there to do. Sometimes that can go unnoticed. Considering Cork has had a layoff he has been totally outstanding in every game. Fonte has stepped up to the plate and so has Punch too. And I never thought I would say that. All in all we are definitely much better than our league position and points tally would suggest. Roll on Wednesday and another great performance.
