Rickie Lambert says Southampton goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga doesn't need to apologise for his error in 1-1 draw with Norwich
10:00am Thursday 29th November 2012 in Saints News
Saints striker Rickie Lambert said there was no need for goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga to apologise to his teammates following his blunder against Norwich.
Gazzaniga allowed a tame free-kick from Robert Snodgrass to sneak by him at the near post last night, handing the Canaries a 1-1 draw at St Mary’s.
Lambert, who had given the home side the lead, revealed that the 20-year-old cut a dejected figure in the dressing room after the match.
“He didn’t have to apologise to us,” said Lambert. “You could see he was disappointed.
“He has done really well the last few weeks and it was a just little lapse in concentration.
“He is more disappointed than us and these things happen. It is how you respond to it.”
The draw meant that Saints extended their unbeaten Premier League run to four matches.
However, they have also slipped back into the relegation zone.
Lambert admitted he was frustrated that the team had failed to seize the opportunity to win a third consecutive game.
“I am definitely frustrated not to get the three points,” said Lambert, whose goal marked his sixth strike of the season.
“I thought we played really well in the first half and I thought we were definitely going to win it.
“We’ve come in disappointed at half-time and felt we could have pushed on in the second half.
“We haven’t managed to do that so, yeah, I am disappointed.”

I'm not blaming him but he has to work on his positioning, he is still young and is learning.
What I would say is that's two draws out of our last three at home which have been the result of two mistakes, we have to cut out the errors.
Norwich did make it difficult for us but their attitude changed after they had scored.
I think a lot of people would have taken 4pts out of 6 for our last two games, but I would have rather the results been the other way round, as I think Norwich are going to be in the dog fight with us.
All we have to do now is go to Anfield and get a result.
I can't understand why some fans booed at half time, they are obviously plastics.

Right, Anfield. How amazing will it be to see Rickie and Nigel walk out of the tunnel? It'll be like dreams coming true.

Nonetheless, he's getting better and he's learning - no dodgy passes out at all. I think he'll be a great keeper in time and Rickie's saying the right thing because any lack of confidence will hamper his decision making.
Nonetheless, at the end I pleased with a draw - having feared the worst as the second half progressed. And 8 points from the last four unbeaten games (with only two goals conceded in three) is real progress.
Liverpool will be huge for Rickie and Nigel. I'd be inclined to field Kelvin to keep cool below the Kop, but dropping Gazza would cement any damage to his confidence.
Still, Nigel will have to live with the decision made while looking up the dimly lit lane of future uncertainty - while the rest of us will have the luxury of judging the scene when it becomes a wide road bathed in the bright sunlight of hindsight.

David Seaman v Holland, Word Cup qualifier, Rotterdam, October 1993 - The whole world knew Ronald Koeman was going to flick his free kick into the opposite corner to where Seaman was standing - and so he did to make sure England missed USA 94.
Our GK stocks do seem to be a problem area. I think Gazza is being exposed too early to the pressures of No 1 in a prem team.
Brad Friedal is a name being bandied around for Jan, out of interest what is Shay Given up to currently?

His reaction was that Gazza was hopeless, he said he was rooted to the spot on several crosses, he could see the worry spread across the back four who then stopped passing back to him and of course his positioning of the wall for the free kick and subsequent mishandling of the shot.

Sorry fella, but I also think Gazza is not up to it.
The wall was fine, he just let it go under him. I think he is a very nervous keeper. He appears cocky at times but I think it is hiding his nerves.
Every time the defence got the ball they seemed to be under the instruction of ' no back passes'. That really made life difficult and nearly caught out Yoshida & Fonte a couple of times. The defence is improving all the time but at the moment Gazza is causing more anxiety than needed.
I am going to Liverpool and I think in that atmosphere you need experience. KD should come in. He served us well for the last 2 yrs. He will be fine. Gazza has to accept 2 big blunders in 2 home games means he has to be rested. Not the end for him, just a rest.
I still think we will get a point at Liverpool .

Before the QPR game I was afraid that we'd be down and out by the time the transfer window re-opened. As it stands though we may not be in the bottom 3 when January arrives which is an excellent platform to build on. A few shrewd signings and we should be safe well before the final day.
Personally, I'd play Kelvin in goal with a view to finding a top class keeper in January. Gazza was surely signed as a future number 1 and I think we all agree he has the potential.

Why not criticise Clyne for diving in on the edge of the box (cardinal sin for a defender)? Why not criticise our attackers for not scoring more than one in a game against Norwich?
One error from our best prospect in the goalkeeping department (when he also made a half-decent save from Holt's header) is not the end of the world.
I hope he doesn't go the way of Bart and lose all confidence because the 'fans' start to get on his back.

We're in the Premier league, in case u haven't noticed. There's no room for sentiment (Kelvin didn't get much did he?). 3 games out of the last 5 have seen C*ck ups from Gazza. I think he will be a great kepper, but not yet. Send him out to a championship side to learn his trade (eg how to position a wall), sell Boruc & Kelvin (although I'd give him another chance as I think he's a good keeper) and buy Brad Friedel - about to be dropped by Spurs but still a top quality goalie.
How can we accept such basic errors costing us points? Yes, some great saves from Gazza, but too many mistakes.

The mistake is clearly down to NC and NA who've left the squad in the toughest league in the world with a novice keeper and two that are well and truly over the hill.
If LMcM rightly said a good keeper is worh 10 points a season then a bad one must be worth minus 10 = 20 points the difference beween relegation and mid table comfort.
Since when is Rickie the club spokesman? ---- he's neither the manager or the captain --- I hope he doesn't fall foul of Cortese for saying what he thinks.
Has Solent Interiors been paid yet?

Don't think Gazza's positioning was wrong, the wall could have been better but the ball went through his hands.
Lambo, Shaw and Gaston looked tired with 30 mins left and I would have made the changes of Jay Rod, Mayuka and Ben at around that time, but hey who am I!
Lets get a positive result on Saturday.
we should be winning at home!
not drawing at home to norwich and swansea!
What divine right do we have to win at home against similar teams to ourselves?
Of course you would like to beat these teams but from my experience Football's not like that, otherwise Norwich wouldnt of beaten Man Utd & Arsenal at home would they?

I was right in line with the Norwich free kick (from my Kingsland seat) and said the wall was not positioned properly (much too far to the right as you look at the goal). Gazza didn't seem to take command of it - again, maybe his youth and inexperience).

Saints dominated most of the first half, admittedly against 12 men as usual.
Deservedly Saints took the lead only to be spoiled by the 12 man (inblack),who made his worst of several dodgy decisions.
We seem to be plagued by these "quality" refs, didn't we hope they would be better when we got to the Prem.
Saints were badly affected by this and after the break never got back to the same level.
Our players were struggling to try to get control,I have to say our recent midfield domination went missing.
I am of the view that Sundays game took a lot out of the boys, particularly Punch who looked tired from the start, why he had to suffer for 80 mins is a mystery.
Norwich were lucky to have had the extra day rest.
Big possitive though,Luke Shaw has been a revelation
Onward now to Liverpool, hope the boys can get lift themselves for this one.
Rickie will certainly be up for it even if he is still kn@ckered,I know he will demand It from the others too.
Refrain from the mistakes and give the travelling fans a great trip home .

Interesting stuff about the old firm. Bertie Auld is well before my time but, if correct, it's fascinating that a protestant played for Celtic back in the day. I had always thought that Mo Johnson (who played for both) was the first to play for (note the quotation marks) 'the wrong denomination'.

I said to my mate as he positioned himself for the free kick " he's standing too far over leaving his near post free" and look what happened.

Don't get me wrong, Gazza has the potential, but we really need to stop leaking such poor goals.
Even for the forward players; it must be so disappointing when we make such basic mistakes at the back, as it's so hard scoring goals at this level.

Is it that he doesn't do it unless asked, or has Gazza told him he doesn't need it! We could all see the bl**dy great gap from the Kingsland! Still, as others have commented giving away a soft goal was not really the difference from Sunday, we just didn't have the cutting edge to score the other chances we created, and there where a lot of tired legs. The team have only just stepped up to the level of intensity needed to win in this league, and I think Wednesday was just a bit too soon to do it all again. Lets hope they can put on a good show at Anfield, then I think Nigel will have to try to get some sort of rotation on the go.

Gazza was of course at fault....which simply highlights the fact that goalkeeping errors can be game changing (whereas outfield players can rely on their colleagues to get them out of sticky situations).
Yes....a top class keeper would help us...but let's keep things in perspective....there
's plenty of other keepers making mistakes out there.
If we'd made more of our possession up front, we'd have gone in 3-1 up at half time and gone on to take the 3pts.

JWP is competing against a good five man midfield bunch who seem to have been on good form recently (though I thought Spiderman was well off form last night). JWP got his chance while Cork was off (and I still think Cork is one of the major reasons we're back on track)
When it comes to Luke, he was given the chance after Danny Fox made a few mistakes - he took his chance and looks very solid, so he keeps being picked. Deservedly.

The reason we didn't get the win was the movement up front, lambert was static after his goal.
Norwich played a clever game, got players behind the ball and defended well. I'm not sure our attacking players, after 20 mins, really worked hard enough to create space and time for each other. We need to be better, newcastle gave us time that Norwich didn't. Where or have we got a plan b? Would have an injection of pace up front been more beneficial?
Plus side, our full backs looked mustard. Shaw gets better with every game and is cool as a cucumber. Clyne is like sh1t in a field.... All about every where!
Tough game against Liverpool on Saturday, if we don't up our effort could prove painful.

I'm surprised Mayuka wasn't brought on to replace him for the last ten minutes or so. He'd have terrified a knackered Norwich defence.
As a general point, I do sometimes think NA is a bit late with substitutions in general since we've been in the Prem. Perhaps the abuse he got for the subs earlier in the season got to him. Alternatively, perhaps he know a bit more than me!

Great judgment for a young man - prepared to play his way out but also hoofs it to row Z when he has to. He is bound to have a poor run at some stage - always happens with young players - and I don't think Fox is good enough. Problem will be to get someone good enough in the window who doesn't force Shaw out of the team. Reeves might be good enough as back up but he looked nervous last night.

on another note i do love the way the wums get all defensive and aggressive and start name calling, whilst they are having a dig at the regular posters on here. what they dont understand is that we all have different views and would all pick different teams and tactics, however we can debate these issues sensibly, with humour, but without namecalling or getting aggressive. the 1 thing that we do have in common is that we love saints and will defend our team against people who have no respect for our squad or manager or chairman. there is 1 who posts here saying that you cant say anything against NA or the kangaroo court will have a go at you, well anyone can say he has picked the wrong players or tactics or even got subs wrong, fine debate it, but just to tack the p out of him for a poor picture is just juvenile and quite sad. i have never known any saints fan who would do this, to pretend that you go to games is so sad as its easy to find you out! 1 wum couldnt even research season tickit prices, another didnt even know about fireworks at an away game. your attempts and wind ups are as rubbish as your lives. next time you look in the mirror take a good long hard look and say to yourself " what has my life come to, shouldnt i be out meeting people and enjoying the company of real people, or should i continue to pretend to be something i am not, to try to annoy football fans?" i wont call you poopey fans because i dont even think you are football fans! poopey fans would an do make themselves known, and to be honest i respect them for that! i dont care if you call me names, water of a ducks back, i just think you need to grow up. your not around in this world for long so make the most of it! you never know you might even find a girl who likes you!

ghk230473 wrote:I disagree with your contention about the position of defenders. Yes pace scares defenders and they sit back a yard or two to allow for that, but attackers with pace also sit back further to allow for their pace as an advantage. Ricky pins the defences back and that affords us much space just outside the box. Do Prado (as an example) runs the line of the defence and is controlled by that line as they move out.

I do agree with your comment on an injection of pace for last nights game though. A chance for some rotation of players was lost. I posted on here yesterday morning that if we tried to play the same way as Sunday we would tire in the second half.
If we keep trying to play the strongest 11, they will become the weakest 11, if we keep trying to play the same way, we will soon get found out. All teams do.
Still, unbeaten in 4, let's make it 5! COYS!

As for the kangaroo court - I haven't had a hard time for my views , some need to learn to put their opinions forward in an objective and reasoned way, then they may be heard. Across the board I've found my fellow Saints fans to be respectful as I am (excluding Tebourba of course who deserves every thing he gets!!)

Great comment Ricky, lads and NA must be up for their Anfield visit. Agreed that we need a solid keeper to help us secure our premier league survival. Gazza is a good prospect so it will be interesting to see how NA reacts in January.
Yeah yeah lessons learned and all - but we can't afford to 'on the job' training!!

His kicking generally is much better than either of the other two, and he gets the ball out quicker.
How often do you see Kelvin come off his line for crosses - they don't call him Dracula for nothing!
I say we look to the future - he will learn. He is a talent we need to give some experience to...and not let him sit on the bench and turn out like Bartman.
The defensive unit needs time to gel - I thought they were getting better every game.
I seem to remember Kelvin getting beaten time after time at his near post over the last 2-seasons. He is by far the most experieinced keeper - but that doesn't mean he's the best for the club. If Nigel picks Gazza on merit after a weeks training then that's good enough for me!
