Adkins speculation resurfaces

Nigel Adkins Nigel Adkins

Saints may be basking in the glory of arguably their finest result since returning to the Premier League but Nigel Adkins is still likely to have field questions over his future.

That’s because reports in Spain have linked former Argentinean international defender and Espanyol manager, Mauricio Pochettinho, with the Saints job, even though there is still a successful manager in the hot seat.

The rumours have surfaced at a bizarre time with Saints, fresh from a 2-2 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, riding high on the back of a run of form that has seen them beaten just twice in 12 Premier League games to pull clear of the drop zone.

It is Adkins who has overseen that massive upturn in form, just as he oversaw two back-to-back promotions to get Saints back into the top flight.

Where do these rumours come from? If Cortese is insincere and back stabbing Nigel should and would be the first to know, what nonsense, he hasn't half finished this season yet to fullfill his ambitions, if there is any grain of truth Nigel wouldn't wait to be humiliated and wouldn' be unemployed 5 minutes, his phone would be red hot, this and any other rubbish that surfaces should be ignored, let the man get on and complete his work

Just more media rubbish, if NC was going to jetizon NA it would have been after 10 games. Yet I have never thought it was on the cards, they share the same vision and dream. The fans have stayed loyal to him and the club is united.
You note the word 'reports' nothing directly quoted and lets face it what the papers do not know they make up as always.

Nigel is doing a fantastic job and the players and fans are right behind him. The odds are that a replacement would do worse not better.

Some linked Harry with a return before he got QPR. I watched his press conference the other night and he talked about the fee and wages of a deal that wasn't yet done. Did people really think he and Cortese could possiby work together for more than a day? Get real. Nigel is one of the very few managers that can fit in with Cortese's management style.

I hope this is all just media rubbish. In the back of my mind though I remember one of the only interviews Cortese did when Adkins was appointed. He was asked whether Adkins was his number one choice as we had been linked with a lot of high-profile managers. He basically said that Adkins was the type of manager needed to get a club from League 1 up to the Premiership and that after that a different, more high profile manager may be required.

NC would have sacked NA at the start of the window if he was going to. We've got a good team that seem to be improving and signs are we are about to strengthen the team. Hardly signs if a regime change. I'd like to see another proven defensive coach from a top European club background though.

He is a manager who quickly changes
things if not working.
The defense is now very good compared to the start of the season, hard work on the training ground from a team who love their manager.
A manager who is loved by fans and player a certain Jose comes to mind.

Very good point indeed. The personalities do seem to work together well. Anyone else would clash with Cortese.

As for the Echo .. words fail me again .. they have to sell papers but every time these stories emerge and they give them print space they tarmish their own reputation. Its fast turning into a giveaway rag like the metro and Evening Strandard.

Why does The Echo keep up this personal attack on Nigel Adkins and seek every avenue to undermine the club.
The paper should be more positive in the reporting aspect as I am certain I am one of many fans getting sick and tired of headlines which appear to be totally false.
Become more professional in reporting stories regarding The Saints or close your sports section down.

From the Newsnow website for all Saints related stuff, the first mention of this was from the Mirror, then the Star. Another thread also menions that this Argentinian fella has recently got the sack, so he can't be that good.As others have said this is more of the usual anti-Saints crap from the national media.
Unusually, for the Echo, I thought the DE piece attempted to be quite neutral (relatively speaking) for once.

I think this sort of thing just seems to motivate the team to play even better.

Clearly, contrary to what some have said on here, the players love the manager and want to play for him and they'll do that again on Monday.

If this did turn out to be true then NC has obviously been inspired by the wonderful atmosphere generated at Stamford Bridge since they sacked their successful manager.

Don't suppose there is any chance NC was talking to their manager in relation to potential transfer targets and the paper's jumped to the wrong conclusion?

Already got the best man for the job and that has been proved with back to back promotions and the huge improvement we have seen in the squad over the course of our first season back in the toughest league in the world. Which English PL side is suddenly emerging as a new force = SFC which EPL side is scouting Europe and being linked to every half decent young player = SFC.

This is an "engineered" rumour. To raise the profile of an ordinary defender and an even more ordinary manager. There is absolutely no substance to it whatsoever. Nigel was given 5 games after the West Ham farce to deliver and he delivered. Redknapp was informally offered the job if still available and if Nigel was shown the door. But no one else has been approached and Nigel has the job until the end of the season at least.

Watched a piece about Yoshida on Sky sports, he was full of praise for Nigel and said what a nice man he was and how well he treats the players to get the best out of them.
I think Nigel should hang in there carry on doing what he's doing and if Cortese gets rid of him he should take Saint's to the cleaners.
We all know Nigel makes the odd mistake but who doesn't? we are in the position we are because of him.

Can't blame the Echo for reporting a rumour that is being quoted by other papers. Hope it is tosh. The team and fans believe in Nigel. He has got a team of good players play above themselves, so that I feel that we could get a result against any side. Only 2 losses in 12 games, including draws against Stoke and Chelsea away and Arsenal at home. These teams have better players than us undoubtedly and yet Nigel can get the team to carry on and grab points.

Still basking in the glory of that equaliser - the moment when reality was completey suspended as Punch flicked the ball up on to this left foot - when it all slows down like that you can see the future a moment ahead in time -that the ball was going to hit the back of the net was never in doubt. This moment is still with me it was also the moment that confirmed for me that under NA's leadership this team will stay up. It is what NC believes in; if he didn't NA would be gone. The record speaks for itself 12 games only 2 losses sure we need to turn draws into wins; but they will come - starting with a hard fought win over Everton on Monday - they don't have a good away record against us never done well when they come to us.

It's FA Cup fixture congestion time, would be great to see the likes of QPR and a few others derail any momentum with replays, postponements, and a nice mass of mid-week fixtures in April and May.

Yep - both Reading and QPR have easy ties and both should go into the 5th round. I also think a few teams above us will have a bad patch - Fulham and Wet Spam already are. Speaking of which apart from sending Harry's QPR packing really looking forward to setting the record straight and putting so called Big Sam in his place.

JD - appreciate your view point entirely, fredom of seech is what generations of my family (like many others) have fought for, and some have not returned home in doing so

I don't hate the Echo, all I was saying was that this story is ill researched, and little other than re-reported mash.

If the angle had been reporting what was said, and then adding we have used our contacts (and don't tell me despite the fact that the club and DE are at loggerheads they don't have some contacts still in SMS) then I wouldn't have commented like I did

Freedom of speech and all that ;-)

I don't mind bad news, bad performances I jst asked for it to be fair and balanced like a good journalism should be.

Oh my God, fair play Saintly Soul. Makes me disgusted to be a Saints fan. Thought Pardew was bad, but this is insanity.

There goes our three points on Monday and probably our Premier League survival chances.

Whether we stay up or not, my relationship with Saints has been seriously damaged again and our position as a family, community club has been tarnished beyond repair. It's a very, very sad day - totally deflated.

Thinking on Wednesday what an awful club Chelsea are in the way they go about their business and now another despotic chairman just went and put us in the same category. can he not see the effect this type of thing has had on Chelsea. Who are we getting Di Matteo? he'll be in good company as he has is also abackstabber. The fans and players were doing it for NA now all the good work that has put us in a position to go forward and secure prem status is jeopardised. Its a disgrace.

I hope I am proven wrong but I think this a poor decision by Cortese. It was obviously clinically planned in typical.Cortese fashion,apparenly the new manager Mauricio Pochettino had been researching the team for weeks.Thanks Nigel for all your wonderful efforts,Saints fans will never forget you.

And before you say it I don't work for the Echo, just can't believe people don't see the irony of slagging off something you are coming back to again, and again, and again.
Well said - the sooner the Echo bashers go away the better !! I don't particularly like the paper because of it's history - but I don't feel the need to whinge about them like some on here constantly do!!
