Everton boss expects tough Saints test at St Mary's

Daily Echo: David Moyes David Moyes

Everton boss David Moyes does not expect the Saints players to be unduly affected by the shock managerial change at St Mary’s.

The Toffees will provide the first opponents for new boss Mauricio Pochettino when they travel to the south coast for tonight’s Premier League clash.

Pochettino, formerly in charge of Spanish side Espanyol, took over the Saints hotseat on Friday following the sudden sacking of Nigel Adkins.

The former Scunthorpe boss had achieved back-to-back promotions and appeared to have turned things around after a shaky start to life in the Premier League.

But that was not enough for ambitious chairman Nicola Cortese.

Adkins was hugely popular and the decision will have shocked fans and players alike, but Moyes does not think it will make his side’s task easier tonight.

The Scot said: “It's a really difficult one to judge because I actually think Southampton have been playing quite well. “I'm not quite sure what effect it will have on the players but when you get a new manager you get on with it.

“I don’t think players mope around too long about the manager, and I mean that with real respect for Nigel, but players just get on with their job. “I would expect them to do that and it will be difficult.

“I don't know what the atmosphere will be like, I would have expected the supporters to have probably been in Nigel’s camp because of the work he’d done there.”

I would like to see the headlines that, Everton picked the wrong day to turn up at St. Marys, but there is so much involved here, with so many mixed emotions involved, I hope the Players want to impress the new Gaffer. I hope our crowd realise that anything negative will be bad for us, however badly we feel about what has happened, (and yes I do too), we have to get behind the Players, the team and Southampton Football Club, nothing else matters.

Of course. He wants Everton to win. He will think "How can I turn this to our advantage?" Saints fans must not let this happen. Three points are at stake, and I want them all, regardless of all the emotional energy spent lately. Usually, players up their performance for the new boss (look at QPR) so I'm hoping for a big response from the players and a great win.

I want Saints to win tonight, however, I believe Nigel got the very best out of these players and the fans.
I fear the worst tonight and for the rest of the season, I hope I am wrong.

I also agree that NA should have been given to the end of the season, but he is no longer here and wish him all the best and we all owe him much gratitude as many posters have pointed out during the last fee dats.
Now i still hope Saints do well being a fan for many years. Hope for. Win tonight, anyone who wants any different cannot say they support SFC
