Saints' FA Cup winner Jim Steele turned away from St Mary's Stadium

JIM STEELE and LAWRIE McMENEMY JIM STEELE and LAWRIE McMENEMY

SAINTS legend Jim Steele has revealed he was asked to leave the Dell Sports Bar at St Mary’s earlier this season.

Steele, man of the match when Saints won the 1976 FA Cup final, was ejected from the cafe shortly after moving back to the area in September.

The 62 year-old said: “I’d heard all the things about Le Tissier and Cortese and this and that so when I bought two tickets for the Aston Villa game soon after moving down, I gave my name as ‘James Steele’.

“I was hardly going to say ‘Jim Steele’ even though the girl at the ticket office was only young and wouldn’t have known who I was.

“But the guy behind her said ‘I thought it was you Steeley!’ I said ‘don’t say anything, I might not get a ticket!’ “I don’t totally disagree with what’s been going on, so I bought two tickets thinking one of the ex-Saints would show up sooner or later.

“I went on to the supporters’ club below the stand and two or three came over to shake my hand and say it was great to see me back in town.

“Then this young kid came over and said ‘are you a member sir’? I said ‘no I’m an ex-Saint’ and he said ‘sorry you’re not allowed in, this is a supporters’ club’.

“I don’t blame Cortese for making us buy tickets but to not be allowed in the supporters club...! It wasn’t as if I wanted a free drink or anything!

“I love Saints but this sort of thing doesn’t happen at any other top club. It doesn’t make sense.

“After being thrown out I wasn’t even going to go to the game, but the pub round the corner made me feel so welcome. “I went with one of them in the end and it was a great win. I’ve been to every game since.”

Saints declined to comment.

This is the second article they have run on this. All very negative.

Why do some ex-Saints have trouble and others do not?

Did Jim Steele try to arrange anything with the club, or cafe in advance or did he just turn up?

If he just turned up it does put the people running the Cafe in an unfair, awkward position.

From the sound of the article, I doubt Cortese would have even have been aware of it.

I agree. Another very negative article and whilst I do not agree with the poor treatment of ex Saints, a little pre-planning (i.e. a phone call) would/could have gone a long way to gaining membership.

I do not think that NC is trying to erase our history, what history? Ok so we won the FA CUP and stayed in the top division despite limited resources for much of our past but I believe this club is going somewhere now and like any successful business, you do not get there by clinging on to the past.

Total respect to Jim but its a members only Club bar.. you pay a sub to drink there. Staff can't serve non-members ex saint or not.

I run a members only services social club, its cheap but ex services can't have free access - life membership is given to those club members who give a very long distinguished service to the club like 20 or 30yrs!
The honour is not given lightly.

Membership of the dell sports bar is 45 quid - there are other bars.

I remember Mel Blyth and Jim Steele at the back they were a tough pairing.
Okay take note of the posts above but all Jim was trying to do was buy a drink in the supporters club, lol not after anything free. Maybe it could of been handled better and he could of been asked if he wanted to take out membership or allowed in as a guest for a day.
In the end though the lad was following the rules and it was not discrimination against Jim, it was policy for anyone.
Yes as we know it is the echo on its crusade against Cortese. With anti club articles again.
Its taking a long time here for people to realize that the real world finally caught up with Saints. It is no longer a family club but a business, that has to attain certain goals. There is no sentiment, except on the terraces and pitch, certainly not in the boardroom of any major club these days.
When football football got into big TV deals it sold its soul and the game on and off the field changed radically for right and wrong.
Having watched Saints for 50 years I disagree there is no history. Other than 8 or 10 clubs i bet the rest of the league would snatch our hand off in that respect. There is no one that comes within a mile of us on the south in that period. Not reading, brighton, bournemouth, pompey, aldtershot, no one.

I can understand the points given about the dell cafe being a private members club, but the general treatment given to past players/managers is a little out of order.
You couldn't imagine the likes of Everton, L'pool, Manu, Arsenal etc...etc.... behaving this way to yesterdays hero's.
We seem to be heading down the Chelsea road where fans have become completely alienated from the club.

I know Dear Leader is hell bent on success, but surely most of the PR disasters of late could have been avoided.

There are certain players that I wouldn't let loose anywhere near the ground! However there should be a bit of respect for good club servants. Much as I like Jim Steele it is not good form to go down this track, and not helpful for the future which is more important than the past at the moment. The Cortese interview simply didn't ask the right questions, I haven't seen the Sun version yet. NC was asking us to go along with his plans, OK but please try and meet us halfway so that we can do it together. The best way to go is to engage with the people that are using their scarce funds to follow the Club that they support. Informative news will stop the speculation. Cortese did not thank Nigel, but he did say it was difficult for him. He indicated that it was hard for him not because of results but because of their great personal relationship. That along withis his acknowledgement might just make a half an apology. Maybe he feels thank you like transfers should be done behind closed doors!!

Cortese indicated that it was the right time to make the change for the team. The sun indicated the training ground had gone stale and there may have been some player pressure in Adkins sacking. Total gossip but Will Fox stated "Wow, Adkins was sacked was cuz the players told Cortese he was tactically inept. Lambert & Schneiderlin were main protagonists "

Lets face it most on here have criricised Adkins substitutions and subs at some point,

He is willing to sacrifice his reputation but he thinks those that aim negative comments do so without knowing him and harm the club. He would never dream of doing it to them! Nice he showed he is not delusional and he is aware of Le Tiss and the pounding his reputation has taken.

In running the club, he explained he was not ruthless, but a perfectionist. Could explain the program sellers, old program stand, withdrawal of freebies, re-organsation of catering (and reversing the decision). The one issue I take issue with in his area, How did it happen that they allowed the case with Solent Interiors get to court and then not even bother showing up or commenting afterwards. Great attention to detail Cortese.

Apart from that, a reasonable interview.

We are all welcome as long as we have the club in our hearts.

The editor's job is to sell papers and to get as many hits on it's website as possible.
To do this the editor has to be ruthless and will probably have to forego his popularity to achieve his goal.

I've been critical of him in the past but I see now that he has the best interests of the club at heart. I think his change in manager will turn out to be inspirational. He's clearly taking it very seriously as he has been fully involved with the team whilst they have been in Barcelona this week. Where is the DE reporting that? For once let's give the man some credit and to those at the DE the benefit of the doubt. Please DE stop latching on to these minor petty incidents that are designed to cast doubt over NC they're getting boring!!!!!

Although NC did say it was a tough decision to make, which is a back handed compliment. Yes I have heard that MLT has requested a clear the air meeting, if that works it would be quite a combination to take us forward, if not draw a line under it and move on.

Interesting stuff ..........' The Sun' with MP

Pochettino wants positive football. He likes his teams to press up the pitch and, during an evening training game here, was constantly urging his players to get the ball wide and play a higher tempo.

He said: “The first thing people can expect from me is my passion for the job. I want a spirit in the team — a side with a soul. I want us to be nice to watch with a lot of dynamism with the ball.”

Cortese is incredibly ambitious. He does not want to simply survive in the Premier League — he wants Saints playing European football.

Pochettino said: “There are no limits to our ambition. We’re looking to go as high as possible.

“We’ve our idea how we want to play. We don’t just want to win — we want to do that inside our philosophy.

1) Le Tis is not happy 'cause NC &ML beat him to buying the club, that is all. 2) If NC did 'trash his house', would he not be done for breaking and entering and criminal damage? OK im not a youngster i was born around the time of the Cup final. As, born and bread sotonian, i know who Jim Steal is but in all honesty I'm not sure that I would recognise him in the flesh.

If he didn't try to arrange anything then what can he expect.

From what I can read he made efforts not to alert the club to his presence the turned up at the official supporters club

What a position to put staff in?

would there even be an issue if it was Chris Marsden (Fa Cup Finalist) or Dean Hammond (Captain during back to back promotions) that turned up unannounced

Its not for the manager of a supporters bar to decide who is a "legend" ad who isnt quite "legend" enough so the rules are kept simple.

Going back to Sainty, Saint, Saint for a minute.

I have to say however much I like Le Tiss and respect his career. In the last few seasons his comments have been aimed at undermining Cortese and therefore the club.
I think basically our Matt needs to let it go along with one or two others.
Cortese mentioned how he and NA had a good relationship until the last seconds and it was difficult for him to let him go but he felt it was time for a change, He said if i have to be unpopular for saints to reach their full potential so be it.
I feel bad about NA going but I still trust NC to do the right thing for the club.

There's often Echo knocking on here and I haven't been one to join it - until now.

The Pink was largely negative this weekend too - still going on in spades about Nigel and complaining that supporters are now being treated as mere customers and that increasingly the club is being run, God forbid, "as a business."

Of course it's easy to whip up sentiment using this stuff and the article about Jim Steele. Nicola is hardly no 'charmer' and our relationship with the club is more emotional than financial. But we know only too well what happens to clubs nowadays which are not run well as businesses. And many fans who want to be seen as 'supporters' when things are going well, soon revert to being complaining 'customers' when they are going badly.

Success today only comes with financial clout and that only comes by running clubs in a sound way - or through a purchase by a billionaire sugar daddy who will use it, for a very uncertain period, as a personal toy.

I don't believe that Nicola's only motive is financial. I think he has a mission to create a successful long term future for the club - a mission which he planted in Markus Leibherr's mind and which he then shared with him. Markus did not buy a business. He didn't need to or want to. He bought a dream.

Only time will tell whether or not Nicola will succeed, but so far, three managers and three divisions later, I'm essentially a happy supporter AND a satisfied customer.

The club could and should, however, improve its' PR and communications on sensitive issues - at no extra cost at all.

The Echo might also consider how far it wants to take the obvious rift with the club and whether or not it is becoming seriously adrift from the views held by the majority of its' Saints supporting readers.

Meanwhile, even if the somewhat hysterical critics are right, I'd still rather have a club with no soul than a soul with no club (as we may soon see down the M27).

I don't understand how there is a ban on legends, Le Tiss has a season ticket, as we know from him getting into trouble for letting someone else use it when he was already in the stadium. Dodd is the academy manager, and Terry Paine is an ambassador. Steele was also sold tickets to the match, so there's definitely no general ban on legends

If Benali is banned it is still relevant, more so after Cortese statement that anybody who has Saints in their heart is welcome. You may accuse Benali of many things, (Dodgy own goals, dodgy tash) but he definitely has saints in is heart.

I might be wrong but he attended the Man United FA cup game January 2011 and looked Ok, event hough this is after the original incident happended.

The daily mail article where this was reported Saints side of this as well:

"Southampton say they have received no legal correspondence from Benali and insist there is money owed back from Cortese's deposit. Saints believe the dispute has more to do with Benali no longer being a club ambassador."

This was one month later in Feb 2011.

If Benali was/is still banned it's wrong as this is a private civil issue. I think the club reserves right of non entry, but in light of Cortese's recent statement should Franny not be allowed to return and pay for his tickets and buy his own drinks like the rest of our legends?

I can't see there is any evidence that a case was ever filed. Maybe i have not looked hard enough, and maybe Benali never got round to it.

The Echo had a personal vendetta against Cortese, they tried to destabilize him after Pardew was sacked. All this ticket stuff and trashing allegation was before all that.

Certain old players and managers seem to gob off at will about him and have done from the beginning.

Totally agree! NC ROCKS! Our club in very good hands, and he keeps things very simple!! He talks about Southampton FC not individuals! NC will take Southampton FC to the top!

For those who missed, he dose say his relaintionship with NA was the best up until the last seconds, and that matches NA comments constantly while in charge. I believe NC has been straight with NA all the way, and NA was always aware of the bigger picture, the club! So WAKE UP DE! I am sure when NA decides to talk, he will thank and compliment NC.

With MP interview with the Sun paper (not the DE) which you can see on the BBC website, is also excellent! It seems the CLUB are on a responsese PR route with the fans and a message to the footballing world while in Spain! Well done NC!

It may have been a long time ago - but it's still not resolved. Even when it is and all parties are happy with the settlement, it really has got too deep for some people to let go.
It seems obvious to put 2 and 2 together and make the take over the centre of the issue. However blood is thicker than water, and loyalty to friends sometimes knows no boundaries.
I think I understand why the feud is on going. When a person is wronged - there are always 2-sides. It just so happens there are a number of club legends on one side all singing from the same hymn sheet. It's got personal and unfortunately the club is stuck in the middle.

The fact is he brought a ticket and was able to watch the game, I am not sure what the benefits are of being a ex-sfc-legend when it comes to the football club but I don't believe that they are not able to actually buy a ticket and watch the game like the rest of us, its seems the fact was he entered the members only suite and he wasn't a member? I do have some sympathy for the legends of our great club but the owners and their team have alot of money and time invested in the club and are ultimately responsible for its future, like someone said above NC probably knew nothing of this, and I am quite sure that he doesn't read the echo. The recent interview shows that although NC maybe the hard-nosed tryant he is made out to be, he will address issues that are put to him, when the time comes and through the channels that he chooses. The perfect scenario would be if this group of SFC legends meet with the chairman and voiced their views, I'm sure then the air can be cleared, in the end the chairman and legends have the same goal, the ultimate success of the club. I do believe that this in the future will be resolved and the boys can come to some agreement with NC for the sake of the club and the supporters, obviously we do recognise and apprecaite all the great players that have written the history of SFC, but we also want to support the new regime in its vision to take the club forward...!

To my knowledge there isn't a suite for ex players per se. However, there is a box that was previously taken by Leon Crouch, Lawrie Mac etc which I think they now call Ex Saints. If so it would be privately funded and down to the funders to invite who they want.

I don't think ex Saints are banned. However, Franny is. The club rented his house in Chilworth for Cortese when he first arrived. Apparently he ripped up carpets and curtains and replaced with wooden flooring and blinds. Franny wanted it reinstated and it wasn't so he sued. He had to sue the club because the legal contract was between him and the club.

Jim Steel was not thrownout of the ground by NC, he was asked to leave the members bar because of a standing rule that you have to be a member.
Ask people who used to drink at The Chamberlain pub in Sholing for their opinion of JS the pub landord!
He had rules too!

Le Tiss is not happy because:

a) Cortese lied. They have met and he did slander him by accusing him of asking for free tickets

b) If old legends are welcome why is Franny banned. (He confirmed Cortese trashed his house)

c) He has two security guards outside when he is invited to corporate to ensure he goes nowhere but the toilet

d) Still no thanks to Adkins which is disrepectful.

He has asked Saints to arrange sit down talks with the chairman to discuss differences.

Can't see Cortese going for it some how but it would be good.

There's often Echo knocking on here and I haven't been one to join it - until now. The Pink was largely negative this weekend too - still going on in spades about Nigel and complaining that supporters are now being treated as mere customers and that increasingly the club is being run, God forbid, "as a business." Of course it's easy to whip up sentiment using this stuff and the article about Jim Steele.

I like the **** (no mention of the reason he sacked Adkins) that everybody who has Southampton at heart is welcome at the club. Try telling that to Le God, Big Mac, Jim Steele and the programme sellers.
Lawrie Mac does attend games - usually as a guest of a box holder, MLT has season tickets and Jim Steele was asked to leave a members only club by a member of security staff who was not old enough to have been around when we won the cup and not wise enough to ask for advice before asking Steelie to leave.

The programme sellers were the decsion of the Marketing Manager which I think was ill advised, replacing people with 20yrs (30 yrs for one or two) with dolly girls in short skirts makes little sense to me - who takes the blame when one of them is robbed or sexually assaulted?

NC does not Micro manage however he does set very exacting standards which he expects to be met by all staff, he is by his own admission a perfectionist which does by definition make him a difficult man to work for but his dedication to OUR club is unquestionable and I would rather see an ambitious chairman than one who sees 17th place as success.

If you are talking about team management don't you mean roll over Mauricio?

NC's succesful track record as chairman stands for itself. Matt Le Tis, ehhhm, zero experience, zero track record.

Le Tiss can be controversial, NC, well that may be a tie, OK NC might just shade it.

Between Mauricio and Le Tiss for manager, I am sorry, but as much as I love Let Tiss for what he has done for this club, I would go Mauricio.

Please, for the sake of space on these threads, get over your prejudices and personal loyalties and get behind the club. Time has moved on.

If you don't like the change of guard sell your ST and go get a job at the echo. Saying that though, I doubt even they would have you judging from your posts.
