Saints chairman Nicola Cortese defends replacing Nigel Adkins with Mauricio Pochettino
11:22am Sunday 27th January 2013 in Saints News
Nicola Cortese
Southampton's executive chairman, Nicola Cortese, has defended his controversial sacking of Nigel Adkins, describing the timing as ''perfect''.
Adkins was relieved of his managerial duties nine days ago after taking the club to back-to-back promotions and 15th place in the Premier League, with his dismissal arriving two days after a 2-2 draw at Chelsea.
He was immediately replaced by Argentinean Mauricio Pochettino, with the general consensus being that Adkins had been harshly treated.
The Southampton fans certainly felt so and sang their former manager's name during the 0-0 draw with Everton last Monday, but Cortese stands by the move he made.
In an interview with Sky Sports News, he said: ''Nigel and I, we always had a very good relationship, to the last second. It was very tough, not just for him but for me.
''To me, there's one time, which is right, especially if you are 100% convinced it is the right thing. Ultimately for the team it was the right thing, it was perfect timing ''It sounds harsh but it was for the benefit of the progress we want to achieve over the next couple of months and years. It's not only for today but for tomorrow.''
Cortese has attracted criticism in the wake of the sacking, with Saints icon Matt Le Tissier accusing him of having an ego problem.
According to Cortese, though, everything he does is for the benefit of Southampton.
He added: ''Maybe I need to sacrifice my popularity to get the right decision. If that's the case, I'm happy.
''I am a perfectionist. Some people say that's not good, but it helps the football club to keep attention to detail and not stand still.''
On Le Tissier, a one-club man afforded hero status by the Saints fans, he said: ''I don't even know him, he's never met me. Anyone in the past who is associated with the club is stirring negativity towards me should probably ask if it's beneficial for the club. I would not allow myself to judge someone I have never met.''
On the future of the club, but as a whole and with Le Tissier, Cortese asked everyone to get behind his vision.
He said: ''I'd like in the future, for the supporters to buy more into what we do as a club. Not players, managers or chairmen, the club.
''I am not excluding anyone. Anyone who has Southampton at heart has a place.''
• Le Tissier wants clear-the-air talks with Cortese. Read the full story here.

Totally agree! NC ROCKS! Our club in very good hands, and he keeps things very simple!! He talks about Southampton FC not individuals! NC will take Southampton FC to the top!
For those who missed, he dose say his relaintionship with NA was the best up until the last seconds, and that matches NA comments constantly while in charge. I believe NC has been straight with NA all the way, and NA was always aware of the bigger picture, the club! So WAKE UP DE! I am sure when NA decides to talk, he will thank and compliment NC.
With MP interview with the Sun paper (not the DE) which you can see on the BBC website, is also excellent! It seems the CLUB are on a responsese PR route with the fans and a message to the footballing world while in Spain! Well done NC!
The future bright, and the future very bright under NC leadership! We are very lucky indeed!!

Cortese is a businessman and a reat one no arguments but what he has to relaise is this, that FANS will always be emotive and if you communicate then they will BUY IN (hs words) to what he is aiming for.
I know you can't explain everything, and nor would I want them to do, but sacking a manager noone (apart from a very few) were asking to be sacked was stange and did need explaining.
He could have done that at the press conference or in the programme notes

Yes it may well turn out to have been perfect timing, but this interview just highlights how detatched from reality NC is. He is living in cloud cuckoo land if he thinks he is capable of building an inclusive club. He is not capable of that. Regarding his admission that he has never met MLT, just a sad admission that the club is a dis-connected glory-hunting investment machine at the moment. I still think the club is actually in safe hands, but the shabby nature of our "progress" will continue to be a stain on the reputation of the club. If NC had any b@lls he would break down the barriers and get Matt, the Echo and others he has excluded to build a better image for the club and really start to include. But this won't happen.

1) Transfer Window still open
2) we have a 9 day break between games and could get the new manager time with the team in a bonding session in Barcelona
3) We are on the up as a team and therefore momentum is easier to pick up than trying to claw back a negative mindset
4) There was a few days for fans to vent anger before the Everton game so they turned up seeing the bigger picture
It was the perfect time to do it. Nigel has not spoken about it but maybe he had a golden handshake. Honestly was NA the next Alex Ferguson? Probably not. His tactics were iffy often and he is a very good Championship Manger. Time will tell if this was right but if you want to attract bigger names and move forward as a football club/business then you need to make changes when you think you need to.

I think his way of saying it was "perfect" timing can be easily misconstrued.
Although Nigel had obviously began to turn things around, after what can only be the worst ever set of opening fixtures that any promoted team has had to endure.
Cortese had, already in advance, had the new manager studying his future Saints players.
The fact that the January transfer window was available was the obvious time to change and with the opportunity to take the team away to train,to get to know them.
This is what I see was his view of "Perfect".
I like most, was very disturbed by the perceived callousness of Nigel's departure.
He seems to be a very driven character
His interview demonstrates that he intends, come what may,to raise the profile of our club from the average provincial club to one of the leading lights in the premier league.
Time now to move on and get behind the continuing move upward of our great club.

Talk about top six when you're established or you are just putting unnecessary pressure on the team.
There is a well used saying in football, it's boring, but it's true and NA was big on it - take one game at a time.
It's when you look too far ahead that you fall.
Sure, plan, be ambitious, but one thing at a time.
I will support the new manager and help give Saints the best possible chance to stay up, but I'm not going to get carried away talking about us under performing so far or breaking into the top six.
You can if you want, but I'd prefer to take it one step at a time and that means retaining stability and doing the simple things right first.
I don't think Nigel lacked NC's ambition, but I do think NC maybe didn't have the patience to wait for his slowly slowly approach to adapting to Premier League life to evolve.
Time will tell who was right, but logic and history tend to be on NA's side of the story. I'll be supporting the team hoping we buck the trend, but equally I won't be sucking up to NC no matter how much he neglects past legends and club ethics, regardless of how much money he spends to make up for it.
Maybe being selfish, but I'd love him to do both. Maybe seeing former players honoured in some way or even a charity dinner to honour NA's contribution would be a nice touch.
Then lets draw a line and get on with it together, valuing the past but looking to the future.

So you want reasons why this was the right time?
I am a big supporter of NA but onwards and upwards. The mistake NC made was not manning up to the Press on the MP unveiling ceremony.

On top of that, the decision still makes no sense whatsoever - adkins had done nothing but bring success to the club so I'm not sure why NC thought he couldn't take us to the next level - he was bringing through the youngsters, playing great football, had the team and the whole club (or so we thought) united. And I'm still not sure why he thinks Pinocchio is a better bet - he doesn't speak english and had a very average record in Spain.
The decision and the timing doesn't make sense and the handling of it was awful.
Cortese may be right in the long run (I doubt it but he may be) but I for one don't feel quite the same about the club as I did two weeks ago.

I think this shows NC has no understanding of the human element of football - yes, we all want our club to be successful, but at what cost? We, as fans, do identify with certain players and managers - e.g. adkins, mcmenemy, mlt, rickie not only for the success they brought our club, but in the way they do it. The treatment of adkins and the lack of thanks for his success was disgusting and something the cortese apologists on this site have no argument for (because there isn't one!)

Let me ask you, if NA was sacked a month or two earlier would you be wanting a public apology? No? Why now then? NC has shown with the Pardew sacking that he knows what he's doing, Southampton fans were calling for his head after that. Or do you not remember that? If having a chairman with 'no class' leads us to success beyond what we can imagine, then i'd take that over anyone else
I think it is very evident that Mr Cortese is not a nice person. If I have to choose betwen MLT and Cortese I will go for the man who showed loyalty and commitment over many years to Saints and not a man who has not even got the common decency to say a public thank you to Nigel Adkins for what he achieved. Osprey Saint has been pretty consistent in his views as circumstances at the Club have dictated. He does not resort to bad language and name calling, and he has never, in my view, insisted his point of view or opinion is the correct one. He simply states his case, which he is entitled to do.
If you disagree with him, argue your case - don't show yourself up with bad language and name calling.
There, that's my opinion which you may or may not agree with - fortunately it's still a relatively free country!

Everyone has a right to an opinion about the current saints situation, but if it is not the same as opsprey's he tells us to go and support pompey.
Now tell me if that is not defeating ones argument.
I think Cortese is a schmuck, but I will not stop supporting my team because osprey thinks different.

DONT trust Cortese as hes not the person, you want to think he is.
Cortese leased Benalis house in 2009, trashed it and then wouldnt pay for the actual rent on walking out. Benali had to take him to court and several months later, just before it came up, the coward finally paid up.
Unpaid bills for refurb work at SMS and people taking legal action.
Even weird goings on at Staplewood with the main contractor walking off site due to the Club not paying bills.

No one on the outside knows, but if those examples are not complete support for your manager I don't know what is. As for Abramovich - if he wants to waste £50 million quid out of his own pocket that is up to him. NC seems to drive a harder bargain. Most of NA's best signings IMO have been the bargain deals (Cork, Chaplow, Jos H, although he wasn't the first choice CB to be chased at the time). I would say that most of our transfer deals from day 1 with AP and then through NA have been fairly astute and necessary and nearly all turned out to be worth the money given where we are now. Anyone begrudge the reported £1million spent on SLR or Jose? Maybe Waigo and Guly came via NC's contacts, I don't know, but other than Gaston we have not thrown "silly" money around. We will have to wait and see how Veggem turns out. Being like Abramovich with money and players is not the background and behaviour of the people behind saving SFC and that maybe partly the reason why NC took the action that he did. Everyone on here who thinks that lots of transfer deals are imminent I think are misguided by the usual transfer window media frenzy with agents spreading gossip and rumour in respect of dis-affected players. Cortese should stop thinking he is Saints version of Roman Abramovich.
His ego has made him think he can decide which players to buy rather than the manager.
The major difference being Abramovich puts his own money in to the club.

Too many people on here see things in black and white (careful what you wish for, may never see red and white stripes again) and these are the ones that give succour to these dictatorial football 'visionaries' that are taking over our 'beautiful game'- and i am sorry to see that the normally level-headed and succinct Tirau Dan appears to be gravitating into this comedy maelstrom.
This club has just lost it's most highly undervalued (and underpaid) PR man and still the plebians run around barking 'man up, support your club' (at all costs?) while it's being visibly highjacked and packaged as a successful 'product/project' that just happens to be in Southampton. It's these lemming-like 'fans' that should run off now to Man City or Chelski or QPR or MKD if they buy into all this bunk. Or maybe, 'man up' and fight this corporate tide for Southampton- the pride of the South!
If you do read this: Thank you Nicola, but a step too far, you need to get your PR machine out of first gear before everyone wakes up. We're waiting.

No one can take away the fantastic performances and goals of MLT and the memory of his loyalty that kept us in the PL year after year.
The change of manager was a media train crash, poorly handled and made worse by the lack of respect and dignity shown to NA by the club management and the failure of the decision maker to attend the press conference, explain himself (and support the new manager!).
Common courtesy costs nothing and show respect where its due.
Get some decent PR advisers on board and start re-building bridges with the fans and past players.
Don't treat the fans like idiots- explain your actions.
SFC didn't need to take this risk now and if we don't win at Wigan the fans will be 'coming for you'.
Together as one!
Thanks are due to Nigel for the position today.

OSPREYSAINT wrote:The man found out that he had been sacked on thr tv. The man replacing him had been researching the players for weeks (in his own words). With regard to what will standing up to Cortese achieve, maybe nothing. But history will tell you what happens if you throw yourself at their feet. I have supported saints for 25 years. I have taken my sons to the saints and they are fervent supporters. But we all feel that the action of Cortese in sacking Adkins has taken something from our club that made it a little bit special. To be frank, the ability of some on here, who were so behind Adkins up to his sacking, to air brush all he did for us out of their minds, and are now swearing allegiance forever to Cortese just sickens me. Time will be the deciding factor on the actions of Cortese, but our club lost something valuable in the way it happened, and I for one will not blindly accept it.
Bermondsey boy wrote:Not ridiculous at all, how will standing up as you call it, get Nigel Adkins back? What did I say that was untrue? You and a few seem to have taken it badly, OK that's your choice, but you still have to accept what has happened, as it will never be reversed, your "stabbed in the back" expression is based on what exactly? Any proof that you have would be more than welcome on here because no one knows for sure how it was carried out.
OSPREYSAINT wrote:What a rediculous response from osprey. If supporting the man who stabbed one of our best managers in the back is "manning up" I will be happy to not be there. Real manning up is standing up to tyrants, not licking their boots.

Loyal supporter for the future of the Club, the only turncoats are the cowards that are running away because they cannot man up to change, or haven't any view of a possible brilliant future, you can chose to follow the bus, or jump off it and run away to Nottarf Krap where you will be welcomed with open arms to celebrate the future there if there is one.
Most of the guy's on here declaring their undying love for Dear Leader are the same ones that were declaring their undying love for Nigel Adkins only a short time ago.
Some of those probably had Le Tissiers name on their shirt or sang Benalli's name from the Archers end.
Some are probably old enough to have seen Lawrie Mac's boy's of 76 lift the FA Cup. (Jim Steele MoM).
Now today, you have become turncoats..... (very Italian)
Shame on you all.
Even if the saints win the champions league under his leadership, he is, and always will be, a schmuck.

How can anyone with humility say there is a right time to sack someone? I never met Hitler but know I don't like him and Tiss has drawn the same conclusion! The behaviour speaks volumes. This man is nothing but a bully! Adkins' sacking needs to be seen in the context of the programme sellers, the photographers, the ex pros, the parking charges, etc. The man is a grade A tosser!

However, the *manner* of the dismissal left a lot to be desired. Airbrushing NA from the programme was crass and ignorant.
