Premier League hopeful on goal-line technology
Goal-line technology could be introduced at Saints next season, with the Premier League remaining hopeful of implementing it in time for the start of the 2013/14 campaign.
FIFA's announcement yesterday that it will introduce the technology for the first time at this year's Confederations Cup will have little bearing on the Premier League's schedule for its use in this country.
Plans have been in place since last year when the Premier League met with the two currently-licensed GLT companies, Hampshire-based firm Hawk-Eye and their rival GoalRef, to install the system at top-flight matches.
That could be as early as next season after successful tests at last December's Club World Cup in Japan.
While the Premier League is unwilling to set down an exact date for the system's first use - a tendering process between the GLT companies is still to begin - there is a desire to have it ready by August.
"The Premier League has been a long-term advocate for goal-line technology," a statement from the Premier League read.
"We have held discussions with FIFA licensed providers with a view to introducing it as soon as is practically possible."
One of the delaying factors in introducing a new system could be over the decision of which company to employ.
While both Hawk-Eye and Goal-Ref were used at the Club World Cup their co-existence was in order to test each against the other.
It is understood the Premier League would look to agree a deal with only one of the companies.
FIFA granted licenses to both last year, which prompted the Premier League to begin talks, but it is reported up to two new companies could be given the green light by April.
That could yet muddy the waters further of a Premier League decision.
In yesterday's statement FIFA welcomed tenders from "the GLT providers currently in the licensing process" as it determines who will host the technology at the Confederations Cup and World Cup.
One of the reported companies close to gaining a license is 'Cairos'.
The Premier League has long attempted to develop goal-line technology after first meeting with the Hawk-Eye developers in 2006.
The debate for goal-line technology has gathered pace since and was highlighted by Frank Lampard's 'goal' that was not given at the last World Cup against Germany.

Also, "licence" is the noun and "license" is the verb. People who write for newspapers should really know this.

Why don't they say that we will use tv replays available and if the evidence is inconclusive we will go with the linesmans original decision (pretty much as you would go with an umpires decision in cricket) or alternatively, if it is inconclusive the goal cannot be given.....i suspect because such a common sense approach would deny FIFA the opportunity of a back hander from the technology providers...

Still, short of that, goal line technology would be some improvement.

I don't want it. I don't think it's worth tinkering with the fundamentals of game just for the 0.1% of games in which it would actually make a difference.
Also, "licence" is the noun and "license" is the verb. People who write for newspapers should really know this.
I can only think of a few times when this would have been any use .. mainly Lampards effort against the Hun a little while back. I have also seen a few howlers ,,,, but as you say very few .. in fact a lot less than 0.1%. Luckily it wasn't around in 1966 as I suspect the Evil Eye technology may have robbed young Geoff of his hat trick.
The costs will be passed on to season ticket holders so I suppose we should be careful what we wish for.

2968 games a year in the top 4 Divisions and how many times would this be used?
Would be far better off having technology that would help with offences that happens a dozen times in EVERY match!
So now a player could get fouled, Ref misses it, ball is played forward to a player who is offside,Lino misses it, hand ball, they both miss it, shot on goal that could have crossed the line and you can stop play to see if it did indeed cross the line, never mind about the 4 offences before the shot was even taken!
Mind you that's FIFA & UEFA for you.

Leeds United will be forced to bide their time before officially courting Nigel Adkins with the former Southampton manager still to agree the terms of his departure from St Mary's.
and
has yet to reach a settlement over his contract with Southampton, who sacked the 47-year-old last month.
Adkins, replaced by Argentinian Mauricio Pochettino, far right, is effectively on gardening leave and unable to negotiate with potential employers until his pay-off is finalised.

people often state that technology is used in other sports, and yes it is, however in cricket india don't like or trust hawkeye and American football has cut back on the amount of times replays can be used, replays/technology was used after nearly every on field decision, and a game which is already a lengthy affair was made too long for even the yanks. even after multiple replays for different umpires the decision was sometimes still wrong.
as stret has said, the game you watch on tv or at the ground is the same game you can play yourself and that is what is great about the beautiful game.

this is going to be the ruin of football. how soon after this is introduced will some managers start calling for technology to decide offsides, diving, penaltys? more and more technology will be asked for and if its there for 1 rule why not others!

I actually see the introduction as a good thing...the Lampard goal that wasn't should never happen again.
But....and it's a big but...I would like to see it tested for a trial period...and judged as to how it has affected the flow of the game.
I do agree that we need to steer clear of making football a stop/start game. Works for cricket and tennis..not for football.

Personally think it's been proved getting to, and the staying in the top flight is much more difficult and a greater achievement than winning a couple of games to get a bit of silverware.
27 years last time staying in the toughest competition in footy- something you'll never achieve.

I don't see the comparison with Rugby. I don't avidly follow the game, so can't be fully sure of its use, but for trys, the game is then dead and a video shows whether a try is scored or not. In football, the ball is still in play, and by stopping it to view a replay you may stop the chance of a rebound or counter-attack.
The problem if it then spreads to other areas of the game is that many of the laws are subjective, what I may view as reckless, others may not.

We were fortunate in that some of our posters on here an BBC 606 opened our eyes to what was happening with our own Club and we were at least able to influence the demise of Lowe and Co. Apart from the admiration that Markus Liebherr had for Saints fans we didn't have much influence in saving the Club, that was down purely to the vision of Markus and Nicola who saw something in our Club to take a gamble, and so far it has paid off big time despite the nasty minority who still snipe at every opportunity.

But that's the core difference at the end of the day.
They love that they won the league in the 40's, and a couple of cups including the 'soiled' FA cup of a couple years ago, but don't seem to mind the fact they've only spent a tiny amount of time actually in the big time of the top league in the last half century.
I personally don't care if we don't win any cups for another 20 years if we can stay that time in the Premier. Cups in the last 15-20 years don't mean much to most teams anyway...Being in, and remaining part of, the top flight is a much bigger challenge and achievement in my mind

If there was a goal up the other end in that time, would you then disallow that goal, or let both stand? Also, what if someone gets booked/injured in the time it takes to decide, would the bookings

I think this will turn into another "Golden Goal" situation - FIFA want to use it at the next World Cup. It will be a disaster, and throw up a cataclysm in response.
Don't get me wrong, I really hope it will put an end to dubious decisions and serious foul play, but I just can't see it going right.
