Lambert sets sights on another milestone

Rickie Lambert Rickie Lambert

Rickie Lambert is closing in on yet another major milestone in his career after breaking through the 100-goal barrier for Saints.

The striker brought up his ton in Sunday’s 4-2 defeat at Newcastle, becoming only the tenth player in the post-war era to reach that mark for the club.

But the records are not set to stop there, as Lambert is now just a few shy of completing a double century of career league goals.

Only two players currently appearing in the top four divisions of the English game have reached that landmark.

Lambert is now on 195 and on course to hit the target before the end of the season.

Among currently active players, only former Saint Kevin Phillips, 39, and Jamie Cureton, 37, have passed the 200 mark in league goals.

Phillips, on loan to Crystal Palace from Blackpool, has an incredible 244 league goals at an average of 0.43 per game.

Cureton, currently at Exeter City, has netted 224 league goals at an average of 0.35.

Lambert’s average is in between the pair at 0.39.

Lambert’s teammate, Morgan Schneiderlin, believes the forward is one of the best English strikers currently in the business.

“You have maybe Wayne Rooney who is on top of everyone, but after that Rickie is up there,” he said.

“I don’t really have to say anything. His stats and his performances speak for themselves.

“He’s an amazing player. He proved in every league he went that he can score goals, and he will score goals.”

But it is not just his ability to put the ball in the net that sets him apart, according to Schneiderlin.

He insists that Lambert’s game is about far more than just his predatory instincts.

“He can keep the ball, he gives you time to breathe, he’s a very good player,” said the French midfielder.

“Out of my four goals I’ve scored this year, he’s passed me three times the ball.

“He is someone who has great vision as well.”

Schneiderlin revealed he cannot understand why Lambert has not yet received international recognition from his country.

The 31-year-old’s 12 goals this season, in his first Premier League campaign, make him the top English scorer in the division.

Schneiderlin said: “I really hope that he’s going to get what he deserves, which is an England call-up.

“Seriously, I don’t know what they’re waiting for to call him up.

“He has scored 12 goals and I’m sure he will score even more.”

Lambert is also approaching the 500th league appearance of his career, with the visit to St James’ Park having marked number 496.

Assuming he remains fit and is not dropped by manager Mauricio Pochettino, he will hit 500 in the televised home match against Chelsea, on Sunday, March 31.

There will more to come from the Echo this week on this fascinating continuing run of Rickie stories.

According to my stats (okay I'm a bit of an anorak), Rickie is now on 9974 completed passes for Saints - and should hit 10,000 before half time on Saturday. He's also on 1988 headers - just 12 short of the magic 2000 and only 17 short of Beattie's total.

As if that's not enough, Rickie's been fouled 499 times and has fouled others 249 times and has shouted 'ouch' 99 times.

My dream is on Saturday he makes 25 quick passes and then runs whilst cheekily heading the ball 12 times to reach 2000, only to get fouled for the 500th time and then get booked for a retaliating foul (his 250th) and then to make his 10,000th pass to Adam who crosses the ball, which cannons into the goal off Rickie's balls and causes him to shout his 100th 'ouch'.

And to cap it all (currently 999,947) this would bring about 'arry's one millionth match-time twitch.

And by the way, I have now spent 555.555 (spooky number eh?) hours on here over the years which is one second short of two million seconds.

Tick - two million up!

Apologies for this post being 'off-thread', but it has been reported that Chelski have now stepped up their bid for Luke Shaw as a replacement for Ashley Cole.

A fee of £10 million has been offered with a view of loaning him back to us for at least one season.

What a player and another legendary number 7 for us.
Poopey's keyboard warriors(all 5 of them) like to bash him, just like with Le Tiss, but te jealousy is so transparent.
How they must wish to have had a player with half of either of those guys' ability and flair...
Can't wait for twitchy to come back.
Pretty soon he'll have finally been found out by the press to be what he is-vastly overrated and a crook.
Funny, the only people who still love are the skunts... Funny that, eh? Failure and crook-that'll explain it!
Here's to more and more years of being the highest ranked team in the South!!!

What is it we're supposed to be jealous of?
That you've got a team that's spent most of the last 50 seasons in the Championship(2nd Div) or lower?
That you had owners who willfully cheated the other 92 clubs in the land by bringing in a team of interntional players paid huge sums with money they never had?
That you've spent nearly as many years in admin as you have in the top flight in recent memory?
That the charities are still waiting for you to cough up?
That you've never had , even with your millions, a player as good as Le Tiss?
Things like that?

If you fund it, Warrens, I'll do a one-year PHD to prove 'big club bias'. It's not just the 'professionalism' of the big club players and managers, who seem psychologically programmed to dispute every decision that goes against them, it's the fans and the media, too. IMO, it's that collective pressure on officials which leads to the clear bias.

such a typically arrogant post from a skate with nothing left to do but try to detract from the rock and roll season we are having in the Premiership.

Your jealousy is showing through princess, not a nice thing to show.
All you could ever do was point at the history books and put forward an argument that this, somehow, made your club the better one. And then when all the stats you chose to ignore were presented you fell back on the 'Oh well I just know my club is better'. Which is a complete non-argument.

Nothing you can say will change the facts that Southampton are the bigger club with the a larger fan base. In fact I would say that it is quite apparent now that Portsmouth is not big enough to support a team playing in the Premier League. your success was only ever a flash in the pan and, ultimately, it destroyed your club.

As for your silly little claim above - well it depends if you want to include the Paint pot. I don't really care if you do or not. But what I will say is this - 28 of those years were spent in the top flight of English football. You conveniently ignore this as a measure of success because it doesn't fit in with your twisted little world view (or to put it another way, your jealous little brain can't deal with it)

you won't respond to me, you never do because deep down you know that Southampton are the bigger club and you hate it because there's nothing you can do about it.

such a typically arrogant post from a skate with nothing left to do but try to detract from the rock and roll season we are having in the Premiership.

Skates actually convince themselves that this 60 year old 'success' built even then off government assistance as it were is relevant today...

..moreover the cup victory bought at ridiculous cost to their club and their integrity is worth it...

...Were they once bigger, yes...did they once have a better pedigree, yes...

See as a Saint I can admit it.....

...now can a skate ever admit that in the true sense of the word they have been the smaller club viz a viz SFC for over 55 years apart from a handful of occassions...methink
s NO.

Stroppy, exactly what I've been saying over and over.
I've said year upon year, success in a cup that was bought, and in a year when the three other semi finalists where lower league sides..
Then, on top of that some success in the black and white post war mess, and nought else.
Getting into, and even more so, staying in, the top league is a much harder achievement than a freak cup run. They've been a lower league side than us for pretty much the whole of my 37 years, and will be for a long while to come.

This moron lives in his own little alternative world bubble. He obviously thinks Nottarf is a better ground than mighty St Marys. He obviously prefers to watch a team of has beens, failures and kids instead of watching international superstars every week. He obviously prefers history to current reality. He actually believes the blue very few are the bestest of all fans. He prefers to try to wind us up instead of getting his homework done. I find myself wondering does he prefer death to living? He obviously hates our infinitely superior club with a vengeance. That's ok. It's also ok for ants to hate elephants.

I think he is saying that we haven't picked up any silverware in 35 years, compared to the Skate haul of how many? I don't know and I don't care it isn't important, especially if wasn't achieved through fair means. He thinks we are jealous of not being the mighty Portsmouth FC. How quaint. No, I haven't a clue about the second line, it makes no sense at all to me. He thinks it is a shame that we are in the Premier League, but why that should concern him isn't clear, he predicts that we won't win anything in the future, well we will have to wait and see, I suspect we will have a better chance of some kind of successs than the failing Club down the other end of the M27, but you never know miracles do happen, as Markus Liebherr proved. I think we should continue to humour this poor sod as he has nothing going for him at all at the moment. MK Dons may be generous tonight!

FTBU will be smiling at having got so much thread-time today, but inside he will be burning up at the thought of the decline of his club. It's just an asset break up now. No buyers, just debt, and sad empty despairing fans mourning the impact of big money on the modern game.... oh yes and lots of wealthy lawyers slowly sucking the remaining blood from the corpse.

They are on the slippery slope to oblivion. Even FIFA 2014 (its in the game) probably wont have them on the team list.

League 2 next season, then the Conference and then back to Commercial houses Saturday morning leagues. by then it will be on the municipal pitches where the players put up the goalposts before the matches.

All that will be left will be pictures in a scrap book, references to the team that no longer exists. Interviews with ageing old boys who remember the days when you had to pay to see them play and not just turn up and stand on the touchline.

So yes - rejoice in the space we have wasted on you today. I wont bother tomorrow ... you are no more than dirt by the grave waiting to be shovelled into a very deep hole.

Those are very impressive stats. Congratulations on managing to log 555.555 hours to the absolute second. As you are obviously very good at figures and you also spend time wondering about the stars, galaxies and the universe etc. I was wondering if you are able to explain why the Skunts are moving away from us in footballing terms at greater than the speed of light. I was always under the impression this was not possible.
It's very hard to get sensible numbers from the skunt situation as all the starting figures are negative. You'd think that by adding together the combined speeds of the two clubs travelling in opposite directions they might add up to the speed of light. However you may have noticed there is no light emerging from Shatton Park. Indeed numerous debt collection agencies have described it as a 'black hole' ie money goes in but never comes out. Of course it can't be an actual black hole or by now even we would have been sucked into it instead of enjoying glorious prosperity and success.

I tend to think of Poopey as simply a dark matter in the general conversational sense as opposed to actual dark matter which appears to exist in the entire universe but which has not yet been found.

Scientific laws cannot be applied easily to them, but instead they fall into the general category of universal s0ds laws...

Aeroplane turbulence strength is always proportional to the temperature of the coffee; the slowest lane on the motorway is always the one you've just moved into; just when your cat has fallen asleep on your lap and looks wonderfully comfortable, you will need to get up for a pee.

Another way of thinking about Poopey is that just about everyone on here will have a box in their house which has got lots of keys in it. None of the keys fit anything and it's completely pointless having them - and yet, there they are.

such a typically arrogant post from a skate with nothing left to do but try to detract from the rock and roll season we are having in the Premiership. Your jealousy is showing through princess, not a nice thing to show. If it is fair play. However I think the fans will end up with 25% or less and the HNW's will own it - although I still think it's more like to go bust. You underestimate Channers each and every time and it always bites you.

Yes, I can understand why you feel so much pain, try taking something, there are plenty of pain killers on the market, but not too many, that could be dangerous. I will let you into a little secret, we are not actually bothered about winning silverware at the moment, it is not important, our first target is to survive in the Premier, so that we can build up to an odd trophy or two, but that would only be a bonus. I appreciate that your previous Trophy success (however it was obtained) is something to cling on to as oblivion strikes, but you should be giving your own team all the attention that you can give them, however futile. Not wasting your precious time on here annoying those that find you irksome. As for your Club being "owned" by your fans, I somehow think you are delusional about what it actually means, only time will tell if it will ever happen.

Can't stop laughing about that one!

FTBU says stop going on about the last 50 years then talks about trophies from 60 years ago!
Then he says they are the better team in the last 10 yrs . FACT!
But we've won one trophy and so have they and according to him trophies are all that matters!

HAHAHAHAHAHA. He's so busy trying to tailor the facts to suit himself that he drops himself in the sh1t!!

HAHAHAHAA. Comedy gold!

Rickie, as we all know, is top drawer with a great all round game. Let's just ensure we continue to show our appreciation for him while we have him, because the only negative about him is that he is 31 & not 21!

As for the Skunts, especially FTBU, there is a continual lack of self-awareness. We will just revel in their demise because they certainly put the boot in 4 years ago.

What goes around, comes around skunts!

I wont bother tomorrow ... you are no more than dirt by the grave waiting to be shovelled into a very deep hole.

such a typically arrogant post from a skate with nothing left to do but try to detract from the rock and roll season we are having in the Premiership. You conveniently ignore this as a measure of success because it doesn't fit in with your twisted little world view (or to put it another way, your jealous little brain can't deal with it) you won't respond to me, you never do because deep down you know that Southampton are the bigger club and you hate it because there's nothing you can do about it.
a heartfelt n very emotional response.

we have been t better team in t last decade. FACT

u lot should stop going on about t last 50 yrs. its boring

stop livin in the past

shame 4 u
I see you replied to me, well done.

But seriousy, is this the best you could manage? really?

So lets see then, the original post I responded to was you claiming that Saints hadn't won anything for 35 years and that this, somehow, meant that we as fans would be jealous of your club.

so I post a well reasoned response, pointing out that you are clearly only using some fact and figures to support your posts.

And your response is to, again, try to use only one fact to somehow show that your club is better.

you used to post some fairly well reasoned arguments, now you just post.... well nothing really. Because you have nothing to say.
