Schneiderlin signs new Saints deal

Morgan Schneiderlin Morgan Schneiderlin

Saints midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has signed a new contract at the club that runs until the summer of 2017.

The 23-year-old told the club's website: “I am a very happy man. To commit my future to Southampton is a big thing because this club has big ambitions – and I have big ambitions as well."

Schneiderlin joined Saints in 2008 from RC Strasbourg in a deal worth up to £1.2m.

The French player has made 185 appearances for the club, and is currently enjoying an impressive first season in the Premier League.

Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino added: "I am delighted that the club has been able to extend Morgan’s contract.

“During my short time with Southampton, Morgan has shown what a capable player he is and has demonstrated his potential to become one of the Premier League’s most complete midfielders."

how can it be ? the transfer window is closed ! All that is allowed at the moment are "informal" agreements between 3rd parties that would lead to a player not signing a new contract. But it does not take a rocket scientist to work out what it going on with JP and his "contract talks".He can walk away and his new club can thus afford to offer him a fantastic 2-4 year deal. The chatter I am hearing suggests the obvious is indeed about to unfold. A shame, I rate him highly. I would love him to stay but I don't think he will sign....

Great news on Spider. He's worth a fortune now (Around ten times the value of Skuntmouth) and I think he's getting forward more under MoPo so we can expect a few goals from him as well.Don't think there will be much news on Punch till we know where we will be next season. Be a shame for him to go for nothing but at least we've had value from him this season. He's had a very up and down career and he would be better of staying with us, but he's also a bit of a glory hunter and doesn't have the same team ethic that the rest of the side have.

Great news. The odd thing is, outside of Alsace, most French footy fans haven't heard of him; and the ones I've spoken to all reckon they have plenty of world class centre midfield players already.

It's the same with wine (No, French wine ISN'T necessarily better than all the others), it's the same with cheese (No, France isn't the only place in the world that makes good cheese) and it's the same with Spiderman (No, you don't have any centre mids who are better than Morgan). I've tried putting them right, but once a Frenchman gets an idea in his head, he's too stubborn to change his mind.

How long before he's eligible for England?

Strasbourg Saint says...

Songs? We need something French.

Either to the tune of:
1. Je t'aime (Of course you know it - Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin) or
2. Je regrette rein (Edith Piaf).

1. (as though you're as drunk as Gainsbourg always was)
La, la, la, la, laaaaa, la, la, la, la, laaaaa
La, la, la, la, laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
(same tune) Mor-GAN Schnei-der-LIN, Mor-GAN Schnei-der-LIN, Mor-GAN Schnei-der-LIN (etc.)

2. (with ridiculous Piafesque French accent)

Nooooooooooon, Spiderman,
Nooooooooooon, we love Spiderman,
(higher) Nooooooooon, Spiderman,
(higher still) Noooooooooooon, Spiderman.

Breathe ....... and again!

C'est très simple, non?

This is significant, firstly because he is an absolute foundation stone in the team. Secondly it shows that Cortese is on the ball and that the club is capable of keeping it's key players.

Now it makes me wonder why Puncheon hasn't been sorted out. I'm thinking Punch (or some greedy agents) may be asking for too much, he's valuable but not irreplaceable.

Anyway getting back to the story, Schneiderlin will see great success with this club. It was a good decision.

Not me I was on here when there was a period under NA in L1 and the Championship when Spider was contesting the place with Chaplow to play alongside Hammond. I said then that the gulf in class was huge and so it proved (in fairness to NA he ended up never leaving him out). Spider is real quality, first name on the team sheet, player of the season, and Saints legend in the making.
