Pochettino expects Ramirez stay

Daily Echo: Gaston Ramirez Gaston Ramirez

Mauricio Pochettino does not expect record signing Gaston Ramirez to leave Saints this summer and has denied yet making a bid for Roma's Pablo Osvaldo.

The Saints have spent big since returning to the Barclays Premier League and last year smashed their transfer record to recruit Ramirez from Bologna for upwards of £12m.

However, the Uruguay international struggled to fulfil expectations in his debut season and has been linked with a move away from St Mary's.

Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid have been mentioned as potential destinations, but manager Pochettino has no intention to sell him.

"He's happy with us and we are counting on him for next season," he told an Italian website.

"It's normal that a lot of clubs are interested in his quality, but we don't listen to transfer rumours. We are planning for next season with him on board."

Pochettino has so far made just one summer signing, brining in Lyon centre-back Dejan Lovren for £8.5m - a move which ended interest in Cagliari centre-back Davide Astori.

"Lots of names have been linked with Southampton, perhaps too many," he added. "Some of them have been invented, others not.

"We were after Astori, for example, but in the end we went for Lovren instead. He's a great player."

Pochettino also played down talk linking Saints with a move for Astori's Cagliari team-mate Radja Nainggolan, while he also dismissed speculation surrounding a move for Osvaldo.

The Roma striker played under the Argentinian at Espanyol and reports today suggested he rejected a £17m move to the south coast.

"Osvaldo is a great player," Pochettino said. "I worked with him at Espanyol so I know what he can do.

"We are aware of his situation at Roma, but we haven't made an offer.

"We have a clear idea of what our targets should be but the market is moving very slowly at the moment. We are working prudently to reinforce the squad."

Well as long as they continue the policy of not talking about transfers, we will never know.
And I think this is a good thing.

Makes me interested to know where the rumours about Osvaldo surfaced since Poch has said that no offer was made

Agent beating his gums again?

While the lack of firm signings is frustrating we need to get things in perspective.

We are way better off than we were going into last season because we now have the strengthened defence that everyone was rightly worried about.

I think most people at the start of last season were happy with the midfield and attack, but saw the glaring gaps in defence.

Since last summer, we have Boruc, Forren and Lovren, plus Clyne, Maya and Shaw will just get better.

Plus we have Cork back from injury since then and so defensively we are looking pretty good in depth bar cover at left and right back.

Having been evolving as a team so nicely through last season I think buying loads of players would be a mistake. J-Rod still needs to be in the picture, Mayuka probably and Puncheon, Ramirez, Davis and Lallana, who are all decent players, are far from guaranteed a place.

So I think we need very little else unless we lose someone, bar what MP is looking for - a winger option and a really high quality Rickie and, it seems, another central midfielder, though I don't think that's even essential, though it wouldn't do any harm if we have high aspirations.

In summary - we don't need to panic. I think we are already well placed for a potential top 10 finish and any other signings will just add to our depth.

Glad nobody is worrying as much about us losing players as recruiting, but surely our priority is not to lose what we've got first. That would be my worry.

Hope any new signings, whoever they are, don't rock the boat with team morale, one of the team's strengths over the last 3 seasons. Also wish Adam would bulk up a bit, perhaps he then would not be off injured quite so much.

Is Simon Peach now writing for the Echo fulltime ?
.
Does that mean we are going to get some "positive" articles about the Saints from the Echo now ?
.
And what have they done with the usual "anti-Saints" reporters, are they only allowed to write about "old ladies on mopeds going past a new Tesco store" ?

I just had a de ja vu moment I was reading this story on sky sports then turned to the echo and it is here word for word, who stole it off who now. Quite frankly I am not concerned about transfer activity. We have lots of time and it is about getting the right people in and why are so many people moaning about the kit. In the old stripes it looked like I worked in KFC when I wore it. I like the new kits

Let's face it guys, we're stuck with GR!
He's over rated, over priced and over here, and should be sold for whatever we can get, at least that will save on the wages bill.
MP omitted to say that GR's staying because no one else wants him!!
Shrewd buy by Nicola, along with JR and Gazza.

Something that occurred to me the other day was that while we clearly have a policy of saying nothing, it can have consequences.

Now, if you were an agent (aka scumbag) trying to build interest in a player then a pretty safe statement to make would be "Yeah, our guy's talking to Southampton" as you'd NEVER be pulled up for it.

Just a thought.

I also like to think that this season will see Gaston tearing up the league. He's had time to bed in and get over his injury so he'll start to show his flair.

I may be wrong but I hope not. The guy's got class and I hope he's going to show it this season.

SAINTS missed Gaston at the end of the season when he was suspended for his Red Card.

He is quality and will get better and better as he develops a robustness to the League.

He adds a different option - has frustrated fans with his set piece free kicks etc - but we are a better Team and squad with Gaston Ramirez.

Can understand a prudent cautious approach in the Transfer Market - but would love to get another Top Quality signing in Midfield so we could dominate this area of the game which would pay dividends especially Away from Home.

Ar the moment we will be banking a lot of money. We are destined for a lot of draws this Season unless we boost STRIKE.

Goals win Games - and we need more goals in this Team.

We will remain in the bottom half of the table without new quality signings. we currently have a Team who can slog it out to avoid relegation.

MP's tenure and his reputation will be secured with his Summer Signings.

So far despite being a positive poster - the results (with business all supposed to be wrapped up by 01 July) have been underwhelming.

MP may have fallen into a similar trap to Nigel and in the pocket far too deeply with NC.

Ultimately it may cost him his job this Season.

WE ARE THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON.
