Boruc closing in on club record

Chelsea’s Petr Cech is the only Premier League goalkeeper to have enjoyed a better individual season than Saints stopper Artur Boruc.

Boruc took his personal number of clean sheets this term to 14 when he helped blank Swansea in last weekend’s 1-0 win at the Liberty Stadium.

That ties the Premier League record for a Saints keeper, with another one against Manchester United this Sunday meaning he would pass the mark set by Paul Jones in 2000/01.

Only Cech and Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny, each with 16, have kept more clean sheets this season.

And, when it comes to minutes per goal conceded, Boruc is bettered only by Chelsea’s number one.

Cech is streets ahead of the rest of his colleagues in that department, being beaten once every 127.5 minutes on average.

Boruc, on 99.52, is the only other keeper whose average stands above 90 minutes.

A significant proportion of the credit for that is also owed to the players in front of the 34-year-old, but the statistics are testament to the fine individual campaign he has produced.

When Boruc has not played, Saints’ defensive record has been significantly diminished.

In contrast to him, Paulo Gazzaniga has conceded once every 44.13 minutes on average when he has played this season.

However, despite the statistics, Boruc has not always escaped criticism.

Notably, he committed a high-profile error in the 2-0 defeat at Arsenal, while he also conceded a freak goal to Stoke keeper Asmir Begovic.

There have been other mistakes too, but, for the most part, the Polish international, who joined the club on a free transfer in September 2012, has proved a safe pair of hands.

Boruc is tied to St Mary’s until the end of next season, having signed a two-year deal last April.

His statistical performance this season puts him ahead of the likes of Manchester City’s Joe Hart, who has conceded once every 87 minutes on average, Everton’s Tim Howard and Manchester United’s David de Gea.

He'd be number one but for a couple of moments of madness and that freak goal at Stoke.

Another saint's prem record could be broken, just shows what a great season its been. If AB wasn't injured he might have past the record already.
Only beaten by cech at chelski, which isn't bad when you compare the cost of putting the back 4's together. Luiz cost more than double our back 4 on his own! The rest of their back 4 cost over £7mill each (Cole 5mill + gallas + 600k in fines and a lot of hassle). Dejan is our most expensive followed by clyne and thats only £10mill for the pair.
Fantastic season, well done AB.

Do you think it would be this high if he hadn't got injured? That came during a tough run of fixtures. He might have conceded a few more then. Or he could have kept more clean sheets and we'd be higher up the table. The great 'What if?" of the season.

Also full marks to the 4 defenders in front of him. Cannot remember the last time AB made world class saves for us like he was doing at the beginning of the season. Well done to the whole team.

Hehe. Yeah, some people downvote for small reasons. I just thought it was worth mentioning. We could have picked up points where we didn't with him in goal, or he'd have conceded a few more and he'd be lower down the goalkeeper's league table. We'll never know. Anyway, it's been a great season and I'm just glad to have Boruc back between the sticks.

I remember him arriving. I hadn't heard of him before that but a mate of mine living in Jockland emailed me to say we had got ourselves a bargain and a first class but eccentric stopper. Borat has certainly lived up to that. Just wish he was ten years younger. Best Polak in Southampton as far as I'm concerned.

We will still need to bring in another GK, at least as good, if not better than Artur. Kelvin must be past his sell by date and Gazza isn't the finished article, needs more game time, even at a lower level.

Agreed - Borat needs someone to keep him under pressure.
Just a thought - would Ruddy or Marshall be avail now they've gone down?
Schmeikel may be available and there are a couple of world-class keepers avail for free at the end of the season. An embarrassment of riches!
