Steven Davis will be a “massive miss” for Northern Ireland in their Euro 2016 qualifier against Romania tomorrow, admits fellow midfielder Niall McGinn.

Saints ace Davis, who captains his country, is missing the trip to Bucharest after suffering a hamstring injury in last Saturday’s 2-0 win against Leicester.

The 29-year-old had been desperate to play, in order to help Group F leaders Northern Ireland try to earn a fourth consecutive win to start their qualifying campaign, but was ruled out after being assessed by club and country.

Michael O’Neill’s side, who have a two-point lead over second-placed Romania, will hope to at least maintain their advantage, as they bid to reach a first major finals since the 1986 World Cup, but McGinn concedes it will be hard without Davis.

“No-one does more than Davo.” Said McGinn.

“He’s our captain, he’s definitely our leader on the pitch and he’s done so well for us for a number of years.

“He came into the team hotel on Tuesday because he’s been with his club having scans.

“He was just chilling and taking it easy, but there’s no doubt he’ll be hugely disappointed not to have made it.

“It’s a massive miss for us, but there are other players who come in and do a good job.

“He brings so much with his performances alone and he helps bring up everyone else around him to those standards.”
