MANGER Ronald Koeman reiterated that it is too early to start discussions about a extension to his contract, but during last night’s fans’ forum he confessed that he is happy at Saints and has big ambitions.

Koeman broached a number of topics from questions at the forum, which saw 500 Saints fans pack-out the Mike Channon Suite at St Mary’s.

The Dutch manager admitted that his most difficult challenge as a player was marking AC Milan legend George Weah in reply to one of the more light-hearted questions, but also took on the subject of a contract extension.

“Be happy, as I am now,” he said, when asked what it would take him to sign a new deal.

“That means that to work with a great club, to work with good people, to develop the team and still to have the belief between the technical staff and the players to go on.

“That’s the keyword, to continue or not. But it is my second season, we have time, we have time to think about it.

“It’s too early to make decisions about that and the ambition is to continue and even make it better in how we play and get results and try to achieve what we did last year and the ambition is to win a title.

“It is difficult we know, but if Aston Villa can play the FA Cup final, why Southampton not? That will be great and we will fight for that.”

Answering ranging questions, Koeman later remarked with a wry smile that his favourite manager to come up against was Jose Mourinho “because he still not winning against us”.

Koeman also spoke about transfers, talking about his experiences on players moving for money.

“It has to be the football reason and not the money reason and to try and take that opportunity at the right time,” he said.

“I’ve experienced, with a lot of young players from Holland when they go too early, they are still not prepared on that level.

“That’s difficult because that’s always a fight between the agent and your career. Not always what is best for your pockets.”

When Koeman arrived last summer, the club was haemorrhaging key-players, and the boss stated how important captain Jose Fonte was to building a new foundation for a team.

“No, he was important,” Koeman said. “Because I came to the club and I feel at that time difficulties because we had to sell a lot of players.

“I think the one good thing what we did was with Jose, but also with Kelvin (Davis), with Steven Davis, was inform the players about the strategy of the club, about the way we like to play.

“For sure to say to them, we will keep quality, we will bring in good new players, and of course then you have to wait.

“But from that start, that pre-season in my first year, I think it was difficult but these players is important players, we show ambition to the rest of the squad. That was important and little by little we did well, we had good results.

“The new signings showed the qualities and everybody was happy.”
