MAARTEN Stekelenburg admits he owes a lot to Ronald Koeman for revitalising his career and is open to ideas regarding his future at Saints.

The Dutch international goalkeeper is on a season-long loan from Championship side Fulham, providing cover for the injured Fraser Forster who returned to full training yesterday following a lengthy lay-off.

The 33-year-old has made 21 appearances this season, keeping eight clean-sheets for Saints, and has re-established himself in the Netherlands team after a difficult spell at the Cottagers.

Stekelenburg, after losing his way at Craven Cottage, is just happy to be playing.

He is also open to ideas regarding the next stage of his career.

“I don’t know yet,” he said. “I’m just happy about the chance they gave me here to play games and I know why they brought me on board here.

“Fraser is injured and we have to wait and see what happens. As long as I will be playing, I will be giving 100 per cent for the club and we’ll see what happens.”

He added: “I’m open for anything. It doesn’t only depend on me. It depends on the club as well.

“I had some bad luck as well in the last couple of years with coaches who got fired and new ones came in.

“The new ones came in and we weren’t the closest.

“That happens in football and I’m happy for the chance they gave me because I know Ronald (Koeman) from the start of my career.

“I’m just happy for the chance he gave me and I know why they brought me on board because Fraser was injured.

“I’m very pleased because I played most of the games so far, just not happy with the toe injury. But that’s part of football.

“I’m fit again and hopefully I’ll start this weekend and keep playing and we’ll see what happens.”

Stekelenburg is now fit again after a toe injury kept him out for two games, but has been impressed by his deputy Paulo Gazzaniga.

The young Argentine stepped in as cover for defeats to Crystal Palace and Tottenham.

“Well if you see him as I do in training he’s doing very well and in the games he played he did very well,” he said.

“It’s always difficult when you’re not playing a lot. He played a few games for the under-21s. He did well there as well so of course it’s difficult for him.

“That’s the position you’re in as a goalkeeper. Only one can be playing.”
