Jason Euell has had a big impact, says Jan Poortvliet

6:50am Thursday 13th November 2008

Jan Poortvliet has praised the impact of Jason Euell on some of his young stars.

One of the club’s highest wage earners, Euell only returned to the Saints ranks last month after a nasty shoulder injury sustained playing for the reserves.

He made an immediate impact with an impressive display against Coventry but missed the Preston game through a hip injury.

Euell was fit enough to come off the bench against Bristol City last weekend and made an impressive difference, even if he did squander a good chance to bag an equaliser.

Euell has now cemented himself at the forefront of Poortvliet’s mind and the head coach has been impressed by the way the presence of his experienced pro helps his young guns.

He said: “What Jason always brings is some energy in the game – he is an energy player.

“For that reason, even for all the good football players, you need someone who gives you the energy.

“He came on against Bristol City and it was important when he did that for the energy level.

“Directly when he came on the game was quicker, we had more power in the midfield and the young players played easier at that time.

“He did a good job and the game against Coventry he showed that he is useful for us.

“He is a good player and he will be part of the team now.

“He can make it easier for players like Romain Gasmi, Morgan Schneiderlin and Andrew Surman.”

You need to consult someone mate about this deep seated paranoia before it does you in. Do you take angry pills?

If you ever get to SMS agin, be careful when you go for your half time refreshment because every one of the catering staff have been hand picked by Lowe. They are plants.

Keep hearing from your (very small now) mob, that what we want is more experience in the team. When we have an article talking about an experienced player getting back into the team what do you do - slag off Lowe.

If we win the next ten matches you will still be there slagging off Lowe.

Make the most of it because you are constantly being overtaken by real supporters coming onto this site to talk about football and the team. They have no interest in your your childish dummy throwing antics. Waste of space fits the bill.

How depressing, yet another revelation for JP which amounts to the ******** obvious to everyone else! ie. strong experienced players are more useful than physically weaker inexperienced players. It's about getting the right mix and intimidating the opposition with bskill and power. So let's select a big target man and have two strikers next time as well, please

I have refrained from commenting on the situation at St Marys for some weeks. Fifteen quid for Notts Forest or, indeed, any other visiting side won't persuade me to go. The product on offer simply isn't attractive enough. Never mind that what Lowe & Wilde are trying to achieve might take time, never mind Poortlivet fast-tracking the youngsters - the truth is that I and many other stay-away previous Saints season ticket holders and supporters have lost interest and faith in the direction the club is going. If Saints are relegated then next year's season ticket renewals will collapse. The current and previous financial and managerial experiments under Rupert Lowe patently haven't worked and now he is able to introduce his long-held dream of operating like Ajax however, it's too late and we are in the wrong league. This is not Holland although Southampton certainly seems like a footballing lowland these days. Theories about Lowe's interference in team matters might have some basis in terms of weak managers being appointed and perhaps some elements of the media are pro-Rupert but, they are irrelevant. Saints as a football club is slowly sinking into oblivion but the demise started immediately after the FA Cup final and is now chronic with no forseeable remedy.

Hey Part-time Orange.
"The product on offer simply isn`t attractive enough"
What utter carp.
Anyone who has watched Saints this season will agree that we have seen some great football, in fact we have played more football in one match than in the last ten years.
I think you and others need to decide if you are fans or not.
I would suggest you get along to SMS and support the lads, at least they are giving their all.
As a club together with Watford, Norwich, Palace etc we are cash strapped, you spend £15 along with 10,000 others and we might just see an upturn in our fortunes. All the time you stay away it is just another nail in the coffin.
I will be there in DIV 1, will you?
I bet you went to Cardiff.

It could be easy to conceive some peoples comments on here as very arrogant or indeed very self important so much so that no one else's views count. Yes fewer and fewer "stay away fans" appear to be adding comments on to threads like this, but don't be mistaken to think that is because their opinions have been disproven or because they have seen the light and come round to the "true fans" way of thinking. To say that the stay away fans are becoming a minority........then maybe it would be good to point out that the stay away fans are not the minority in real life.
Based on the recent gates of around 14,000, out of this 9000 or so are season ticket holders + 4000 or so on the day fans would give 13,000 "true fans" give or take (allowing 1000 or so away fans that are included in the official gate receipts) then for a stadium that can hold 32,500 I would say that the stay away fans do out number the "true fans".
Maybe the stay away fans are staying off of these threads because they have other priorities in their life, work, family etc.
Maybe they have already concluded that the division amongst the fans is too wide to bridge or to even enter into reasonable debate without getting personal.
Either way it would be better to use threads like these to discuss the positives at SFC.........but maybe as that discussion would be short lived people do resort to talking about the current situation at SFC. Regardless of what side of the fence you are on it is clear to see that the divided fans do have a passion for SFC just different beliefs on what is best, long term, for SFC.
I don't understand why SFC couldn't or didn't get any new investment when we were in the Premiership, FA Cup finalist, European Football guaranteed, New Ground, Great Academy, Great Training Facilities, yet the Skates who are in a similar position now, as to what we were then with the acceptation that they need a new stadium and training facility but look to be getting bought by a new investor.......why wasn't SFC such a better alternative for investment back in 2003/2004???? Because of the board??? How could it be. They gave too much business acumen and long term planning for them to be the issue.

Lets face it,this is a non-story.Hopefully Euell will stay for the season and help the kids. The end.
More importantly, what we`re witnessing at this present time is our club on a downward slide ,in terms of results over the last 3 or so years.
Its very simple.YOU WIN GAMES AND EVERYONE IS HAPPY AND THE ST MARYS IS FULL.
YOU LOSE GAMES AND PEOPLE LOOK FOR A REASON OR SOMEONE TO BLAME.
Its natural that in these situations you will lose a lot of supporters.
People get fed up paying good money to watch a team lose a hell of a lot more home matches than they win.
People like myself and the likes of Derek,Kate and many other regular posters on this site will stick with it.
If blind loyalty in dark times makes me naive or stupid or both ,then i`ll have to live with that.
All i know is im looking forward to the Wolves game and hoping the lads will do the business. If they dont,i`ll be disappointed and critical of players performances ,Jans decision making, but ultimately i`ll get over it.THIS IS JUST A GAME OF FOOTBALL.NOBODY DIED.Believe it or not watching Saints is a pleasant distraction from the difficult realities myself and many others face in our lives.JUST ENJOY THE RIDE,THIS ISNT THAT IMPORTANT!!!

the third hardest man, although I agree somewhat with your posting, may I mention Norwich. This because it is comparable with the Saints in size and strength, also they were relegated from the premiership at the same time as us.
Now Norwich, although only a couple of points above us in the league at this point and are calling for Delia to resign from the Board(even though she has put in £12M of her own money to keep Norwich solvent). They also want a Billionaire to take the club over and ask why other clubs, but not Norwich.
They have 22000 season ticket holders and have near full gates every game.
Yet the fans on local radio phone ins, keep asking WHY have they so many 'loan' journeymen playing in their team. Many have even stated that the would rather watch their youth playing in their team and have mentioned the Saints as the way ahead.
So the question of; Soton people are not going to matches because they are fed up with the team losing does not really answer any questions.
Could it be that Soton have more 'glory' hunters than other teams? and only go when we are winning so that they can say to supporters of other teams, we are better than you.
Sainthog7, states he has been a supporter for 50years, I have been one for 63years and although over 70years old still visit the home games at the SMS. The comments posted on here tend to all rotate around Lowe /Wilde's awful handling of the finances. There are a few bright spots when someone actually makes a positive point instead of trying through insinuation and rhetoric to blacken Lowe further. You don't have to do that I think you'll find that he is already regarded in the football hierarchy as slightly unusual and to be tolerated but not listened too. He tried the Clive Woodward experiment Harry saw him off perhaps the only thing we Saints fans have to thank him for. Enough about Lowe.
Try to keep it positive lets try to keep our team feeling good about themselves. Let's face it thats all JP is trying to do get good stories about your players in the press make them feel wanted. I've seen Euell play some real howlers in the past could this be revelation I do hope so!

Derek, last week you asked everyone to just stick to making comments about football and to stop getting involved in these ever so tedious petty squabbles, that are for ever taking over this forum.

Well here we are, another week and yet again Derek is picking yet another fight with some other poster, and has the audacity to ask if the other guy is taking "angry pills".

I asked you last week to practice what you preach, and stick to football only comments, so why not give it a try?

What is your opinion on the lack of experienced players in the squad and the team?
Is it your opinion that the team's chances of staving off relegation would be better with a greater number of experienced players or do you think JP should ignore experience and keep on playing the kids?

Oh and by the way, the guy you criticised had not even mentioned Lowe's name in the post you responded to, in what appears to be an angry and maybe even paranoid way!!
Are you taking angry pills?

Sainthog. You people always write about what if's. The point is Euell is here, he is a Saint, and he is available. I see this only as a benefit and will only help the kids.

You are also so quick to let us know about all the fans who are staying away because of Lowe - you cannot support this any more than I can deny it. You talk to a few people, read a bit from disgruntled people on websites and in papers, and then make a decision. Lets not take into account the cost of tickets, the credit crunch, the fact we are no longer in the top flight and the standard of football we are now witnessing. Think you might find this accounts for a few seats each week. I believe you when you say you would still not support Lowe if we won 10 on the trot, I wonder though if you might find your way back to SMS. I can guarantee I would have to stand in a much bigger queue to get my drink at half time if we did though.

SUE Thanks for your message and of course I will continue to fly the flag because I am a SUPPORTER. THIRD HARDEST MAN - Yet again pal, good points well made

SATELLITE

Yet more brilliant comments made by a man, not only with passion and red and white in his veins, but also the common sense to see things the way they really are.

In conclusion - Anyone who watched the Arsenal BOYS dish out a footballing lesson the other night would do well to examine what they say in future about our boys and our tactics. The Arsenal kids were absolutely first class, and several interviews the next day (with professionals) on radio talked about how young they were and how much the Dutch 'total football' influence has a bearing on their game.

Contrary to the belif of some, I do try not to make it personal, and have always advocated that this site should be used by any Saints fan with a view, who wants to get involved in a reasoned debate with other supporters of our great club. You`re right about the support Norwich get, compared to ours.I dont know if it`s because we have lost so many home matches and maybe Norwich win more at home thus keeping their supporters happy, i dont know?
Also as much as the Norwich complain about Delia Smith,i cant imagine that she is as unpopular as Rupert Lowe.
I just feel a lot of fans use Lowe as an excuse not to go because we`re basically we`re pretty poor at the moment, and as much as i dont want to believe it but maybe a lot of our fans are glory hunters.Maybe its because Norwich, for all their loan signings and poor results have still gone out and signed players and a bigger name manager than us.This doesn`t guarantee wins but it gives the fans more hope perhaps?

I don't think it logical, sensible or even realistic to compare out youngsters to those of Arsenal!!!!!!!!
For a Start the Arsenal youngsters have been bought on by a top rated, talented manager and training staff.
Secondly, they were all gradually integrated into the team, not all dumped in together at the same time and told to perform. They had experienced players around them to help them.
Lastly, the fact that the Arsenal youngsters are playing in the Prem would presumably suggest they have alot more talent and potential than our youngsters.
That said, given the task they have been handed I applaude our youngsters for having the bottle to even give it a go and furthermore come what may at the end of the season they should be proud of themselves.
Maybe the Norwich fans want their team to be full on home grown talent because maybe Norwich FC's charter and long term plan is different to that of SFC's???? Maybe they wouldn't sell off their talented players or if they did only one or two that they could get big money for.
Saying that if we had someone on the board who would put in £1.2 Million of their own money into SFC I'd be happy let alone £12M.

Im pretty much in agreement with the people on here who enjoy the quality of football we`re playing compared to last season. The problem is,i believe is we have a makeshift defence, which was our main problem last season. We let in too many goals.I really hope Jan makes it more of a priority to try and establish a settled defence with proper full backs and at least 1 older head in the middle. Its important to protect the younger players as they learn, and then we`ll get the best out of them.

Lowes Nemesis - what an interesting and worthwhile response. I am sure that all users of this site really welcomed your well thought out and reasoned views. Well done.

Perhaps you should read the Help The Saints post. He has responded to my article, and although he disagrees in part with what I have to say, he does give clear and valid reasons for disagreeing with me. This is what we refer to as a difference of opinion. Nothing wrong with that, and gives people like him and me the chance to openly debate a subject close to both our hearts. That is what the site is all about.

Going back to Help The Saints - I was not really comparing the Arsenal kids with ours, and I realise to do so would be silly, because they are heads and shoulders above most of our kids. My point was that in one of the toughest Leagues in the world, a bunch of pretty much untried youngsters were put out against seasond campaigners and did a remarkable job. Therefore, it is possible for us to do the same in a League where the standard is much lower. You are quite correct also that they did have experience around them and we also would need some experience for our kids to play alongside. Unfortunately at the moment we are not over endowed with these good experienced players, and have to say I cannot think where they may come from.

The other point I was making was as a response to someone who had earlier condemned us out of hand for trying to play total football the Dutch way, saying it won't work over here. The morning after that game, every time I turned on the radio I was hearing how much Dutch influence was attributed to the way the Arsenal lads played the game. These comment were from very well respected professionals in the game, and I kinda think I would like to accept their input more than the one from the earlier poster.

It cannot happen over night, and it will take a lot of working on the idea, and getting the mix right with a blend of youth and experience, but it can be done.

All I will add is that I have sometimes been spellbound by the standard and the excitemnet generated by these talented youngsters, and given the choice of watching these kids and the overpaid underachieving Hoofers of last season - there is no contest.

Keep it up kids, there are a lot of fans who are enjoying what you do (even though we are not going to win loads of games yet)and will turn up each week to support your efforts.
