Alex Pearce took his Saints tally to two goals in three games and believes the team are on the right track.

The 19-year-old centre half on loan from Reading has already become Saints’ joint third leading Championship scorer this season thanks to two headed goals from corners.

The first, on his debut, started off the amazing fightback at Preston and the second came on Saturday as Saints slipped to a 2-1 defeat to Wolves at St Mary’s.

Before joining Saints, Pearce had only scored once in 42 Football League appearances!

Saints did show plenty of fighting spirit to battle on with ten men in the second half.

And Pearce has taken encouragement from that, as well as his goal.

He said: “I try to do my best in the opposition box and I just got my head on it and luckily it went in.

“Then we just had to keep plugging away and Bradley came close when he hit the post.

“We got another couple of good chances but it just didn’t fall for us.

“On the second half performance though, with ten men, we definitely deserved a point.

“If we keep playing like that then we'll be all right.

“It’s massively important that we try and turn our home form round and keep the fans happy.

“We’ll do our best to do that.

“We’re all learning and progressing well and the way we played gives us all encouragement.

“It’s a fantastic achievement but we just need to work on not giving stupid goals away and make sure we finish our chances.”
