Alan Pardew has insisted Adam Lallana will not be sold before the transfer window closes.
The 21-year-old put in his best performance of the season on Tuesday night and scored a great goal as Saints went out of the Carling Cup 2-1 against Premier League side Birmingham at St Mary’s.
Lallana recaptured his form of the first half of last season that saw him receive a call-up to the England under-21 squad before he tailed away after Christmas.
Lallana has been the subject of transfer speculation throughout the summer with talk that top-flight sides such as Wolves and Stoke have been eyeing a move for his services.
His performance on Tuesday only underlined why any watching scouts would be tempted to recommend a move for him before the transfer window closes on September 1.
But Pardew says Saints are in a position where they can pick and choose who they sell and when and that Lallana is a player who quite simply is not for sale.
When asked whether he thought there was a chance of a bid for Lallana, Pardew said: “There might be but they ain’t going to get him.
“There’s no point in trying.
“We can put up the ‘not for sale’ sign here and that’s the beauty of it."
