Southampton facing fixture pile-up in coming weeks

Saints face fixture nightmare Saints face fixture nightmare

SAINTS’ play-off dream is in danger of being derailed as the club embark on a gruelling period that could see them face seven consecutive midweek matches.

The fixture list chaos begins this weekend when, after visiting Millwall, Saints may have to endure nearly two months of playing without a break between Saturdays. They are already guaranteed to play a minimum of five midweek games in that period.

Click below to see a video of today's headlines in sixty seconds

But, with a rearranged date for the visit of Swindon still to be set and the potential of an FA Cup replay with Ipswich, it could become a horrific set of fixtures.

The congestion has arisen largely because of their FA Cup run, which has necessitated new dates for the Brentford and Swindon league games.

Their path to the southern area final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy has also meant a further two midweek clashes appearing on the schedule, against MK Dons, and the postponement of Saturday’s match against Huddersfield further exacerbated the situation.

Football League rules state that any postponed fixtures must be played at the “earliest reasonable opportunity”.

How negative can an article be? So we face 5 midweek games in 7 weeks with slight potential of more. They've had a decent 2 week rest and plenty of transfer funds to bolster the squad this window. Remember this is what we've been playing for - success in all competitions we enter. I' d hardly say our promotion push is set to be 'derailed'. Just look at the amount of games burnley played last year with a tiny squad.

Two games a week and it's going to be fantastic. I'm as keen as mustard. The team is very much up to it with a variety of versatile players capable of covering different positions when needed. Though RB is required.
Sheer quality coming in now in several positions so we can rest some players for the mid week game. Touring rugby teams used to be limited to 25 and many players played every game on a three month tour..

Good cover at GK with Davis / Bart
Back cover short but James/Perry and Murty (when fit) on left and Harding and Mills (if he had too) on the left will manage fine.
CBs with Jaidi Fonte Ward Perry Lancashire and Martin.. take your pick..
Mid: Schneiderlin, Danns, Stock, Gobern
Wings: Antonio Waigo Lallana Holmes (James and Mills capable)
Sk: Lambert Connolly Paterson Waigo & Lallana capable in and around the box

Some above yet to confirm but more signings are assured all will be in the right direction.

It's Nicola's vision to buy the club and drive it in a business like fashion to the premiership that is force and source of the quest we're on.

With Markus backing him whole heartedly and seemingly quite happy to let Nicola get on with the job (No doubt a sound results based relationship as well as friendship).

Pards at the sharp end is doing a fantastic job, has many experts complimenting him on his forthright honest style and he's getting it done in every department.

This one of the most exciting times in SFC's history.

Are we up for it lads and lasses?
You bet your life we are!

COYR Up The Saints

What is it about professional footballers? They love playing and surely playing is better than training!
OK the squad does look a bit thin and lacking real depth - but surely that's what is trying to be resolved now!
Every successful club plays more than one game a week esecially if in Cup competitions!
Gee-wizz I bet the players are really moaning about playing twice a week instead of training for seven days and then only having one game a week.

All I can think about is the amount of time I'm going to have to dedicate to my laptop/miles in a car over the next few weeks - still it's got to better than Eastenders!

Where's news of a press conferrence or medicals being done at SMS or Staplewood?

Come on Echo get on to it - rumours are we are trying to sign three players to my knowledge. Get in your cars and look for a story rather than stating the bleeding obvious!!!

I don't see what the problem is really. As somebody else mentioned, you only need to look at Burnley last year to see a lot of games can be a good thing not neccessarily a bad thing! Especially if we keep the good form going, it brings with it confidence and momentum which will be all the motivation and adrenaline the players need to keep performing.

COME ON THE SAINTS!!!!

After the Fonte signing, this surprises me a little. After signing Fonte, AP said he was trying to sign 2 more players....given the need for cover at RB, and a striker, plus the rumours of Danns/Stock in midfield, I am surprised he is looking at another centre back.

Unless, he was referring to permanent signings and there are a couple of loan deals in the offing?

Whilst Saint's fixtures have piled up it's not concerning me, Saint's have got a strong squad, and unlike other teams can rotate there team weekly and can also cope with suspensions and injuries so I don't think it will de-rail our play-off push one little bit, if anything it's a blessing that Saint's have had a 2 week rest because the players were looking very tired and jaded so it could in fact revitalise our season and really push them harder. AP still needs players in to make us stronger Saint's are ahead of schedule in terms of where the club was and is now so promotion or not will be a fantastic season, promotion would be nothing short of outstanding if it's achieved but we have plenty of games/points to give us the chance. well done AP and Saint's players continue the hard work and you will be richly rewarded?

Well don't read or pass comment on it then! Even with a strengthened squad, the number of fixtures and injuries we pick up will ultimately decide if we make the play-offs. If we play fringe players (like Wooton) against MK Dons and Ipswich, we could easilly find ourselves out of the 2 cup competitions but I don't feel this would necessarily help our league chances. To reach the play-offs from where we are now is a very tall order, but possible (14 wins and 4 draws needed from remaining 22 games to achieve 74 points).

That's even further than Gosport.
We'll have to make allowances for transport costs etc as well now.

Just a thought, but but those of you who come on here day after day just to criticise the Echo, can you answer the following question?
If you were operating a business and day after day someone entered your place of work for no other reason than to insult you, your work and your employees, would you allow it to continue or would you tell that person to p1ss off and never come back?
I believe it would be the latter of the two choices above.
If I was in control of this forum you guys would be history, not because I would be trying to stifle "freedom of speech" but simply because, in my opinion, the well being of my staff (ie the reporters) is far more important than your petty minded attitudes and comments.
As others have said. If you don't like the way the Echo reports, then find something more to your liking.
SW is tiny-safe, but I figure tiny-mind would be more apt for those idiots that continue to attack the Echo.
Apologies to those who only wish to read football comments but these guys are getting on my moobs.

This is fairly easy. There are several unoccupied beach huts. Woolston Paul can brick them together, Insides plastered, Puppy to provide the oven, whilst Harley scourers local supermarkets for jungle juice.
Or if there are to many of us, I know of a run down wooden shed just off Frogmore Road

I agree with you for the most part. I have the Echo delivered and l look forward to reading about the team, what is going on at St Mary's etc.

I look to the Echo to find out the inside story to educate fans such as myself.

I also enjoy reading the views of others on this forum, and have started contributing a little of late as well. I enjoy the banter.

However, what I do find frustrating is some of the lazy journalism we have started to see of late, perhaps because they have nothing left to print if they can't speak to AP or the players because of the ban. I think we can all work out that there are a lot of fixtures between now and the end of the season, I don't need an analysis of the number of games played in every season since the war to tell me that....it just seems a copy filling exercise to me.

And, if it is true that there will be a story speculating whether RL will be tempted by Newcastle, that is not based on any fact, is pure sepculation, and I am annoyed that it would have an unsettling effect on one of our key players.

Credit where credit is due, I enjoy most of what the Echo publishes, otherwise I wouldn't buy it or come onto the website, but I do think as a regular purchaser of the product, I have a right to voice an opinion about its quality, as long as it is fair and balanced?

As the Club are ultimately responsible for the unravelling of society in Southampton, I feel the only solution is to adjust the plans and add a large extension at Staplewood! 24 hr bar for the more "committed" fans and an on site pie emporium for those worried about their "5 a day" intake. A "Little Saint" creche for matchdays if it's your weekend/evening. For the most "committed" supporters I believe The Priory is still open! Have e-mailed ML and NC and will report back upon reply! Don't hold your breath though, unless you are Capt. Swing!

Just got back from seeing my Mum in Poole Hospital. She is eighty years young today!
Yesterday I should have been down the Ocean Terminal seeing her off on a half world cruise. She cashed in all her premium bonds and was realy looking forward to the trip of a lifetime.
Last thursday she slipped on ice whilst out shopping and tore a load of muscles.
Doctors have said that she cant go on the trip because she can barely walk. Bummer or what!!!
Not a total disaster because she was smart enough to take out insurance and should get most of her money back.
Only possitive to come out of it is that I,as a dutiful and loving son will go down to Highcliffe on friday and monday nights untill she is fully recovered.
That puts me geographicaly within a stones throw of SMS on a Saturday and Tuesday......MMMMMMM

Damned if they do, damned if they don't.
If they post a story based on rumour, they get criticised because they cannot substantiate their comments.
If they ignore the rumours or the obvious and fail to post anything they would get criticised for missing the boat or not caring.
With weather conditions being as they are, and no football to report on, I am happy to read speculative journalism, because I, like many others on these forums, am intelligent enough to realise what it is.
Would you guys prefer that the Echo ignore the obvious and report nothing, so you can complain at their lack of effort, or would you prefer they post stories based on rumour and speculation, which at least gives the supporters the opportunity to discuss the possibilities?
I generally enjoy reading the comments on here, because there are a lot of caring fans out there with wicked senses of humour, willing to share their feelings of excitement with other fans, so with that in mind, I would prefer something to read, than nothing, even if it is just staing the obvious or based on rumour.

Well said Costa, the neggy comments make me laugh tbh, if you dont like it dont post on here simple as, leave it to the posters who dont give a toss and just want to natter about Saints however the info is related, as Journalist of the year Suicide Cpt Swing stated last night what are we...stupid?!! I heard from a reliable source that Southampton will sign Brian Stock from Doncaster for £2 million and possibly Simon Gillett (who is on loan there at the moment).

Also Neil Danns is set to join his old Palace team mate Jose Fonte at St.Marys. Apparently he was having a medical there 2 days ago but obviously not. Still should be signing though.

Elliot Ward from Coventry is still a target. He is out of contract at the end of the season so he should be fairly cheap (somewhere in the region of £500k to £1mil)

Rumours about Chris Lines joining from Bristol Rovers have quietened down lately but I still wouldn;t rule out a move before the end of the transfer window. Or possibly in the summer

Lee Barnard is similar. There were rumours. You would think though that with Southend performing at mid table and Southampton now loaded and on the rise he would want to be involved. He is also out of contract in 6 months.

I heard from another rumours website that Wes Hoolahan is being chased as well.

Nathan Delfouneso keeps being mentioned about a loan move until the end of the season

That puts me geographicaly within a stones throw of SMS on a Saturday and Tuesday......MMMMMMM M...Wonder what I should do???? ;-) COYRAWAPMACHINE

After all its where the Echo are getting a lot of the storys from. I,m really dissapointed about games gettin postponed as I will be away for 5 weeks soo and will miss more games than I would have done normally Dan I'm coming to get you
Nail on the muvva-fookin head right there. Totally agree mate. Its a forum.where us fans can chat about our club and the demise of the one down the road.Think yourself lucky IM not the editor.I would be writing articles on sexy women being spotted at the football!!!!!!!!!
Now that I would read !!
Women at the football? Whatever next? ;-P
Lovelysaint for PM. Puppy, that doesn't stand for Pie Master
Tsk, watching football when we should really be at home doing the ironing............
LovelySaint...forget the ironing! As long as the perfect pie filling and pastry crust are finished and the not so little beauty is ready for the oven then I have no objection to you and other ladies attending the games! I'm a modern type but this is the sort of unravelling of society that needs to be guarded against! I, for one, will be monitoring this situation closely!
Fear not PS, my beef & ale pies are legendary, I've earned my place at beautiful SMS... .! Society will not be unravelled.....merel y fattened up
I can see an end of season bake off on the horizon! Baddesley Bill and Sluggers Mum does an "unrivalled" sausage and mash pie and my smoked haddock and cider number has raised a few compliments! I see it as a round robin tournament, with the top 2 going through to a two leg final! Watch out for my lamb shank pie as well cause that's a contender too! I shall rest easy knowing society is safe and the highest standards are being maintained! It's about time this site was returned to its intended purpose! I never doubted you for a second! Enjoy the games, because you are worth it!
i can do a mean corned beef hash....any good ?
