5:00pm Monday 1st February 2010 in Saints News
By Dan Kerins, Digital Editor
THE JANUARY transfer window has shut - with no last minute signings for Saints.
Young defender Ollie Lancashire returned to Grimsby for a second loan spell, but as predicted Pardew made no further additions to his squad following Saturday's signing of Jason Puncheon.
Saints had a busy transfer window thus far, with gaffer Alan Pardew bringing in five new faces.
The English transfer window slammed shut at 5pm GMT, and was a quiet one nationwide with the majority of deals being loans.
It is still possible for deals to be announced, provided the paperwork made it to FA HQ by the 5pm deadline.
Clubs can still loan players, although Pardew has previously said he has no intention of bringing anyone else to St. Mary's.

I suppose it should come as no real surprise that there are`nt any more transfer definite`s yet, considering AP and the squad are in Spain. Who would conduct the deal and sell the club in his absence? Of course he may have stayed behind to strike more deals, but, with Fonte now training with the squad, you would think he`d be there to work out formations.......... ...

Jermaine Beckford is in Southampton ready to sign terms, after expressing his desire to be part of the Saints 4–year Premier League plan. Saints are also trying to sign Nathan Tyson and Brian Stock. Neil Danns from Crystal Palace is certain to follow in Jose Fonte footsteps! Finally, according to a very reliable source within the Saints setup, they are talking to Rivaldo over an extroadinary 9 month deal worth £38, 000 per week! You heard it hear first!
I predicted the signing of Fonte & Seabourne!

A week or so before the Fonte rumour and subsequent signing surfaced, I was playing Fifa 2010 on the Wii and signed him up for Saints as he happened to be a transfer listed player. Spooky - anyway, in case there was anything in it, I just signed Zarate from Lazio. You heard it here first - did I make the Echo unlikely list?

Southampton are set to sign Leeds United Midfielder, Andy Robinson on a Free Transfer.
Fromer Swansea City Midfielder Robinson, has been a bit part player since his arrival and has requeseted a transfer away from the Yorkshire Club.
A Source close to the Club announced "Robbo has asked to leave, and Simon has agreed to it. At this stage of his career he wants to be playing games and Simon cannot guarantee that to him at the moment. Southampton and Tranmere have shown interest and I think his ideal move would be Southampton as they are a big club heading in the right direction".
With Hammond's injury, id say this was a nailed on cert!

And here’s the latest from Alan Pardew - on the official website. It’s good to know that he respects our intelligence. And interesting to note that the Echo didn’t think this particular observation was worth cutting and pasting onto their own website. Happy reading: "I think it is the way of society nowadays with the internet that information gets out, sometimes before even I know! It's amazing, we've not even made a decision and the other Club are quoting that we're bidding! "I'm not going to waste the time of our fans with information that is not sealed, and not fulfilled, until such time that it is, and then they will hear from me. Southampton are set to announce the signing of Midfielder Theo Janssen on loan from FC Twente. Janssen, 28, was involved in a drink drive incident in November 2009, which caused FC Twente to take immediate action and suspend his contract with the Club until January 2010. FC Twente president Joop Munsterman said at the time : "It is unacceptable for a professional footballer to drive in such a state. He put his own life in danger and that of others. A footballer must be aware that he is a model for the youth." Theo Janssen added: "I was extremely stupid. I drank to celebrate victory. I will never drink and drive again, I have damaged the reputation of the club and football. I am willing to do anything to repair the damage." Janssen is expected to join Southampton on loan until the end of the season. It is believed that Marek Saganowski will be heading in the opposite direction as part of the deal.

If AP has been given a finite budget, that value may exceed his budget given what he has already spent. I watched the highlights of Falkirk v Motherwell. Scott Arfield looked a real box to box player, with a touch of class, but would he cost more than AP may have left to spend? I think Danns or Arfield would have been I better option than Puncheon, but like any poster I am unaware of what information is not put in the public domain. So I don't offer that as a criticism of AP, unlike some other posters.
Danns was looking great yesterday, he looked like it was his swansong. CP need the cash, we got some, no-one else has. We will find out who has been bluffing soon enough, if we don't get anyone esle we can still say that we have strenghtened the most.

We have two smashing goalies
a good solid selection across the back four with choices for hack teams or passing teams.
The Front mid has variety with power, width and pace. Still no dominator/boss to help Deano but give Jason Puncheon a chance to show how he can beat players and create.. remembering that we now without doubt Jose will be backing up and lifting performances from all behind so the central mid can do their job.
Up front: what can we say except Rickie, Barney, Connors, Papa - cor!
46 league goals this season +15
can we double it?
I believe we are in the top six best team in this league but have let ourselves down at time.. banana skins, call it what you like but there are no chances left.
Bless this week of training to gice Pards Wilkie and Wally the chance to sort the first team out.
Exeter is a must win, then two cup games to bed in new players. Pards will know the fans will want the scalp of Pompey like nothing on Earth.. beat them well and he's a Saints hero for life! But we still have roads to Wembley and a few months of blissful football non of us ever thought possible.

A little off topic but has anyone else noticed you can buy tickets for the P*mpey game regardless of whether you are a season ticket holder now on the online ticket section of the main website. How has no one picked this up. As for the signings... we have too many already. This is like Pre-season number 3 already.

Administrators would only offload a loan deal if he was on really high wages. When you consider that he probably isnt to lose him now for no money and save about £6K a week is not worth the damage to the team. A CCC team is easier to sell than a League One outfit so goes without saying that Tevez888 is probably posting with wishful thinking rather than the awesome "inside knowledge" we all hope he has. Come on people. We have got the players in we need. Hammond to come back is all we need in midfield.

Some good comments tonight but SYP 2010 please lay off our team. 5 new players this month need time to settle/gel etc. Contrary to your opinion not every WHU fan thinks AP is an idiot. The new culture has not filted through to SMS not even after 7 home wins on the spin last sat,the exception was the Exeter game where the atmos was awesome. Having watched Saints for over 35 years this is the new dawn we have been waiting for folks and AP will take us to the promised land again.
Looks like one poster stands out in the 1% The window showed that players of the calibre of Fonte are prepared to put their careers on the line to say Saints and Alan Pardew are their fastest ticket to the Premiership. Most of the top players in the squad say it regularly. They want to play and learn under Alan Pardew and know Saints is upwardly mobile. No way would Wilky or Wally Downes work with someone who wasn't competent -they can have/have had clubs of their own. That says it all for me Nicola Cortese has us on Track with the right people. I was a bit surprised at signing Puncheon – we have lots of wide players and I don’t think he will play in midfield in a 442. He could play just off a lone striker – but Lallanna does that job well. Daft, however, for some to say that AP should have signed Danns instead of Puncheon/ Otsemobor – it takes three to tango – Saints, Palace and Danns. There is no evidence that it was either/or. If, as is reported, the Palace Administrator is keener to get the wages bill down rather than receive a transfer fee, it is certainly possible that a loan deal for Danns until the end of the season could still be on. You can certainly imagine Danns not wanting to commit to a transfer which could very well involve his dropping down a division for next season as well as this. I hope so as an additional attacking midfielder is the one remaining piece in the jigsaw. It is also of course just rank stupidity to be criticising new players already. I too am not sure about Otsemobor but let’s wait and see how he does. One of the things I liked about Pardew from the start was his signing specialised defenders – real full backs rather than the converted wingers and midfielders we have had for over three years; and good tall centre halves who can head the ball. Otsemobor is only the second real right back we have. I prefer Thomas to James in that position but neither are real full backs. And Thomas is getting on a bit and accident prone, as of course is Murty. Up until this Window, every single player that Pardew has brought in has improved the team, without exception. Those questioning his record have no basis in fact for their argument. The team were very poor on Saturday in the first half – in fact they only really stepped up a gear when Waigo came on. His joining up play was excellent and he created a threat in all parts of the pitch. He certainly outshone Barnard and surely is entitled to expect a run up front in a 442 – but I guess AP will have to keep faith with Barnard so as not to dent his confidence – an essential quality in a striker and he has missed a few good chances so is probably feeling a bit fragile. We just hoofed the ball in the first half, especially Mills and Wotton and even the centre halves who were otherwise very good. We played like a team of strangers, perhaps not surprising given the (too many?) changes. Schneiderlin was the only quality in midfield and linked beautifully with Waigo. I am really surprised we got as many as five new players in given the evident difficulty in selling on from an already bloated squad. Surely more will follow Lancashire out on Loan.

Where were these posters last season, when things were really bad, what with the Dutch experiment and all.
The present coaching team did not come together until after the season had started, do these Wum's believe they could do better? reading their post's they obviously believe they could. my opinion is that they could not.

For me the jury on Ostemebor is still out....the Norwich fans didn't seem too disappointed to see him leave. He no doubt has talent, but I think he will need some coaching on work rate and concentration. Before the window our defence was pretty poor...Fonte has made an immediate impression. We all know Barnard has what it takes in this league but if he mis-fires, we have super sub Wiago to get things going! Tough game on Saturday...must win if the play-off dream is to be kept alive. COYR!!!!
Thought I'd have a go at posting about the thread and my thoughts. AP has signed 5 permanent signings 3 defenders, one midfielder and a striker. On Neil Danns I don’t see any other L1 teams buying the best the championship have to offer, we are very lucky indeed we put a bid in for the player and he didn’t come lets get over it. Now on to our actual new players. Fonte is the best defender we have seen at this club for donkeys he is the Rio Ferdinand of L1 and he oozes composure a great signing. Seaborne is a young lad with a lot of talent he can play it out from the back and I think he is a no nonsense defender. Ostemebor is a decent right back lacks a bit of concentration but what Saints player hasn’t he will do a good job for the 6 months he is here for. When Murty is fit semi won't play but he will play all the league games to let Thomas rest and to help against the pacey wingers in this division. Puncheon we haven't seen him play yet but what we have seen he's good on the ball dribbles a lot and when he scores they are usually screamers can be used as a winger or in a midfield 3 just like Mellis could. Barnard well everyone was raving about him saying lets get him and that if AP didn't he would be stupid, now that he has done just that some people are moaning about him, he has only played 3 games has missed a couple of chances due to snatching at them but once he settles I’m sure he will do fine and plays very well I think in a 4-5-1 anyway you never know he might just pop up with a goal against pompey and become a LEGEND. We now have two teams within the squad capable of interchanging to get us through the busy part of the season. 15 wins and a few draws - Wembley Do the Dons - Wembley Do Pompey - Heavenly road to Wembley Southampton Home Fans... you are too quiet... get behind the team... stop the excuses and get the chants going from the second they come out to the final whistle... don't let the silly wimpers and cat callers rule BOSS your own Ground Loud and Proud GET HOARSE FOR SAINTS please make Merrington shout to be heard in his box.... let the enemy fear St Mary's Roar. COYS COYSThanks Dan for explaining to the narrow minded and quick fix people. You are dead right people like Fonte would not join us if they themselves didn't think it was possible to play at the highest level. Went to Brentford last week and great to be in with the away crowd for the first time in years, chatted all 2nd half to a die hard from the Kingsland who saw the same game as me. The new culture has not filted through to SMS not even after 7 home wins on the spin last sat,the exception was the Exeter game where the atmos was awesome. Having watched Saints for over 35 years this is the new dawn we have been waiting for folks and AP will take us to the promised land again.
kfully you,ve admitted to being one!! Maybe you should support Man Chitey if you want instant success!!!!

I think Steven Darby at Liverpool is the RB we are looking to get in on a loan until the end of the season according to some of the pages I have read across t'nternet.
Some of the other speculative links for McSheffrey & Aaron Davies.
