AC Milan wanted Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese

Daily Echo: David Beckham is currently on loan at AC Milan David Beckham is currently on loan at AC Milan

THE Italian club that approached Saints about Nicola Cortese has been identified as AC Milan.

As reported by The Guardian the Serie A giants have inquired about the St Mary's chairman joining their board.

Mr Cortese has told the Daily Echo in the past of his 'excellent contacts' with a number of Serie A sides, including AC Milan.

It was these contacts that helped Saints sign Papa Waigo on loan in the summer from Fiorentina.

Southampton FC today said Mr Cortese had no intention of leaving St Mary's.

Speculation surrounding the story was initially reported on BBC Radio Solent yesterday morning.

Mr Cortese's subsequent interview was broadcast on the same station, which has a commercial deal with the club, today.

The Cortese story is boring, a frank statement from him is on the Saints website.
However Saga going, do we know if it is a loan, or a free transfer?

Well done for sourcing this Bigrich, certainly will help the wage bill.
This could just help ease the money to get Stock or Danns in, or both

Why did the Echo investigation team fail to find this out, instead inferring no Italian team were interested as per one of your other articles on Cortese ?? Knock it on the head Echo, seek unity with our club, through the correct channels not playing it out in the glare of the public, Saints fans are enthused about our new owner and chairman and even if a sex scandal involving animals should come out about either of them you will do well to detract from the support they have at the moment.

Southampton are set to announce the signing of Midfielder Theo Janssen on loan from FC Twente. Janssen, 28, was involved in a drink drive incident in November 2009, which caused FC Twente to take immediate action and suspend his contract with the Club until January 2010.

FC Twente president Joop Munsterman said at the time : "It is unacceptable for a professional footballer to drive in such a state. He put his own life in danger and that of others. A footballer must be aware that he is a model for the youth."

Theo Janssen added: "I was extremely stupid. I drank to celebrate victory. I will never drink and drive again, I have damaged the reputation of the club and football. I am willing to do anything to repair the damage."

Janssen is expected to join Southampton on loan until the end of the season. It is believed that Marek Saganowski will be heading in the opposite direction as part of the deal.

This story really should be dropped by the Echo now. They're really just embarrassing themselves. This is the third story I've read and all they seem to do is contradict themselves. They run a story, say its unfounded then say it was founded. What is the point? Think it needs to do some better research before running a story before it burns any remaining bridges between itself and the club.

Cortese in his interview said that the Italian club could not offer him anything that Southampton couldn't achieve. If The Guardian is right and that club was AC Milan that really shows his ambition for our club.

The Echo at present are at loggerheads with Mr Cortese over the Saints Echo Ban. Have a read of the Saints Echo Charity beat-up and the earlier scurrilous articles which attempted to say the chairman was unknown by their source close to AC Milan labelling The Chairman Cortese Who. Then you'll see why some are a little peeved at the moment. That said the regulars of the threads I believe remain firm fans of Dan Kerins and Adam Leitch.
Sad idiots maybe but normally great supporters of the paper saddened by the current wrangles.

IT AMAZED ME HOW MUCH RUBBISH RUPERT HAD TO PUT UP WITH FROM THE ECHO AND THE DIGNITY AND PATIENCE HE SHOWED WITH THE WAY THE PAPER TREATED HIM.IT SEEMS THAT MR CORTESE IS NOT GOING TO STAND FOR ANY SIMILAR TREATMENT NOW OR IN THE FUTURE.

Couldn't agree more. s/w: deny-trip... classic!)
You are a couple of silly-billies!! Do you believe everything you read in strange places? Silvio is just like the Duke of Edinburgh...he tries to make a joke and get people to not take life so seriously, but fails. Hilariously. How boring must their lives be, when guys like you are just waiting for their next gaffe? As for racists, I think you will find that is the Inter fans, you mis-informed, maleducated Muppets.
Oh, and I will bring you some tea, (but not all of it, cos I should leave some for the Chinese) at St James Park, Exeter. OK?
Can you bring beer instead? I think you're wrong to defend Berlusconi though. Just because he pretends to be a bumbling idiot (as do Borris Johnston and George Bush) it doesn't mean his political position (or theirs) are any the less hateful.

Well Saga has gone, Theo is a top player though, would really help to spread the ball about.
