Next Southampton kit could be a return to 1885

SAINTS could be returning to their roots, according to speculation this morning.

It has been reported that the club's new kit will be a return to the original St. Mary's Young Men Association's kit from 1885.

St. Mary's YMA wore a white kit with a diagonal red sash between 1885 and 1889.

That team went on to eventually become Southampton Football Club.

Following Flybe's decision not to renew their sponsorship of the club, Saints have vowed not to put a sponsor on replica kits next season, as part of the 125 anniversary of the club.

In 2001, Southampton played their last game at The Dell in red and white quarters, in homage to the first kit they ever wore at the ground back in 1898.

You'll not get into Cortese's good books by publishing this story in advance of any statement fro the club.

There was a time when newspapers reported news not speculation and gossip.

Here, here - off with his head!

All joking aside not sure I want to see the team wearing a white shirt with a red sash - and then again not sure I would want to wear it either.
Hark at me worn a red and white striped shirt for 40-years - not exactly subtle is it? I'll feel like I have won a beauty contest - red sash indeed - not very macho!

I'm sure this won't be an exact copy of the original kit, just something that is reminiscent of it.

Personally, I think it'd look great, so long as it's a while shirt with a fairly wide diagonal red stripe.

I agree though, if the diagonal stripe is a single narrow 'sash' like affair then it won't look as good.

Failing that, how about a shirt with a series of diagonal red/white stripes? In other words a combination of the original and of the modern?

Not sure anyone else has diagonal stripes on their shirts-this could be the start of a trend among clubs.

We'd look like a bunch of Jockeys having a kick around.

Why not go the whole hog and have a big star in the middle? or diamond patterns...

In 1885 the first players of St Mary's YMA wore their own long sleived white shirts but were given a red sash to wear diagonally over the shoulder and under the opposite arm, hence the diagonal stripe effect. Usually over the left shoulder but some players wore the sash over the right.
They wore long white trousers tucked into red socks.
The first proper shirt was not worn until 1889 which was red and white quarters.

Why do the sash they are wearing not go in the same directions?

Also what going on with the DE website, very strange set up this week?

If your'e left handed like me, you tend to wear things back to front (although that doesn't apply to Y fronts). I always wore my school sash on sports day over the other shoulder.

Jesus H Christ. I hope this is a wind up. I was really looking forward to the new shirt with no sponsor, please don't ruin it by going all retro on me.
That lot in the picture don't look very cool either, we'd be a laughing stock.
By the way, that geezer 3rd in from the right at the back looks like he's playing pocket billiards! Can any other readers spot a suspicious looking act in the photo?

This will be the worst kit since the dark days of the "pony" strip

We will look like Peru circa 1980

If you want to see how Red and white stripes is done properly look at Athletico Madrid, they nail the design every season.

As for the sponser we are missing s trick here, why not just do a Barcelona and have Unicef or something worthwhile, even a local cause or something.

Great idea. and Pardew will have to wear a full suit and a bowler hat on the touchline.
How about paying the players 19th Century wages, i'm sure they'd be up for it! They could travel to away matches in horse-drawn carriages too. The possibilities are unlimitless!!!

Well never mind the squad - each shirt should be sold with a stick on moutache...how cool would that be when 28,000 retro shirts turn up at SMS all looking circa 1885 with moustaches.
This may not be applicable some of the female followers of The Saints - they may have to undergo wearing of a whale-bone corset!

I like the iea of retro shirts and have a couple of them already. My concern here is that by going back beyond 'stripes' we are moving away from who we are today. I can only assume that it will be a traditional red/white stripes with a collar. We need this to be stylish to sell in sufficient numbers.

The "sash" idea is nice but you would not sell nearly as many.
Red and white stripes IS SFC, last season WBA had their "retro" strip, looked good, no sponsor. Why do we have to go back to celebrate a birthday? I don't wear nappies on mine.
As modern and practical as possible, sell them in their thousands, you will not sell as many for the next couple of seasons but you WILL win more support, you WILL see red and white EVERYWHERE in Southampton. At the moment there are so many "other" clubs tops worn in the city, take the city back and paint it red & white!
In any case a great fan posted this link the other day, all our previous home strips on one page.

The shirt we wore for centenary season of all red was just not us, it was disapointing that that kit represented our centenary. I've always been keen on the '80-'84 Patrick kit, coinciding with our glory days at the top of the first division. Symbolises where we are going "back" to...

I like the idea of donating the shirt space to some charitable venture such as unicef.

Problem with choosing a local charity is that there are so many local ones and it'd be unfair to pick one over the others.

I might prefer the red & white stripes, but someone posted a link to the River Plate strip that I actually thought was quite good.
If done right we can have a clasic but classy strip, that said if NC and the King want to paint the city red & white then they have the perfect opportunity to do so.

Vertical Red and white stripes, red socks with white on them, are my choice, the fifties style preffered, looking at the picture I wonder if there was any significance about whether they dress to the right or to the left!
