Strachan bags Nicky Bailey

Nicky Bailey Nicky Bailey

GORDON Strachan has reportedly clinched the £1.5m signing of Saints target Nicky Bailey.

The 26-year-old midfielder should complete his move to Championship club Middlesbrough next week.

Saints boss Alan Pardew has been interested in again signing the goalscoring midfielder, with West Brom, Norwich and Celtic also keen.

Pardew paid Southend £175,000 for Bailey in the summer of 2008.

The player ended his debut season at The Valley as the club's top league scorer with 13 goals as the Addicks finished rock bottom of the Championship.

He scored 12 times in League One last season.

Shouldn't this story be in the Middlesbrough Echo?

this is good news, Charlton are getting rid of their best players with Shelvey and Bailey now gone. This is why it's relevant to us.

I'm sure Pards is on a beach somewhere swigging back cocktails, and fair play to him - he's earned a holiday. But the beauty is we've now got a coherant scouting network in place and I'm pretty sure there won't be many players escaping under the radar. Can't blame Bailey for picking Boro over us as they're a decent Championship outfit with a top manager and a realistic chance of going up this season. But I'm sure Saints will pull the right names out of the bag before the pre-season starts.

Shame, but I suppose the division gap was the big factor, mind you the choice between living in Southampton or Middlesborough is a bit odd. Maybe he's heard good things about the Bigg Market coz it isn't about the scenery!

Yeah he looks like a culture vulture!

I suspect Mr Strachan may have a good season next year, he's pretty astute and we should have backed him big time, probably our biggest mistake (and there have been many!) of the last decade!

Its time for AP to turn his attention to Brian Stock.

Only one signing so far......... is it time to get concerned with the lack of movement here? I would have thought with our future prospects good players would have flocked to us in their droves. Why only one?

Because we want quality not quantity.
Decent players will come to us because of the ambition this club now has.
If past signings are anything to go by,standby for some gems.

Maybe to the rest of the footballing world were not such an attraction as we think we are. After all we have been sliding in the wrong direction for a few years, and were only on the foot of the ladder on the way back up. Dont get me wrong i know we will make it back to higher the higher division but at this present time we can only offer division one football!!

It's unlikely that you'll see many signings at the moment because of the world cup. The big teams will be seeing who shines and then buying. The fall-out from these signings will ripple down through the leagues as they unload players to make way for the new. Premier to Championship to L1 etc.
Plus players don't want to commit too soon in case a better offer comes along. Expect a rush just before the season starts and even after.

The 'international' transfer window is open, as is the 'out of contract' window.
The 'general' transfer window does not open until 1st July.
I think we will see some signings announced in the first 2 weeks of July!

I am sure we've got scouts at the World Cup.Some of those Swiss players don't look bad. Interesting that any activity has come from people with no interest in that competition: Strachan, Burley and-er- Cotterill, who is not allowed to look at international players until Rupert arrives, and then only asylum-seekers.

To be fair though, most Middlesbrough players do not live in Middlesbrough and their training ground is about twenty miles away from there in Hurworth on Tees (and as my user name suggests I happen to live just down the road from it!)

I think most players live in the leafy suburbs of Stockton - roughly equal distance either way from Middlesbrough and Hurworth.

Therefore they live within just a few miles of the beautiful North York Moors and Hambleton Hills, so actually it may well be the scenery that plays a part in recruiting them to Middlesbrough!

I wonder if we need to use the beautiful countryside not far from Staplewood as more of an enticement. I would imagine Marchwood Power Station is hardly a major attraction!

The new forest. You can't get much more countryside than that.
