Davis: Always some players unhappy

SKIPPER Kelvin Davis admitted that some of the Saints squad were unhappy under Alan Pardew – but he maintained that no manager could keep his all players happy.

Player unrest has been suggested as one of the reasons behind Pardew’s controversial dismissal on Monday.

And when asked about the claims following last night’s 3-0 JPT defeat to Swindon, the experienced goalkeeper said: “I don’t think I have ever played under a manager where everybody likes him and that’s part of being a manager.

“In any job, whatever job you do, if you have got people below you will have people that are not happy and people that are.

“But for me anything that was said between the lads is kept in the dressing room and that is what has built us to where we are today.”

The build-up to last night’s game against Swindon was dominated by the fall-out from Pardew’s sacking.

And Davis admitted the events of the last few days did have an effect on the Saints squad.

“You look at yourself and around the dressing room and before the game we were up for it,” he said.

“We prepared as best as we can. But in the game we looked like a team that didn’t look like it was going to win so that is disappointing.

“It’s going to have some effect.

“But we are pros and we need to get on with it as quickly as we can.

“You need to look to get yourselves together and get yourselves mentally focused again and prepare for an outfit on Saturday.”

Reflecting on the comprehensive defeat to Swindon, which saw JPT holders Saints dumped out of the competition at the first hurdle, Davis admitted: “We didn’t perform on the night.

“Individually and collectively we didn’t perform as we should do against a well organised outfit.

“We got well and truly outdone.

“Disappointment is the word.

“The last thing I did when I left today was look at my medal on the wall and I wanted more of that.”

He is a big time loser - as one step out of line - and he falls victim to a conman who doesn't know the first thing about football, is just on an ego trip, with somebody elses money!!

Yes and the sad part is he is conning the fans, all the hype and speculation amounts to nothing as I said yesterday they are leaving us NC and the ML's got an exit strategy. The final insult would be to put another fish fiddler in charge and Rupert as Chief Executive.Perhaps there are fish fiddlers posing as Saints fans

Absolute rubbish last night I think we have finally fallen victim of another power hungry chairman ok NC and ML saved our club but it doesn't give NC the god given right to sack the best manager we were going to get in this division I mean lets look at his trail of destruction shall we Matt Le tiss and Franny Benali are banned from St Mary's, Photographers banned from St Mary's and now Pardew sacked for no reason know to us you know the people who pay money that were told we wouldn't be left in the dark about anything but are.
So NC has upset Southampton legends, upset the media, upset the players by the look of last nights performance which has no spiralled down to upsetting the fans well done not bad for a few months work. what next gonna ban the fans next if you dont like the songs we are singing. SO TO MR NC HERES A MESSAGE FOR YOU GET O'NEIL OTHERWISE YOU HAVE CONDEMNED US TO ANOTHER YEAR IN LEAGUE 1 MAYBE MORE BECAUSE THE PLAYERS WILL LEAVE IF WE DONT GO UP BECAUSE TO SACK A DECENT MANAGER YOU MUST HAVE HAD ONE LINED UP OH NO YOU HAVEN'T YOU JUST USED THAT BIG EGO OF YOURS INSTEAD OF THINKING FOOTBALL MATTERS YOU KNOW THE ONES THAT GET RESULTS.

I see the numpties got in first on the thread, sad people. Careful Kevin, opening your mouth without toeing the party line could get you thrown out. It does emphasise what most of us thought, it wasn't necessarily a wrong decision, it was just that the timing was questionable. Without panicking, it's vital to get a quality management team in place as soon as possible, there are plenty of good Managers out there without a job and I would rather take one of them, rather than poach one from another Club, that in itself can cause problems.
I still support NC and expect him to make the right choice, but there will be dissenters on whoever he selects.

The way that the sacking was conducted leaves a lot to be desired. There is a lack of maturity in many things around the club and the consequences of decisions do not appear to have been thought through.
Last year we suffered a ten point deduction from which we did not recover to gain promotion. The way the club is currently being conducted is causing ripples and although we say that the players are pros and should cope with the changes I am afraid that life is not like that. The recent events will have a de-stabilising effect and the ten points this year will be lost and not deducted. I hope I am wrong and that promotion is gained. Having looked at the runners and riders for the manager's post the usual suspects have been trecked out. Only one or two of those named can match AP and we certainly do not need someone who has never managed of any of the many times losers that have been featured.
The administrative management should look closely at themselves and pay attention to what the paying public say to them. The present administration needs to take careful stock of the way it conducts itself and the smarten up public relations. It is too insular and NC needs to shed the image of a control freak.
We should all work together for the good of the club and try to re-capture the will to win

Oh God the winging Saints fans that panic at the first sign of trouble are out in force!

NC makes a decision to sack the manager, and everyone calls for his head, but I seem to remember the same people were calling for Pardew's head when we lost to Plymouth. It is pathetic! Everyone is very quick to forget he saved our club, and even quicker to compare him to Rupert Lowe who, to be honest, is way off the scale as miles from Cortese in comparison!

You lot need to get some purspective! I swear there are only three reasonable, level-headed and calm Saints fans in the world, and I am one of them!

Keep the faith, have hope, and don't jump for the lifeboats at the first sign of trouble. Give NC a chance to make the right decision before you start gunning for him, you don't know whats round the corner!

Sacking a manager was no excuse for last night's fiasco & Kelvin was as bad as anyone, but why fiddle with the team after Sat, "if it aint broke dont mend it!". Dont know where we go from here but it would be nice to have a club statement on why & what's next. If it was personal, thats bad management, if it was poor performance fair enough. Come on Mr Cortese be brave & open, we wont bite!Or is the Southampton FC secret society back in force?

Still support NC? Hmmm. Well I hope to make you think again. Read on:
.
1. Raising the prices of corporate hospitality pricing fans that like the odd treat out.
.
2. End of season ticket loans.
.
3. Booking charges/raised on the day ticket prices.
.
4. Spat with local press that is unnecessary.
.
5. Spat with national press that has turned us into a joke again.
.
6. Charging disabled fans for car parking.
.
7. Charging staff for car parking.
.
8. Charging me for parking when I've already paid £50 for corporate seats with the parking being in a quarry!
.
9. Upsetting club legends publicly.
.
10. Untimely quotes about performance last year.
.
I don't want to go on but there are 10 known issues for you. These are not speculation but fact!
.
Do any of you remember the emphasis Rupert put on youth and the academy a few years back? Remember how we all thought we should focus on getting players that could get us out of the then Championship rather than poor money and time at facilities for the future?
.
Starting to look a bit familiar isn't it!
.
I hold my hands up. I was loosing faith in AP. I never lost it totally though. I HAVE lost it with NC and I hope the Lehiberr family can see that the name of Southampton FC is being dragged through the mud again because of one man's actions - That is if they care and I pray that they do.

I appreciate what NC has done for the club. But removing AP at this time was total lunacy.

If Martin Oneill was standing there ready to take over, then fine.

But he obviously isn't. So now the club goes out and loses a game badly with a caretaker who is clearly not up to it, and the team is totally unsettled and the fans getting impatient.

What a total shambles. Another season written off as whoever comes in will want to 'rebuild' (they always do). And when you've had 12 managers in 10 years, having a year to rebuild really doesn't work.

Exactly. I also question NC. Too much has been done at the club to alter it's values of fairness. Yes they still support community groups and so on but the list against is too great and where does it stop?
.
Too many people think because of the money and him wanting to buy the club we have to stick him out but don't forget it is not NC's money. If the family want him out he is gone.
.
I for one am going to keep a close eye on ways to have our chairman replaced.

If anyone thinks sacking Pardew was a good idea is off their rocker I will am confident in saying we will not get a better manager than Pardew I may not know what went on behind the seens but it was the wrong move with Pardew we had more of a chance of going up after last nights performance I'm not so sure now.
I dont think it's clever sacking them all if you had even seen Davies being warmed up they had some guy who couldn't catch the ball when Davies threw it back at him its a complete embarresment.
I think I can have an opinion though I paid for my season ticket so that makes me a paying customer I'll say what I like about who I like coz MR EGO has got this one wrong he is treating it more like a business than a football club you can't be ruthless to everyone MEDIA,LEGENDS,MANAGE
R ETC the guy is on one big power trip and he needs to calm down b4 it's too late. Now before you comment answer this question how many succesful teams do you know where the chairman starts meddling with the team affairs.
get down there saturday and then get back to me about what you have just witnessed coz I'm not confident anymore. I went last night to see how the team would react and they reacted badly if Lamberts head had dropped anymore he'd look like an ostrich in hiding DISGRACE

There's a lot of criticism of NC going on at the minute, but has anyone thought that it may have been the new owners who demanded that AP was removed?

It has been reported in some places that Markus wanted Pardew out and that Cortese defended his position. If that's true, then it would be understandable if Markus' family asked for a new manager as a condition of their continuing support. You have to admit, that would explain the timing of the decision. Just a theory!

Tirau Dan says...
10:33am Wed 1 Sep 10

Telegraph: Southampton have no preferred candidate at this stage but Cortese would like Southampotn's next manager to promote an attacking style of football and to have past experience of winning promotions. Phil Brown of Hull City were 22nd in the Championship when Brown was appointed in 2006 and, within two years, he had guided them into the Premier League.
“I was very surprised on Monday morning to hear Alan Pardew had been sacked but Southampton would be a fantastic opportunity for someone who has the ambition to get back to the Premiership so of course I would be interested,” said Brown.

"I would like to think I’ll get an opportunity to speak to Southampton and hearing what they have to say. Southampton were unfortunate to find themselves in League One, for whatever reason, but it is a club steeped in tremendous history and tradition.”

And as for upsetting people...who cares??.

We are a football club in the wrong division because of mainly poor management in the past.

NC is brand new to this club and cannot be held accountable for the past and has to map out his own future.

Comparisions to Lowe are unfair and unjust , why do some "fans" have to moan about everything... i remember last year when a few including myself were asking for more from Pardew and the team we were met with a barage of abuse, stating such facts that " the club almost folded" and "give it time, anything is better than being in admin on minus 10".

Word. Let's not all form an angry hate mob and start smashing up shops that sell Toblerone. It's not the Southampton way and is one of the things that separates us from the people of Portsmouth.
.
I say we all count to ten and just wait to see what Nicola does next before we judge him. Nicola has spoken about creating a winning team that plays with the 'Southampton style' and I think Pards has always been the first to admit his sides don't have the most flair in the world, so perhaps Nicola wants a manager that will get us playing more attractive football. And if that man is Phil Brown or Zola and if that works out and we go up playing better football then it will be a good thing. Let's all just wait and see.
.
I would like to know where Nicola gets his advice on footballing matters, mind. I think David Bick probably has a greater role in the running of the club than we might think.

Just being obnoxious and abusive won't solve anything, but if it makes you feel better about it, carry on, don't expect me to go down the same depressing road, Snakes and Ladders, I said, we are back to the start, show me a long ladder and lets go up it.

I rate him but don't like the little hands-free microphone thingie he always wears. It's like he's come on Stars In Their Eyes as literally the worst-ever Madonna impersonator and I keep expecting him to do the Vogue dance on the touchline.

If anyone thinks I'm being to harsh I dont give a f**k because I paid and watched footballers who gave their all not give a stuff last night because someone wants to be the big man
why do you spend all that energy on commenting on issues you don't know about. If you get the complete reason for the sacking then comment on it. By the way, he is the chairman and that gives him the right to sack the manager. And do I understand correct by you thinking you know best because you actually paid admission last night?
oh he is chairman I didn't know that you complete tool

I will go down on sunday and get back to you. On a good note at least you cut down on the Caps :)

You sad muppet you lot are not in the majority of fans who are disgusted that we sack a decent manager 4 games into the season, the Northam end called support for AP and against NC. You and your fish fiddler friends have won this round but real Saints fans we win in the end
Still support NC? Hmmm. Well I hope to make you think again. Read on: .
My response
1. Not bothered I am a Terrace man.
2. Plenty of alternative ways to finance loans, it is just knowing where to look.
3. Yes, don't like that one, but can live with it if it helps the Club.
4. & 5. Not too bothered about the Press, they have never been bothered about us unless it was negative.
6. Out of Order and needs to be revoked.
7. & 8 I don't have a car but I can see that is a bit naff!
9. It takes two to tango, there has been a bit of slagging off from both directions, plus a lot of unfounded rumour spreading.
10. Only saying what we were all thinking, but were afraid to say for fear of rocking the boat, it is just the sense of timing is dubious to say the least.

I can add a couple of negatives too, 11. I don't want an on line Programme, just a printed souvenir of the game. 12. I don't want to rely on the dodgy Saints Player for my on line access to matches, and 13. for pities sake do something about the Tannoy system in the Kingsland, it is rubbish.

None of these will change my resolve to support the Club.

APs gone -get over it.
Memories are short. We thrashed Bristol 4-0 at the weekend, and we can take our revenge out on Swindon within two weeks. One bad game doesn't make a bad team: I didn't see Man U crumble after we embarrassed them 6-3; and last year we still won games after being humiliated by Huddersfield and Brighton 3-1 each time. We got our own back on Huddersfield later in the season - but not with the Seagulls.
Think of football as a long-term investment; you wouldn't sell your shares just because they performed badly one afternoon on the Stock Market.
Get behind the team, the Chairman and the new manager - whoever he is!

All the people abusing NC should perhaps reflect that he's the only person who the Liebherr family are going to trust when it comes to being asked to put their hand in their pockets once again.
Phil Brown did a good job at Hull. OK the halftime talk on the pitch was a mistake but at least it shows he's got passion, so if it's him, let's give him a chance.

Hoddle for me. Experienced, good tactician, knows Saints. Fans need to get over what happened. He left Saints for Spurs and we were 8th in the league. No different to Tiss managing at Reading and leaving to come to us.

Do not see any other candidate other than O'neil or Errikson that is high profle enough to appease fans or players and neither one of them is coming here. Maybe Keegan?

Its about time we bit the bullit and excepted Hoddle is the only candidate that ticks all the boxes. otherwise its coleman, Dowie, Southgate?? Not for me.

1. Hoddle
2. Keegan

I notice the Echo used archive pictures in their paper report, SM pictures not good enough or too expensive? Time this nonesense was sorted out, why have we not heard from the Football League? They must have some sort of protocol or guidlines in their dealing with the Press? Surely we must be in breach of any national agreements and we are under Footbal League regulations and protocols.

Your welcome, but we don't hate you as individuals just your club.
I thought Pardew was doing a reasonable job as manager, football isn't science you spend this and this happens. There is a lot of luck involved.
Look at Man City spend £400m and they can't beat Sunderland.
As an football fan looking in, it seems that Cortese may be part of the problem and not the solution. So don't get relegated as I am looking forward to playing you in the league next year.

That's true about the May statement, but I think the subsequent pre-season tour might have changed things more than it first appeared. For Nicola it was a way of bringing his 'baby' back to his homeland and saying "Look what I've built, people of Switzerland", but then we lost both games and the people of Switzerland would have been "O, that was a bit of a waste of time," and Nicola's pride would have been a little hurt.
.
Personally, I wouldn't have got rid of Pardew but then I'm quite lazy and slapdash and tend to just let things be so long as they're vaguely sort of alright. Nicola, on the other hand, is incredibly driven and ambitious, and I'm grateful we've got someone like that working for the good of the club. I say give him time.

Trying to get a proper perspective on why Alan Pardew is no longer Manager of our beloved Club.
From the posts on the board some of the issues seem to be
1. Alan Pardew's ability to have the respect of a few of the players.......the names are unmentioned but this is acknowledged by Kelvin Davis. The question is who are these players? Are any of them key players such as Lambert , Lallana etc whose support of the Manager is essential?
2. There have been questions about Lambert's weight and comments that he is not the player he was last season....if true then why?
3. The incosistency of results and the struggles against some of the weaker teams....this season and last.
4. The choice and timing of substitutes something that has been questioned
5. Getting things corrected ASAP without the uncertainty that prevailed last season
6 Having a Manager with a lot of Charisma who both motivates the Fans and players alike ......maybe someone from Italy who has good connections there . Maybe Phil Brown who did so well with Hull City and who is on record as wanting the job.
Obviously there were issues behind closed doors but we all have to move forward from here. Yes Alan Pardew scored at least 7 out of 10 and he's a nice guy but Mr Cortese obviously didn't have the confidence in him to feel he'd almost guarantee our promotion . Mr Cortese has made an unpopular decision but obviously has the confidence in himself to do what he is doing and once the dust has settled we could be looking forward to some exciting times at St Mary's.

Three points on Saturday and it all looks ok again. Shame we missed out on any deadline deals though. Brown would be ok but I reckon Dave Merrington would do a good job at this level
