The most attack-minded team in League One will be looking for another goal bonanza when they take on an out of form side this weekend.

Nigel Adkins’ Saints are rattling in the goals this season and are now preparing to take on a Carlisle side who travel to St Mary’s on the back of a hat-trick of defeats in all competitions and with just one away win in over four months.

Though Peterborough have been stealing the headlines for their incredible scoring and conceding record, Saints have been quietly assembling an impressive set of statistics of their own.

The 4-4 draw with Posh at London Road was the SEVENTH time this season Saints have scored four or more goals in a League One fixture.

That remarkable record – notched up in matches against Bristol Rovers, Dagenham & Redbridge, Peterborough (twice), Huddersfield, Exeter and Oldham – is even better given that the season is only just over the halfway mark.

You have to go back to 1979/80 and a team managed by Lawrie McMenemy and featuring the likes of Mick Channon, Alan Ball, Steve Williams and David Peach to find a campaign where Saints managed to better that feat.

They notched at least four goals in eight league matches that term.

They beat Spurs 5-2, Derby 4-0, Crystal Palace 4-1, Nottingham Forest 4-1, Manchester City 4-1, Brighton 5-1, Bristol City 5-2 and Middlesbrough 4-1.

Saints’ post-war record stands at 13 matches, that coming in the 1957/58 Division Three South campaign.

Only Bournemouth and Peterborough can beat Saints for league goals scored so far this season, but nobody can match Adkins’ men for shots on target.

Saints notched 200 for the season at London Road – with a further 182 off target and 13 strikes against the woodwork as well.

No League One club has come close to testing the keeper as often while only Leeds in the Championship have done better with 208.

Even the Premier League big guns cannot match Saints with Arsenal the closest rivals with 168.

At the forefront of Saints’ attack has been Rickie Lambert, whose four goals in two games have taken him to 13 for the season.

That leaves him fourth in the League One top scorers chart, one behind Will Hoskins of Bristol Rovers and two behind Bradley Wright-Phillips (Charlton) and Craig Mackail-Smith (Peterborough).

Thirteen of Wright-Phillips’ 15 league goals, though, were scored for Plymouth.

Lambert is leading the way for shots on target, though, with 46 so far this season – and you can add to that 37 off and five strikes of the woodwork.

Adal Tarrabt of Championship leaders QPR leads the way in the English professional ranks with 60 shots on target.

The best in the top flight is Didier Drogba with 39.
