Southampton FC's Dan Seaborne in serious condition after city centre altercation

Daily Echo: Police at the scene of the attack in London Road Police at the scene of the attack in London Road

SAINTS defender Danny Seaborne is in hospital following an attack outside a nightclub in Southampton.

The incident happened in the early hours of this morning outside Junk nightclub in Southampton.

The player was found outside the club, lying on the ground with serious head injuries.

Initially the injuries were described by police as "potentially life-threatening" before staff at Southampton General Hospital have since updated his condition to "serious but stable", mid-morning.

Dan Seaborne biography
Ex-club's best wishes for defender

It is believed the 24-year-old centre half had been inside the club, in London Road, with friends earlier in the evening where an incident had taken place.

But trouble brewed outside the venue, leading to police being called to the scene around 2.51am.

Mr Seaborne, 24, was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Southampton General Hospital.

It is understood his family are at his bedside while vital tests and scans are being carried out.

Detectives are now investigating the attack and have already identified a number of potentially vital witnesses however they are urging anyone who was inside the club last night and this morning, or anyone who was in London Road and witnessed the attack, to come forward.

This morning the scene of the attack outside Junk Nightclub remained sealed off by police as well as a next door estate agent.

The forensic unit had arrived and officers wearing blue gloves were examining a side entrance to the night spot as well as an area at the back.

The next door estate agents was open but cordoned off by blue and white police tape while a police community support officer stood guard outside the cordon.

Members of the public on their way to work this morning were stopping and staring as officers went about their investigations.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Witnesses should contact Shirley CID on 101 or the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Yesterday Mr Seaborne took part in an open training session at St Mary's with his team mates in front of fans.

The player has been at Saints since January 2010, after being signed for a fee in the region of £250,000 from Exeter.

Earlier this week Saints completed the signing of another centre half - Celtic defender Jos Hooiveld, 28.

That sounds like a wonderful idea, shame those in charge dont see it that way, and soon we will have even less police on the street thanks to the cuts.

We let this happen by becoming soft, No dicipline in schools, No national service, a massive benefit culture for those unfit to bring up children to live a realitive life of luxery and passing their negative views on to their children, who then go on to be such 'stand up' members of society!

I have been staying on London Road for the past four weeks and during that time, there have been two serious assaults outside Junk and a rape round the back of the building. That, and the rising number of beggars and junkies roaming the area, makes it a very unsafe place to be. Lack of sufficient police presence in what must be one the the busiest areas in Southampton combined with soft punishments for those that are caught means things will only continue to get worse.

It's a shame that Southampton hasn't got some nicer clubs for our players to go to rather than Junk and what was the White House. They are horrible clubs and clearly attract vile people. Shocking news. Really hope that Dan is ok and, as others have said, they catch the moron(s) that have done this. Very sad to hear how serious his injuries sound.

I must however say (and this really isn't meant insensitively at all), after the Lee Barnard incident earlier this year that although I don't think it is fair to stop a player/human from enjoying themselves like the rest of us, it is clear the Saints players are high-profile targets these days and some idiots obviously seem to thrive on throwing both abuse and punches at them!

Although I don't necessarily think it is right, maybe Adkins should consider "banning" players from the clubs of Southampton?

Unfortunately successive governments across the board have taken many rights of parents and schools to discipline children away.
With this we have seen an ever increasing wave of violence in young adults and teens. yet the government wrings its hands and says its not our fault. It is, very much the government's fault. Give schools and parents the tools back to discipline their children. (that does not mean abuse). Show young people that this is the line and you do not cross, thus teaching them self control. That is the best cure to the behaviour in society today. We have many un-employed, its about time National Service returned 3 years in the services compulsory, for all our young people. yes they do learn about combat, but they they also learn discipline and self control. In Spain national service also means working with fire fighters, working in hospitals as porters.
Hope everything goes well Dan and family. Hope that you will be well enough soon to be back amongst your other family Saints.

Are you talking specifically about Dan? Even if you are, like you say no one deserves this. I've witnessed first hand money going to young players heads. Without being disrepectful or tarring all footballers with the same brush not all of them are the sharpest of cookies and are then put in a situation where they are treated like superstars and given huge amounts of money. What help are they given to deal with this in the correct manner? None, i would suggest. Get well soon Dan, he signed an autograph for my son at St Marys yesterday and like all the players was great and stuck around for ages signing autographs and having pics taken.

As someone who lives in a lovely, spacious flat in London Road and near to Cartlon Crescent, some of the incidents I witness going on in London Road beggar belief. When I bought the flat 7 years ago it was a pleasant and modestly lively road with only Junk open 'til 2am. I am now often woken up as late as 5am and witness mostly very young people who are generally seriously the worse for drink. I have actually witnessed a young man lying spreadeagled in the centre of the road with a bottle in one hand and singing! The entrance to my flat, which is one of 5 large apartments, is an open porch with a video entry system. Not only do people vomit, urinate and worse in our porch but it is often used as a meeting place and sometimes a bedroom for a variety of beggars and tramps. Some people also think it amusing to press the buzzer to one of the flats at all hours of the morning which activates the entry phone in with a loud noise that will always wake me up. The police presence is very poor to the degree that I rarely see any police in London Road and definitely not at my end (The Varsity). I attended a residents meeting some time ago and a councillor was quite unsympathetic and simply referred to it as 'Southampton's Night Time Economy'. The taxi rank extends way beyond it's allocated space right down to Bellevue Road and around the corner. The slamming of taxi doors is another delightful feature especially on Tuesday, Friday & Saturday nights long into the following morning. It is high time the venues in and around London Road were carefully policed and licenses seriously questioned. It is an offence to serve someone you know or suspect to be drunk and that law is a joke if what I see regularly is anything to go by. Having said all that I wish Dan Seaborne a speedy recovery and my thouights are with him and his family. One last point that may be controversial - I have to wonder what a professional footballer is doing in a night club mid-week at almost 3am.

I am a Pompey fan living in Southampton and the First thing I'd like to say is send my best wishes to Dan Seabourne and his family, nobody deserves a beating like this and I hope he recovers and gets back to full health quickly.

It shows that football rivalry is one thing, but it's only a game, and for people to have done this to a fellow human being whatever the circumstances, that society is doesn't respect any sort of authority anymore.

Give the police back the powers to deal with offenders properly instead of fearing for their jobs.

I'm 39 and still wouldn't answer back a copper to this day because that is how I was brought up, to respect authority.

I digress, get well soon Dan.

It's a tradegy in a young mans life. I said earlier might be "career threatening" because it sounds like a bad fracture of his skull - "serious head injury" "life threatening" - what else could it be?

If you're a professional football, and a centre half in particular, you are going to need to challenge for headers, lots of clashing of heads and innumerable big clearing headers during a match.

Let's hope all is well for him, great news that he is now stable, his life comes first - but his hopes and dreams of his football career would seem under threat.

Lots of good points. Once upon a time London Road and Bedford Place were fairly quiet, but come the relaxing of the licencing laws the bars can open later. Smelling cold hard cash more people have got in on the act by opening bars and they're all chasing trade trying to get people as hammered as possible.

I'm no lawyer, but I do understand that the council have responsibility for granting licences. It seems they've been giving out too many with too long hours and have gone for a strategy of concentrating bars and clubs in a very small space with the effect of creating a particularly unpleasant and volatile environment.

Best wishes and thoughts go to Dan :( I know what it's like to have a head injury so hope it's nowhere near as bad as mine but yet again, they've gone to a club know for it's trouble. Why is this club STILL allowed to be open? We went through a massive argument about certain things with both Whitehouse and Junk. Did things change? No unfortunately. I got a photo taken with him yesterday and it's quite scary to think that he was attacked less than 24 hours later.
I hope this isn't as bad as it seems and it just something like a black eye (concerning the head injury)
Thoughts are with Dan and his family at this time, I hope he manages a speedy recovery

I am not asserting that Danny Seabourne can be categorised in the former or was he attacked by the latter.

There appears to be something lacking in our society; those who once had our respect; bankers, bishops, media, police, politians, teachers and others in authority, have let us down miserably.

Let us all hope young Danny recovers soon and perhaps we ought to spare a moment or two for his family.

large numbers of drunk people loitering around being abusive.
On the latest occasion the so called 'security' were ignoring it
and when asked for help by a friend was told 'what's it got to do with me'.
I would have to question whether the owners/management of the club are capable of running this place.
It seems all they are interested in is advertising so called big name DJ's to
attract clubbers but fail to provide a
safe environment for the public.
Surely the Police and City Council can
enforce some sort of punishment on this troublesome venue.

Maybe one for the licencing committee - though thse places always seem to be getting second chances
For many years local residents have told both Planning and Licensing Panels not to allow extended hours at bars and clubs, if they believed the evidence of the objecters instead of the bar owners much bloodshed in recent years would have been avoided. The Labour Government changed the rules in 2003 and now we are not allowed to object to licences or extensions.
Perhaps Dan could afford to sue the Junk club and the Council for his injuries ?

Southampton is out of control - the police have completely lost it according to my kids of similar age. This is happening continuously. The police are nowhere to be seen. Incompetent or out of touch? The sum amounts to the same.............. Sadly the police are useless and as a result I worry about my kids every night they are in town. Let some people with real expertise on the streets and shelve the police they just are so out of touch and normally run a mile from any trouble.

Please Saints give these players a short-list of civilised clubs.

Within the last year I have been invited to two birthday parties in the Bedford Place/London Road area.
Unfortunately during the course of the evening it was suggested we go to JUNK.
I'm sure it is no coincedence on both
occasions fighting was taking place either inside or outside the club with
large numbers of drunk people loitering around being abusive.
As it was (apparently) the bouncers of the club that did it, they clearly are totally incapable of providing a safe environment and the club should be shut down if it proves that was indeed the case.

First and foremost I hope he makes a fast and full recovery...

However a very good friend of mine was present in the club when this occured and I think you'll find your "saintly" Dan started the whole thing, by getting drunk and kicking off.

I also heard that, but that doesn't give the bouncers the right to kick the **** out of their guests after ejecting them.

Managed to post on the wrong thread!

Regarding Dan. Bouncers are paid professionals as are footballers, when someone steps out of line there needs to be serious consequences. Cantona was provoked, It didn’t justify a kung-fu kick. Dan may well have had too much to drink and was acting like an idiot, he may have even “offered them out” but bouncers are there to do a job, that does not include putting someone in hospital for days.
