Departing winger tips Saints for European glory
9:00am Saturday 2nd June 2012 in Saints News
By Gordon Simpson, Senior Sports Reporter
Lee Holmes
Lee Holmes believes Saints will soon become a “force to be reckoned with” in English football.
The winger has backed the club to continue their incredible rise up the divisions and eventually challenge towards the top of the Premier League.
Holmes, who was released this summer, reckons that within five years Saints could be competing for a European spot, and possibly even a Champions League place.
“The club is only going to go onwards and upwards,” said the 25-year-old, who this week agreed a two-year deal with League One side Preston.
“There’s a passion behind the scenes that means they won’t stop until they achieve what they want.
“There is going to be a time where Southampton will be a force to be reckoned with in English football.
“In the next five years, I expect them to be right up there with the best of them.”
So, is European football a possibility in that timeframe?
Holmes certainly thinks so.
“You look at the passion and backing behind the club, and the infrastructure involved, and I can’t see why not,” he said.
“Look at the clubs in the Premier League who are all fighting for European spots. I can’t see why Southampton can’t get right up there.
“I’m not saying it will be next season, but definitely in the next few years.”
And what about the pinnacle of European club competition, the Champions League?
“Long term, I think you could only look to strive for that,” said Holmes.
“The long term goals between everyone in the club are that they are looking for the highest achievement in football.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if there isn’t a plan in place for that to happen in the next five years, or maybe a little bit longer.”
Holmes points to another club that not too long ago dropped out of the Premier League, only to return and start seriously challenging the established top four or five sides.
“Look at Newcastle,” he said.
“They’re a massive club, but it’s only a few years ago that they were down in the Championship, so I think it’s something that could happen for Southampton.”

He was on loan at Cheltenham Town last season and now is in the England squad! He must deffo be a cracking player for the future. I hope we get him. Going to Wembley today so I'll do some scouting!

There is a pattern emerging regarding the players it is said we are going for. Young English players, all with the potential to play for England. Rodriguez, Ince and Butland.
I think some posters miss the point over the past three years Saints have signed the best players to get us to the Premiership. Common sense tells me that this will continue, and buying very good young players is the way forward. The next few weeks will be very interesting. Holmes is right European football is just around the corner.

It might be better to buy him and then loan him out (possibly back to Birmingham), giving him game time, and buy another slightly older keeper to challenge Davis for a couple of seasons.

I wouldn't mind having Guthrie back.
Other released players who I wouldn't mind us signing are Steinsson a RB from Bolton, Keith Andrews CM from West Brom, and Pavel Pogrebnyak from Fulham, who scored 6 goals in 12 games at the end of last season. They may be too old to fit into the 'Southampton Way' though.

When some footballers earn more per week than the PM does in a year it seems stupid. I read the other day that despite recessionary times the Prem increased year on year revenue by quite a bit but it's all gone on increased wages. In the states most owners of big sports clubs turn a decent profit, here it seems you have to subsidise the club despite massive income.

I have watched a few of blackpool's games recently and have been very impressed by tom ince.he is a very intelligent player, with good vision and ball skills, and is always ready to drop back and defend, and perhaps is someone who could be converted into a solid mid-field player.I know we are looking to sign rodriguez and have read that we have an interest in liam trotter, but ince at only twenty years old is surely someone worth going after.the snag is that he isn't exactly a well kept secret and is going to attract a lot of attention from other premiership teams.however as we at last have financially sound owners as well as around £40 million from our recent promotion he could be a very sound investment.
do any other saints fans have an opinion regarding him.

Wonderful too. I thought the entire family looked so splendidly regal on the river yesterday.
Indeed it would be very hard to imagine any of them them this morning sitting on the toilet, straining and blowing off like many of us ordinary folk - and as a staunch royalist on this very special day, I don't think we should even try to imagine such a thing.

I have heard in the last few days fans who will renew their Season Ticket if we buy some Top Quality Players.
One wavering fan talked about THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON getting beaten regularly in the Premiership at Home.
Look it's NOT ROCKET SCIENCE .... WE DEMAND SUCCESS AND THE WINS and if we haven't got the Squad and the Players - then we need to invest to get them in.
Everyone knows :
1) We need to strengthen the Goalkeeping Squad.
2) The Defence needs beefing up.
3) A CB to challenge Jose and keep the pressure on Jos.
4) A pacy goalless scoring Midfielder.
5) Need a Striker like Hooper.
JRod - when he signs will be useful playing off RICKIE.
We need to hear news about players coming in.
If we start the Season and do not deliver - then Nigel will only have himself to blame.
SAINTS FANS WANT TO CONTINUE WINNING.
WE ARE RED ARMY - THE NUMBER ONE SQUAD IN THE SOUTH - NO FEAR NO SURRENDER - WIN. COYR.

What on earth gives that woman the right to rule over the rest of us? Oh yes the belief that somehow god so decreed it should be her? What in this day and age? give me a break monarchists can go and do one..

Welcome back.
Sad that the blue few have to come on here to vent their spleen.
I suppose when you have less an less people to dissagree with, the arguments get boring.
All very quiet on the transfer front but I suspect all hell will break out very shortly.

Mind you, Prince Philip or Carla Bruni in a Saints top? In that contest, I'd have to opt for Carla.

We need blue-blooded 'Royal Highnesses' leading us because a red-blooded 'lowlyness' just wouldn't fit the bill.
If we had 'King Wobblycat', Viscount Slugger, 'Lord Redarmy1' or 'The Duke of Rob the Saint NOT in NZ' on the throne it just wouldn't work for me.
Or imagine 'King Seedhouse the Unrepentant' - he'd have all the skunts heads chopped off and say things like sh!te, fcuk, bollokcs and tw@t at the opening of Parliament.
Anyway are you really the Count of Montecristosaint?

and before anyone starts. ask yourself this how did this family accumalate the wealth and land all those hundreds of years ago. they stole it they did not buy it they killed for it.and with the increase in wealth they paid for armies to gain more wealth.
got more respect for the great train robbers and that's not much.

It must be very depressing to know that your team are history.
It's great that we can make you happy.
If you like our site so much why don't you join our merry band.
You will find that wearing red and white will always cheer you up.
I gave the same advice to Pompey Phil when he needed to find some new friends.
Not sure he has yet seen the light but can only hope.
I sincerely hope that you have a good think about this.
