Dutch left-back Alexander wants Saints move
1:00pm Monday 2nd July 2012 in Saints News
Saints' current first choice left back, Danny Fox
SAINTS are hoping to beat off competition from two Premier League clubs to sign defender Alexander Buttner.
The 23-year-old left back, who plays in the Dutch league for Vitesse Arnhem, is reportedly a target for Fulham and QPR.
Buttner, who has a year left on his current contract, has already held talks with the London sides, after his club allowed him to visit England, and was supposedly meeting Saints officials last Friday.
He is also attracting interest from German club Werder Bremen. But it is St Mary's that appears to be his first choice.
"I want to go to Southampton," he is quoted as saying in the Dutch media today. "I have to wait for both clubs to reach an agreement, but I count on the co-operation of Vitesse."
"It would be a massive disappointment if this didn't go through.
"I have been to Southampton and everything - including the living conditions - is perfect."
Buttner, who played as a winger before being converted to a left back, was named in the Netherlands' provisional list of 36 players for the Euro 2012 tournament, one of nine uncapped players to be chosen by manager Bert van Marwijk.
He didn’t make the final squad, though.
Danny Fox made Saints’ left back role has own last season, but Nigel Adkins is searching for more competition.
Dan Harding and Ryan Dickson can both play left back, but the latter is totally out of favour and didn’t play a single league game last season.
Harding, a regular when Saints won promotion from League 1 in 2010/11, was restricted to just 12 Championship starts last season plus eight off the bench.
Adkins has only made one summer signing so far – breaking Saints’ transfer record to bring in Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez for a fee around the £7m mark.
• This is just one of the many rumours that have made the Saints Transfer Rumour Round-Up, which is updated daily to provide fans with a one-stop shop with all the transfer gossip involving Saints.

I suppose this could be claimed to make a reference to Fox not being the long term choice, competitio ofr places etc .. but it's far more likely that they couldnt find a picture .. come on Echo .. deny it !!!

You're entitled to your opinion mate, but unless you have some history and ability on a par with NA and NC, I think I'd rather trust in their decision making than your musings on potential transfer targets. There's a lot more to landing the targets you want than just throwing huge sums of money about. Plenty of examples of just where that gets you if you have a look around.

The new shirts are okay same style as the old Palace shirts of about 30 years ago. Would of liked something more traditional of our club to be honest.
Whilst we are looking it seems to sign young players, what about a couple of older experienced players that have top level experience, which we are woefully lacking?
We are woefully short of proven ability at this level.
I am sure that NA and NC will find the balance.
As NA said we only have one chance at this and we have to get it right. Also the comment there are no plans to buy in January, it will be done pre season.
As a club we are bigger than Rangers and Fulham with better facilities and potential but we have to prove it on the park.

On a more worrying note; there was a short article in the Sundays Daily Express, that the board at Southampton were not convinced NA was up to the job of managing a club at the highest level, and that his position was under threat already. Did anyone else read this on this forum; surely we're not going to have another Pardew situation if we don't get off to good start. NA more than deserves a full term in the top flight imo. I,d be very dissapointed with NC if this article had any truth in it. Any thoughts!

I think this guy sounds perfect; young, hungry, and - if he was in the preliminary squad for the Holland euro team - he must be pretty good already, with bags of potential for the future!
In response to those who say pay more and get proven quality, we would have to pay the type of money Man City/Utd, Liverpool, Arse etc. pay to get guarunteed quality, which we can't afford, especially as it comes with ridiculous wages (and lets face it, those teams buy their fair share of lemons at ridiculous prices, so spending doesn't always guaruntee success).
Or, we could pay 'medium' money and get someone who is pretty good, but never quite made it to the top, who will do a job but never be anything exceptional, and I don't see how that can take us to the next level.
Or, we buy someone who has the potential to be great, the youth and hunger to prove it, at a reasonable price. I think that's a much better option, and this guy fits the bill perfectly!
So, I think he's a great buy!
Oh, and I wore my Sanderson goalkeeper kit for years, and never saw the need to change it until it fell apart. Then I bought the 125 year black away kit, which is the best football top I've ever seen, and so I bought six of them and will wear them until I die. So, I don't care what new strip they bring out:-)

Cork isn't a proven international, he also isn't a proven Premier League player, he has only played for lower league.
BUT Stuart Pearce rates him and we have had him for a whole season now.
This lad was picked for a provisional squad, didn't quite make the cut.
Micah Richards was not in the England squad, but currently rated at several million quid.
Do you suggest we buy him ?
After all he must be good, he is in the Olympic squad, just like Jack !
Some fans are not happy who ever we are linked with and claim to know some player who would be better, just can't name them at the moment.
So far Saints have made all the right moves and not wasted large amounts of money. Unlike the lot down the road, they had lots of Premier experienced players, still do. Didn't do them a lot of good did it ? Still isn't doing them a lot of good !
Jelle was bought by a previous administration, not by Nigel .
So far he seems to have spent wisely and has not jumped for the obvious players, when we have been linked with a player, there have always been other good clubs who have also looked.
QPR + Fulham have managers who have serious experience in buying succesfully, Nigel has made this player a target and he appears to fancy coming to us before these other two.
That on it's own is a good sign.

I was commenting that the purchase of Buttner is being dissed by Salv, and comparing him with previous purchases and other players and getting myself tied in all sorts of knots.
but I knew what I meant.
Some people are not happy who ever we buy and when they turn out to be quite good, they claim they always thought they would.
Me, I just support the Saints, and that means whoever pulls on the jersey, whatever colour that is at the time too, I support those players because they are playing for my club.

In the fair play league we need to balance the books, so if we can get £7m for him that would balance out the Jayrod purchase. Probably won't get quite that much !
Who else can we sell for a reasonable fee that has served us well but won't make the cut at Premier League level?
Nigel did say in one of his interviews that the task of moving players on was one of the more difficult tasks in management, but also necessary.

Im sure this guy will do a job but is he a player that would be pushing for European Qualification? . Just think if your going to pay 2 million you may as well pay another 2 and get someone you know is decent. Rather than just waste 2 million? The Salv wrote:So, in order to get to the next level, how many players do you reckon we should get?promised land wrote:No I am suggested that if Saints need to move to the next level you need to sign better players than you have already got. . This guy isnt even a recognised international player. . As another poster has mentioned about Lambert and Lalana and Rodriguez, these are only Championship proven players. . Pay a little more and get proven ability, otherwise we will just end up with another Jelle Van Dam!The Salv wrote: Dont bother - not even a recognised international player.so you are suggesting we change the entire squad ? because no one at Saints are recognised internationals.
