Saints make Sharp start to pre-season tour of Switzerland
9:10pm Wednesday 18th July 2012 in Saints News
BILLY SHARP
Billy Sharp staked an early claim in pre-season after firing a hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Swiss side Etoile Carouge.
Saints overturned a half-time deficit as they opened up their summer tour with a resounding victory against the Geneva-based side.
It was Sharp, one of nine substitutes for Nigel Adkins ’ team at the break, who stole the show with an impressive treble.
The striker faces stiff competition in his position this season, with Saints boasting an attacking corps that also includes Rickie Lambert , Jay Rodriguez, Tadanari Lee and Guly do Prado.
But his performance last night will have done his chances of winning a place in the team no harm at all.
Saints fell behind in the 38th minute, as Jos Hooiveld headed a cross into his own net.
But, following a mass of half-time changes, they were soon back level, as teenage star Luke Shaw, playing in an advanced role, curled in a right foot shot nine minutes after the restart.
Sharp put Saints in front with 20 minutes left, converting James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick from the left.
He added another with a smart finish six minutes later, before completing his hat-trick as he slid home after collecting Calum Chambers’ pass late on.
Saints: Davis (Forecast 46), Butterfield (Richardson 46), Fonte (Stephens 46), Hooiveld (Seaborne 46), Fox (Harding 46), Schneiderlin (Hammond 46), Ward-Prowse, Lallana (Chambers 46), Puncheon (Chaplow 67), Guly (Shaw 46), Lambert (Sharp 46).

Top headline writing Gordon.
Mind you, the 'tour' actually consists of one match before crossing into France for the Evian match on Saturday. So, it could just as easily have read, "Saints make sharp 'end' to pre-season tour of Switzerland".
Anyway, nice one Billy.

Sounds like a good match and nice to see the youngsters are featuring and doing well. Looks like the plan is coming together, if the team do well it will be so much easier to keep them at the club.

7/1 for a top 10 finish, worth a punt me thinks?
Sometimes I think we might struggle, particularly with such a hard start other times I think we will do well. Can't wait to find out which it's to be!

Yes, sounds like a good match. I would have loved to have gone. Alas, it's a fair drive and my mate in Geneva is away. Furthermore, I had to work until 4.30pm and have to start again at 7.30am tomorrow. Saturday's also out as I'm on Eurostar home.
There's always next year when, on the Swiss tour, we'll be billed as Premier League Champions :)

Still, I've planned the autumn around several matches. All I need now is to creep nicely to all those lovely ST holders I know and see if there's any way of getting tickets. **** nuisance selling out every game. I hate success. Can't we play in League 1 again?
I suppose (whilst there's time) I could always take a trip down to Goldsmith Avenue. Anyone got a spare bell?

Well done the young players, nice praise from NA on OS.
After the Buttner episode I will celebrate Clyne coming as soon as it is on the OS.
Nice to see Tandori was around even if he did not play.

Well done the youngsters too Ward-Prose, Chambers and Shaw all sounding like being up to the standard required.
It would be nice to hear something about Lee getting 45-mins under his belt.
On a related article nice to see Clyne unveiled today, maybe even Buttner too? Do we ned another centre-back or will Seaborne be good enough?
"Tommy Forecast keeps clean sheet horror!" Surely that warrants a bigger headline?

B.Sharp was wearing number 10 last night and Do Prado was wearing 22. I think this might be the squad numbers seeing as Lallana was wearing his usual number 20. Hopefully nobody has gone for last seasons squad numbers on there new Saints kit.
Numbers last night meant nothing I'm sure.

Where was Jay Rod last night? Injured? It seems that Tad Lee is still not recovered from his injury of last season.

As for Lee, he's not going to be ready for the start of the season but should be in the frame come September.

Further, I expect the odds to drop considerably as Messrs Cortese & Adkins continue to recruit.
