Adkins still has room for more signings

Saints retain plenty of room for manoeuvre in the transfer market this summer, despite having to name a 25-man squad for the coming season.

Manager Nigel Adkins has already made four captures ahead of the Premier League campaign, with Jay Rodriguez, Steven Davis, Nathaniel Clyne and Paulo Gazzaniga all arriving at St Mary’s.

Under Premier League rules, the Saints boss must name a 25-man squad from which he can pick for the coming season.

That task is made easier, though, as players classified as being under-21 do not count towards the list.

New keeper Gazzaniga, 20, obviously falls into that category, and so does right-back Clyne, despite already being 21.

A player is deemed to be ‘under-21’ if they were 20-years-old or younger on January 1 in the year in which the relevant season commences.

In other words, anyone who was born on or after January 1, 1991, will be considered to be an ‘under-21’ player for the new campaign. Clyne was born in April 1991.

With that in mind, Saints currently have 24 senior players on their books.

But three of those – Lee Barnard , Ryan Dickson and Jonathan Forte – have not travelled on the pre-season tour, making it unlikely that they will make the final cut.

That would take the number down to 21, leaving room for four more signings before having to even consider leaving out anyone else.

Saints must also make sure that at least eight of the players on their squad list qualify as ‘home-grown’.

The definition of that is a player who, irrespective of nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the FA, or the FA of Wales, for a period of three seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday – whether that period is continuous or not.

Saints have no concerns in that department.

The club will only be allowed to make changes to their squad list during the transfer windows.

If we could get Danns and Lens, I think that would be a pretty decent transfer window for the step up.

Maybe not bad but has a history of relegation as he was part of the birmingham team and the blackburn team who were relegated.

Really good, succinct definition of what the 25 man squad needs to comprise. Credit where credit's due Echo.

I would rule out Danns. Blackburn where asking nearer 7 million. Our chairman will not play over the odds for a average player, who has been relegated two season in a row. If we did go for Danns his fee would be less than half Blackburn are wanting. The latest news was Danns going on loan to Ajax for the season. Saints will bring in aleast two new players by the end of the week. The players will be introduced to the fans on Saturday afternoon.

blackburn where not asking 7million as he has a 6million buyout clause in his contract. ask blackburn fans what they think of him if it was up to them they would rip saints hand off for 2 million.

Can we just clarify then that Clyne is over 21 or under 21, or was he born before or after he should have been born..

He is actually 21 but was under 21 on the cut off date of January. This is similar for U21 international sides.

Not sure about any transfer of a central defender in teams relegated 2-seasons running - but was it the team?
Not sure about Blackburn last season - did they have problems scoring goals?
He might be big and strong, with experience - so with a bit more maturity might be the job.
We will always be done for pace in the middle with Jos - but we have nippy wing backs to cover!
Like the idea of players being introduced before the Ajax game - LIVE ON CHANNEL 5 - next Saturday.
Shame about Buttner deal - but what's all this about Lens & Butland?

I was being sarcastic.

'..and so does right-back Clyne, despite already being 21.

A player is deemed to be ‘under-21’ if they were 20-years-old or younger on January 1 in the year in which the relevant season commences.

- This is enough information.. but he goes on..

...'In other words, anyone who was born on or after January 1, 1991, will be considered to be an ‘under-21’ player for the new campaign. Clyne was born in April 1991...'

The only info missing is his weight at birth, though this would have been useful

According to the Sun Saints had a 5m offer for Lens turned down but are expected to come back with a better offer. apparently Adkins is really keen on this guy. His club paid that for him and believe he has improved and is worth more.
Butland I know nothing of, thought that deal was finished and he was more likely to go to Spurs if anyone.

For me I think the priority now has to be a centre half. Across the squad we have pretty much everything else covered, a tricky/fast winger could be argued for as well.

Looking at the back line, I worry that we might get exposed without a strong/quick experienced premie league centre half.

Fingers crossed.....

Whether or not the transfers go through the promising thing is we r being linked with the right type of player. Would love to see the likes of Buttner, Dann, Butland and Lens at the club but prior to us being linked with them I'd never even heard of Buttner or Lens... I'm sure theres a few more twists n turns but well b ready come the big k.o. COYR!

He is just quoting from SSN this morning who were simply reading what was stated in the Daily Mirror. I think we can do a little bit better than Danns as I do not rate him any better than JF and JH. I would be a little bit disappointed if you did not buy better than we already have.
