Saints' Billy Sharp's backing himself to fire Premier League goals

Daily Echo: Billy Sharp - five pre-season goals Billy Sharp - five pre-season goals

IN-FORM Saints striker Billy Sharp is backing himself to fire goals against the best defenders in world football.

The £1.8m hit man is the form player of Saints’ pre-season, banging in five goals already to make himself comfortably the club’s top summer scorer.

Despite all that though, and only one other goal from a Saints striker in pre-season, Sharp is struggling to get a place to face Manchester City in the club’s Premier League opener a week on Sunday.

However, he believes he can compete against the very best and is determined to do all he can to convince Nigel Adkins to give him his chance.

“If I am playing at the start of the season then there’s no better way to test myself than against the likes of Kompany and Lescott,” he said.

“I think they had the best defence in the league last year, so it would be a test,” he said.

“But I still fancy myself to get one.

“I’m feeling sharp. It’s probably one of the best pre-seasons I’ve had since I’ve been playing.

“Touch wood I’ve had no injury issues, and I’m feeling a lot sharper and a lot fitter, so I’m raring to go.

“The last few seasons I’ve had stop-start pre-seasons with little niggles, so I’m glad that this pre-season I’ve managed to stay 100 per cent fit.”

The big kick-off kicking is looming ever larger on the horizon now and Saints could be forgiven for starting to feel the nerves a little with such a daunting first game, but Sharp, pictured, is hoping his side will have the shock factor early on.

“You’ve got to play them at some stage, so maybe when we’re very eager and hopefully they’re still a little bit tired from celebrating winning the championship, hopefully we can surprise a few of the big teams early on,” he reasoned.

“We’re going to be underdogs in most games, but I’m sure we’ll be okay and we’ll give a good account of ourselves.

“We came in at the end of June and it’s come around really quickly, but I’m happy it’s come around now because I’m ready to start the season.

“I feel really sharp, so if the gaffer says he needs me to play then I’m ready.

“We’ve got a quality squad of players, so I need to be fit and ready so the gaffer can pick me.

“Everyone’s pushing for places and everyone’s trying to get game time, so there’s a week to go and the gaffer’s got a lot of players to pick from.

“I want to start as many games as I can, so I need to try and push on and try my hardest to get in the team.”

Saints now have just one pre-season game remaining before the City trip, against Italian side Udinese at St Mary’s on Saturday.

“It will be a tough game Saturday, they will be really good on the ball and it will be a good test for us,” reckoned Sharp.

“But we should give them a good game as well, because we’re looking sharp.”

Anyway, as interesting as this is, i think the only thing we really want to read about is the possibility of new players coming in. Can't believe how quiet this transfer window has been so far, and not just for Saints, but the whole football league!

Put £1.50 on Sharp to finish each way top scorer, top 4, he's currently 150/1 to win it outright, he reminds me a bit of Lineker hanging round the box ready to pounce.

Wonder if all the Olympics kerfuffle has somehow affected transfer activity? It's certainly muted all the media speculation which often oils the wheels/stirs things up.

I hope Simon Cowell gets a knighthood for the Olympics. What with all the TV stations constantly asking everyone how they feel; how much they wanted the medal; how disappointed they are at not getting one; interviewing all their grannies and numerous other relatives; broadcasting non-stop the words amazing, unbelieveable, fantastic, etc plus showing the world that we are the No1 nation at crying on TV all the time whether it's for winning or losing - this terrific event would never have been so good had Cowell not provided us with the blueprint.

The whole thing has been amazingly and unbelievably fantastic...ooh here I go again....sniff...sni

Does the Olympics finish this Sunday? I think you're right, every sport seems to have taken a back seat since it started! Next week may be a mad scramble for players as teams try and get people in before the big KO, well lets hope so anyway!

I agree, I think the Olympics has stalled things, but could be because the Olympics football has created a huge window for managers to have a good look at new signings and at present everyone has been trying to create deals and that is taking time. But we are still painfully short of centre backs. This is the spine of a team that plans to stay in the premiership and any good team preparation starts at the back. I firmly believe we can stay in the premiership, but 2 more signings are needed to cement our position in this great league. So please NA and NC, provide us with some news that will excite us, and push the boat out, get that marquee signing, and show the world what we are all about! COYR

Yes, there's still a lot of business to be done in the last 3 weeks before the window closes. I'm trusting that the Don has us well placed to pick up the last pieces of the puzzle at the right price. I'm looking for more cover at the back, some experienced heads and one big signing that won't rock the boat, but will give us all confidence and send a message to the rest of the league that we're back to stay. COYR!

Now there is a surprise - the biggest sporting event on the planet that lasts 2 weeks and only happens every 4 years and you wonder why it has so much TV time. As for the success of Team GB that you appear to have little admiration for......I've seen many a grossly overpaid footballer burst into tears when achieving nothing - these athletes have put amazing, unbelievable and fantastic personal effort and sacrifice into what is sometimes only minutes or seconds of performance on one day, its no wonder they are emotional. I just hope and indeed pray, that it's tears of joy for us at the end of the season!

The whole thing has been amazingly and unbelievably fantastic...ooh here I go again....sniff...sni ff...pass the hankie love.[/p]
I just hope and indeed pray, that it's tears of joy for us at the end of the season![/p]
*Whoosh*[/p]
I am not known for employing an ironic tone on these matters and I can assure everyone that no-one holds the noble art of jumping into a sand pit in higher esteem than me. I'm not too good at funerals. My grandma buried three husbands and two of them were only napping.

I guess we need to take inspiration from the happiest days in history - the elimination of smallpox, bubonic plague; death of Attila the Hun, Caligula, Ivan the Terrible, Pol Pot; VE Day, the Relief of Mafeking etc.

Certainly we need a celibratory tone along the lines of Mardi Gras, Octoberfest or the Running of the Bulls. They must have had a huge party the night we switched from BC to AD.

Or we could borrow from Byron...

This is subliminal messaging from the lad! Adkins has had it programmed into him now.

Whilst we're on the subject of BS, wouldn't 'Razor' be a suitable nickname now that Ruddock is a distant memory? Razor Sharp has a ring to it...
I do think that in another life in which football doesn't exist Nigel could have been the leader of a religious cult. It's like he gets into people's heads and inspires this incredible belief in them that makes them play far better than they actually are.

Actually, maybe he really is the second coming of Jesus. What else would a reincarnation of Christ do with his time than lead the saints?

Actually I must stand up for the lardy one on this point. He does seem to fit the bill, a Brizzle City mate of mine who was at the game suggested to me we should buy him.

Blubber boy should be given more time and space on here, paticularly with the impending gaps created by ex skunts.

Just seen the news relating to the skunts on bbc news, they showed a clip of "not arf krap" with a solitary figure on the pitch wasn't sure if it was a groundsman, the investors in the trust, the fanbase or Appy doing his team line up? Perhaps Laffaminute can advise?

Back to the subject of the news article. With your club's well-documented record of player involvement in betting scams, perhaps the headline could have been better worded?

If you really want a good bet, what about Stains relegation (11/8 favourite at most bookmakers), or Adkins to be the next PL manager to get the sack (3/1 favourite at Stan James, though odds of up to 6/1 are available at other bookies so grab them now before they go!)

The news article is about Billy Sharp scoring pre-season goals. I can only presume you are deluded in some way...are you a poopey fan by chance?

I thought we might squeeze that one in, in a nice way of course, otherwise we really are getting thin on the ground.

Mentioning each fan by name should bulk it out by a couple of minutes.
